How to replicate an exercise

Werner Gunthor was a world champion shot putter in the late 80s / early 90s. Attached is part of a series of 4 videos which follow his training throughout an off season. Some of it is pretty impressive, especially his agility for such a big man. It is unfortunately in French, but the visuals speak for themselves in most cases.

I would like to replicate the drill he does at 8:15 in this clip. Does anyone have any ideas how? I guess it would involve something like tying a kettlebell to a rope, but not sure if any gym would allow this...

Sorry, tried to embed the clip, but don't know how. Here is the link

Thanks, how did you do that? I tried pasting the link and then wrapping the youtube tags around it but it didn't work.

If you look at out youtube link in your first post. Notice the sequence after the "=" sign. This is the only portion of the URL that you enclose in the youtube tags

i.e.

Outside Crossfit, I cannot see any commercial gym allowing you set up something like that :)

Hammer Strength Jammer's about the closest movement to it.

Thanks. When I looked up Hammer Strength Jammer I came across this, which I assume should be fine in most gyms, and a one-handed version would be a pretty close approximation of what I was trying to do.

I know another gym where that sort of stuff is pretty run of the mill.

Where is that? I am going to Raw at the moment, but my membership expires some time around next week.

Would you mind PM'ing the user the location of this gym.

Thanks

Cool...maybe B-Builder could have PM'd him that he should try Crossfit rather than posting 'Outside Crossfit, I cannot see any commercial gym allowing you set up something like that.'? Maybe I should just forget about it all together until I can save up my money and buy myself a mod for xmas?

You could never afford us. We're priceless old artefacts.

Bruce7 he means Informed Performance, Google them and you'll find the details. There's a few S&C style gyms popping up around the place that would allow this kind of thing but they are far and few between.

True.

I didn't even mean that. I actually think it's a dumb exercise and would discourage people from doing it.

All I meant was there are plenty of places you could do that if that what got you going...just not the one of 'major' commercial gyms...which considering you can't deadlift in most of those...it isn't much of a surprise.

Thanks for the plug anyway.

Why is it a dumb exercise if you were looking to develop power in this exact movement?

Opening hours & location of both Informed Performance & Crossfit don't work for me, unfortunately.

Don't worry...I'll help you out. What you posted was this:

Thanks for those PMs. It was an interesting discussion, which I think the wider world could benefit from. It went something like this:

WH: You shouldn't try to replicate sport specific movements in the gym as they will interfere with the sport.
B7: Ok, point taken, but where do you draw the line? Certain lifts in the gym are similar to sports movements. e.g. flyes and discus.
WH: WHAT DO YOU KNOW? UNLESS YOU HAVE WORKED WITH WORLD CHAMPS, MY EXPERIENCE TRUMPS YOURS.
B7: Huh? I took your point, and my video was of a World Champ.
WH: JUST COS A WORLD CHAMP DOES SOMETHING DOESN'T MEAN IT'S RIGHT.
B7: Well then, just cos you worked with a World Champ doesn't make you right.
WH: YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE MATE. I'VE WORKED WITH MORE OLYMPIANS THAN THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER PRODUCED
B7: I don't think you understood me
WH: GOOD BYE AND GOOD LUCK.

Which just goes to show that once again...I seem to be wasting my time trying to help anyone here on boards.ie. The reason that I PM'd you rather than posting is because I actually care more about helping people do well than I do about anything else. That I take an active interest in those that are looking to perform at their best...no matter what level that is.

What I get in return is you 'paraphrasing' (poorly) and misrepresenting the advice that I gave you and throwing it back in my face publicly.

I'm glad once again that my offer to help someone here was so well received.

If only it was. I should know better by now I suppose. Don't worry though...just like fighting...I'll keep sticking my head out and taking shots and just hope that I'm still standing at the end.

The actual advice I gave was this:
1. Trying to 'replicate' actual sporting movements in the gym is a massive mistake. In essence the closer you get to actually replicating it the worse it is. The movement patterns and neural pathways applicable to an event such a shot put are very specific. In attempting to replicate these patterns in the gym you are actually 'messing' with the movement patterns you are trying to perfect for competition. Imagine practising shot put using a tennis ball or a 10kg medicine ball...both extremes require completely different firing patterns.

2. You should be looking to develop your general conditioning in the gym. To first and foremost have a balanced physique and then improve your strength and power then look to put this into practice in training and competition in your particular event.

Do you follow?

I won't disclose any more of the conversation. Pointless as always.

Will you didn't need to re-type what someone deleted, it's their perogative to do so - sorry for getting the wrong end of the stick first time but re-posting that was totally unecessary. What's said in pm's should stay in pm's and not brought to the forum. If there are issues with something said in PM it should be reported.

Bruce7 and your multiple accounts, I'll be PMing you.
