I'm wondering what's the ideal width of a bench. Up to now I was using quite a narrow flat bench and I found I was sliding off the thing when the weight got heavy (for me). So I switched to the other bench press and now I found it's much wider, alot more stable mind, but my ROM is affected a little when flat.

Is there a 'legal' width in comps? Do people prefer a wider or thinner piece of wood behind their shoulder blades?

The thicker and flatter the better. If you're squeezing your shoulder blades together they should become flat and the most stable base for them would be a totally flat bench which is wide enough so you can't rock back and forth.

Probably a matter of getting used to it. Sticking with the wider one so.
