My spinning instructor keeps mentioning how helpful having one of these is but I see some of them are really expensive. Would the cheaper ones in Argos (say €30-ish) do the trick or should I invest big. Can anyone recommend a brand and where to get it.:)

hi you don't need to spend a fortune, something that says 'coded' would be good, the 'watch' part will come with a belt you put on that sends the heart rate to be displayed on the monitor part... a 'coded' model will minimise crosstalk (so you watch should stick to picking up your belt)

you should also get one that you can display heart rate by number and percentage... as the instructor will likely be giving instruction based on % depending on the Profile Energy Zone and section of the ride...

I haven't used the Target ones listed on Argos so can't comment on their quality or functionality, I've used Polar and Suunto kit and both I've found reliable and I use one in every Spinning class and other parts of my workouts

great to hear you are doing Spinning and Heart Rate is being used, where to you take the classes? make sure they go through setting up your heart rate percentages (if they can perform a Lactate Threshold "field test" with you all the better, just make sure not to rely on the default 220-age formula)

Thanks flywheel very helpful, I'll definitely get one now.
I'm a member of one escape gym in Smithfield, spinning on every day, I'm finding it excellent, bit expensive but worth it.
