    Went to the gym tonight to try it out for the 1st time.. been wanting to get properly fit for a long time. So I'm going to join tomorrow. I'm 22, 5'10 12ish stone.

    I went on the cross trainer and treadmill just to start. I would like to try the bike and rowing machine also.

    I did 2k on the cross trainer and 1.5 treadmill at 9kph I could have done more but didn't want to push it as it was my 1st time. I also did about 10 50metre lengths in the pool over about a half hour.

    I'm just wondering should I be aiming for speed/distance/time when exercising? My goal is to become very fit before I work on anything else.

    Thanks guys.

    Simplest thing is to pick a distance and get faster at it. Eg if you got your 2k on the cross trainer in ten mins, aim to get it in 9.45 mins by next week or whatever you can. The same with swimming, rowing etc.

    Personally I like 500m rows, 3 sets. Row for 500m take a breather, repeat twice, its short (less than ten mins) but hard.

    Google interval training too to get some ideas.

    That's exactly what I did on the treadmill. I'd run for 2.5km at 9 then after a week up to 9.5 then up to 10 all the way up to 15km's which is now my 10min warm up. :)

    Great I'll try get 2k on everything today and time it. Then at the weekend I'll try better that time.

    I'll give the rowing a go as well.

    You won't need to time yourself on the treadmill. If you set the speed to 9km you will always finish at the same time, everyone will finish at the same time. You have to increase the speed to finish quicker, even it you just increase the speed to 9.1km you will finish the 2km faster.

    2km distance
    speed -> Finish Time
    9.0km -> 13m20s
    9.1km -> 13m11s
    9.5km -> 12m27s
    10km -> 12m0s
    etc....

    As for the rowing. I do 2000 meter's, time that and try to beat it just make sure you use the same rower on the same settings every time :-)

    You can pick your own distances for both ;)
