Why does it bother you so much? If people were allowed to believe what they believe in without condemnation, the world would be a far, far better place.

You know what I think? A lot of atheists are really arrogant, whereas I'm really right-on and accepting of everyone's belief systems - just not those of atheists, because they're really arrogant. I mean, you know that guy Richard Dawkins - he's really arrogant. Etc.

There is a certain breed of atheist which feels a pressing need to blame everything on religion, no matter how silly.

You can see it at work on American messageboards when they refer to the 'religious conflict' in Northern Ireland, and try to use it as evidence that most wars are caused by religion.

This breed cannot resist attacking religion and the religious at any opportunity, on even the flimsiest excuse.

Actually the NI conflict was caused by religion, because if they had been the same religion they would have intermarried and the distinctions between them would be as meaningless as Norman and Viking in modern Ireland.

 Jesus wept. If they had been the same religion something else would have been created to justify one crowd taking everything off the other. This is colonialism 101. Christ almighty!

Not really. Just bash people with different faiths and opinions to you and then the next poster will do the same. It will go on and on until a mod locks it and someone starts a simular thread tomorrow and it will continue there.

On the face of it yes it would. But those controlling the belief have strove to deny truths ~ like enforcing a flat earth, the earth being centre of the universe and all that.

It's far to late to start now, and with some violent religions and cults, it certainly is important and should bother people if you're living under the threat of a suicide bomb because you're a different religion.

Religion has been the source and cause of many wars. Countless millions have died because they had the wrong religion. Even today, religion breeds intolerance of gays & anyone who remotely looks or thinks differently to their version of whats normal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,689 ✭✭✭✭OutlawPete

There are energies at play in this universe, that you all just deny at your peril.

Michael Myers* just got his name pulled out of the drum on Winning Streak.

    That's just coincidence I suppose.

Oh ye who have little faith.

    *Fact

That maybe true but the same could be said of people's derision or intolerance of the next person's beliefs as in the OP

Precisely and it is indeed, usually the case.

The perceived arrogance that people now see the majority of atheists as having, has been very well earned.

Intra religious conflict like my god is better than your god nonsense?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Maybe atheists should pretend to believe in god as it seems being atheist, having a genuine belief that god doesn't exist, in itself, is arrogant/trying to be trendy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,689 ✭✭✭✭OutlawPete

No, that's what atheists try and imply alright, that people think the majority of them are arrogant for little or no reason, but it is far from the case - if it was, they would not have the image that they now have acquired, would they.

The rolling of eyes, belittling of those with any kind of deity belief, faith or even just talk of an after life will generally be more than enough to set them off and so the usual little atheist circle jerk will form, backslapping will commence and condescension will follow.

No, being atheist in itself is fine, it is these traits above that is not.

You counter protests that the label is undeserved by saying that they wouldn't have acquired the label if it was undeserved. Impeccable logic I must say.

You heard it here first: Every label that any group has ever been given is accurate, because labels are never given undeservedly. So sayeth OutlawPete.

I suppose I'll contribute what I contribute to this debate every time it pops up:

It's been my experience that when one side of a debate has all of the arguments, all of the evidence, all of the logic and all of the pretty girls* on its side, it doesn't take very long for the other side to start calling them arrogant because in the absence of a good argument, a good old ad homimem attack will always do. Those who have a point to make make it and those who don't label their opponents arrogant.

*Disclaimer: there may not be many pretty girls, although these two are pretty hot:
