    Hey guys.

Joined the gym this week. Problem is i haven't a clue what i'm doing. I'm entitled to a fitness review, but i don't need that, i know i'm unfit. And from what i've heard the trainers in the gym don't have a clue what they are doing either.

Aim is to reduce my overall bodyfat. The reason is to increase the speed and accuracy of my fingers for the piano. My fingers (as well as my belly) have gotten bigger in recent years and i want it sorted out in 12 months (hopefully). And just maintain my desired weight (Probably need to loose about 4 or 4 and a half stone in total)

    Some questions:
    • What exercises do i do to reduce my percentage bodyfat? I'm thinking all cardio work but wtf do i know.

    • If i'm going to the gym in the morning straight from bed what is the best thing to eat before i go?

    • If i'm going to the gym in the evening what is the best thing to eat before and after the workout?

    • Wtf is the difference between Hi GI and low GI meals and what is the name of that popular cookbook with the green cover that i should have to help me cook healthy things?

    • How the **** can i stop eating junk. I tried this week and i'm eating fairly healthy but there is always temptations around. If anybody has any relatively
effortless healthy substitutes i'd be very grateful of them

    • I've given up the booze (don't know how long that will last)
I'm committed to this and will do my best. However is there any supplement or anything i can take to speed up the process.

    • To reduce my % bodyfat do i need to use weights and cardio or will just cardio just do. Whatever little i know about cardio (i know how to operate the machines :D) i really don't have a clue at all about weights. I think i look like a tool when i'm lifting them looking at myself in the mirror. Feel like a right knob.

    • If you know any weight exercises that i can do to speed up the process i will try them though. Although a diagram may help so i know what machine i'm supposed to be using!

Thanks so much for your help guys! I forgot boards came in colour

(Please don't just refer me to the sticky. I've read some stuff in there but theres so much it confusing)

First and foremost can you post up your diet. And your actual diet, not your ideal diet. I have this hunch that people are not being truthfull all the time.

Your not going to go very far if thats not right, no matter what work you do in the gym. It's 90% all about your diet if you want to lose weight.

At least talk to the trainers there. Posting on an anonymous internet message board is hardly dependable either. Transforms diet 101 video is straight forward enough without going through all the stickies.

Totally agree. It's become quite cool to say the gym staff don't know what they're talking about and it's certainly true at times. However, it's also true that there are very good gym staff around too. As you said op, it's free so what have you got to lose.

    Typical M,T,W,T:
I usually don't eat breakfast. I used to but then the breakfast cereals dried up and have to date not been replenished cause nobody eats breakfast in the house. I get into college and usually have a cup of tea at the 11am break. Sometimes i'd eat a bowl of cereal there or a bit of fruit (Really ;))

Have a plain chicken fillet baguette for lunch with just butter and the hot chicken most every day. When i don't have a roll i have sausage, beans and chips from the canteen cause its cheap. Or if i'm not that hungry a bowl of soup with a small roll.

If its a long day i'd probably have a bottle of lucozade around 4 to keep me going and maybe a snack (bar of chocolate or crisps)

Have some form of dinner when i get home. Sometimes they are healthy other times they are not, i eat them eitherway. Today was a pork chop, burger, homemade chips and 1 fried egg. Yesterday we had a healthy casserole.

    Typical Friday:
I have two sausages and scrambled egg between two slices of white bread every Friday. Roll for lunch. And without fail a heaped plate of Chinese in the evening. Usually consisting of a house special curry, fried rice, couple of chicken balls and chips.

    Typical weekend:
Usually a full irish on the Saturday morning. Then a healthy dinner that night or Fish and chips from the takeaway. Sunday roast is usually cooked. On occasion we would head to the local for carvery.

    This Week:
Two pieces of brown bread with butter for breakfast. Chicken fillet roll for lunch (cant think of a healthy alternative) fairly healthy dinners (bar today) and two pieces of brown bread with smoked salmon after the gym. Couple of milky bar yoghourts on occasion too as they were in the fridge. Had a sneaky white chocolate kinder bueno at one stage and had one teaspoon of my favourite cheesecake instead of my regular quater.

As i said i'm gonna cut out the fry's and the chinese indefinitely and pints for the moment until we get a half decent start.

I intend to don't worry. Just gotta find a decent one. I had one guy before and he was awful. Thanks for the video i had a look at it, quite helpful

The stickies may seem daunting at first but they are worth the effort.

Start with http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055963342 and see how the diet stuff on there differs from your weekly diet.

I can olny give you my own experience of trying to get fit and drop fat but here goes
What exercises do i do to reduce my percentage bodyfat? I'm thinking all cardio work but wtf do i know.
I do a mix of both combining a lot of spin classes and rowing with a lot of heavy(for me) circuits involving rotating areas hit through out the week..like Monday legs and tuesday chests etc, i have found that intense heavy circuits really worked for me when dropping fat.
If i'm going to the gym in the morning straight from bed what is the best thing to eat before i go?
I generally have a protein shake on rising and nothing else, ill have porridge or an omlette for breakfast afterwards depending on the workout.

If i'm going to the gym in the evening what is the best thing to eat before and after the workout?
I actually try do all workout in the morning, if i do have like a spin class or something in the evening at say 6, i'll have protein and fruit at 4 and nothing else, then ill have dinner at approx 7.30 when i get home

Wtf is the difference between Hi GI and low GI meals and what is the name of that popular cookbook with the green cover that i should have to help me cook healthy things?
    Not a scooby doo
How the **** can i stop eating junk. I tried this week and i'm eating fairly healthy but there is always temptations around. If anybody has any relatively
effortless healthy substitutes i'd be very grateful of them
The only advice i can give here in relation to losing fat and looking good is that if you want it..and i mean really want it...temptation isnt an issue, like all good campaigns "just say NO" I aint saying its easy but its just something that HAS to be done, when you use terms like effortless it generates and image of someone who wants results with no work..dont be that person:p, to quote Tom Venuto "train hard and expect success"

I've given up the booze (don't know how long that will last)
I'm committed to this and will do my best. However is there any supplement or anything i can take to speed up the process.
In my own opinion fat burners do work when you have a spotlessly clean diet...which you dont...yet!!!!!so i'd concentrate your efforts on diet and forget about supp's for now at least. As far as Booze goes...well i think training and booze just dont mix...some lads on here have a few jars and some dont..like i say i think booze when training for fat loss is a big no.
    • To reduce my % bodyfat do i need to use weights and cardio or will just cardio just do. Whatever little i know about cardio (i know how to operate the machines :D) i really don't have a clue at all about weights. Weights and cardio all the way, the ration of which i cant be sure of, i know i do more circuits than cardio and it works for me, there are better lads on here to advise on that, as for looking like a tool with weights, talk to your gym induction person and get a machine based program for now...I started on machines and could notice good changes with the program i was given for both upper and lower body, i was on this for at least 5 months before i moved to free weights. Again you use terms like "speed up the process"....i can tell you in all honesty above "everything else" the one thing you need to drop fat and start looking good is patience, it will come...i'm sure of it and i'm still waiting:D But i think patience and hard work is the key to getting in shape, from getting out of bed for workouts to cycling in the pissing rain to saying no to that pecan pastry with cream.....Patience and hard work!!!!! i hope my own info helps, some beefcake will be along in a minute to rubbish all ive just said:D:p

I have found Glutamine to be helpful with staying on the dry. 1g with each meal or so.

i got some glutamine from a place called bulkpowders - but shop around i dunno - there could be cheaper places.

how that is supposed to help you stay off the booze i really dont know.

i'm far from an expert of any sort - but that diet looks absolutely dreadful. really bad. cereal is crap. chicken baguettes are crap. lucozde and crisps jesus. off the booze is good.

i'm not trying to be nasty or critical of you ok - but you dont sound mad keen or committed to what you are trying to achieve. like you want to lose 4 stone - thats a massive amount of weight and it will be hard i'm sure. off the booze 'for now' and eating kinder bueneos and milky bar yogurts and this is the first few days of your new routine !!!!

edit - you cant think of a healthy alternative for lunch. watch that lad transforms videos there must be an idea in there ??? what about making up a chicken or tuna salad the night before in a lunch box in the fridge ??? throw in a load of celery, peppers, onion etc sweetcorn for a bit of flavour. i eat this a lot. i find the chicken fillets a bit plain so i tend to put a tiny bit of curry powder on them before i put them in the george foreman - just a sprinkling to put some kind of flavour on them now - not dousing them.

porridge is a great breakfast as well i think. again it can be plain - try the stuff with bits and bobs of fruit etc in it - or add in your own nuts and bits and pieces.

How much does it cost do you know? I'm a bit broke so if i could get it online cheaper i'm all for it.

I'm sure the previous user was talking about the Glutamine aiding with fat loss and not aiding with me staying off the drink.

I've been brought up in a family where there were always treats around. And old habbits die hard.As far as one milky bar yoghourt and one Kinder bueno goes. All i can say is that its better than 5 chocolate bars and a the other junk i'd be eating. Baby steps. However your right. i'll be better this weekend and next week. And i didn't have a heaped plate of chinese tonight for the first Friday in months.

I wrote that post about not having any great lunch ideas before the video was posted.

If you have any other suggestions on food it would be great.

Was in a similar position some time ago. Firstly I just wanted to get going regardless so I started on the exercise. Bought a bike from Argos (which I still use today) and peddaled every day for 6 months and lost 2 stone. At the same time I just cut out the rubbish and ate less and better. Then I started to read. Just like learning to play piano, you need to study to be good. Read everything I could on nutrition and exercise web wise. lots of confusion but you start to see whats real and what BS after a while.

Started resistance workouts and really started to to rehsape my body.

wanting to know is the most important step

I cycle everywhere. I cycle about 12km in total a day in and out of college. I'm not that lazy but i just gotta loose the extra weight from too many pints and bad eating and then try keep it down. I'm sorry if i gave the impression that i do absolutely nothing, i'm not that lazy.

I really am not informed at all about nutrition at all. Thats my problem. And im not very good at cooking.

Man keep it really really simple on the nutrition front - I have done a post on my blog on fat loss nutrition so have a look at that and just focus on picking better food quality at first and then work on quanities.

Someone can link that blog post if the mods allow

Good videos posted in this stickied thread. And this is the article on fat loss mentioned above.
