The Mayonnaise Appreciation Thread

Considering it's been a long six years since mayonnaise has had its own thread (such an outrage) it's definitely time for another. Enough of all the mustard pish posh (which, it has to be said, isn't particularly bad but totally lacks the oomph of mayonnaise), let us all unite in expounding on our love of mayonnaise, the most delightful of all condiments, one whose availability can make or break the success of a sandwich. Without it you'd just have a very ordinary sandwich. With it you can create the most exquisite sandwich, one that has the potential to send you into a state of ecstasy.

To get the ball rolling I'll ask you two vitally important questions:
    1. Favourite type of mayonnaise? (Hellmann's, Heinz, etc.)
    2. Favourite mayonnaise-related sandwich?

    1. For me Hellmann's provide the best mayonnaise; without them I wouldn't have enjoyed half as many ham sandwiches as I have. They also have a fantastic jingle as you'll rediscover via the video below. God bless you, Mr and Mrs Hellmann.

    2. You can't beat a ham sandwich that's basically COVERED in mayonnaise. Nae. And I emphasize the need for a giant slab of it, don't hold back, it's just heaven. Sometimes a little cheese and lettuce too, just to shake things up a little. I'm not adverse to adding a little bit of tomato to the proceedings either, not too much though cos its sogginess could dissipate the glory of everything else. So just be careful. Get the right mix and you've got something beautiful.

And here's a wonderful advertisement from back in the day, enjoy!

Mayonnaise is the sauce of gods. It makes everything better, sandwiches, chips, wedges, no matter what is tastes good. My favourite type would have to be helmanns.

Sandwich would either be Ham, cheeses, pesto and mayo toastie. Possibly a tuna sandwich with loads of mayo, or a good old ham and mayo. Any boring sambo can be improved with mayo!

Don't but Aldi mayonnaise. Just a tip.

    Wise words!

Also, I think it's important to remind people that salad cream DOES NOT count as mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise has one purpose in life apart from making salads edible.

    Its nice with chips.

But it has to be straight from the fridge and it has to be Hellmann's. And none of that low fat lark either.

Mayonnaise is a miracle sauce, I can't believe it took me so long to realise it but it just makes everything better. Mayonnaise + diced chicken fillet + whatever sauce/seasoning you're having yourself (I like cajun or sweet chilli) in a bread roll, OMG. I've also recently started dipping chips into it, lovely. As for brand, I haven't really shopped around; Hellmans is always good, but sometimes I buy the Tesco stuff to save money and it does the job for me.

I'm thinking of mixing some cajun into some mayonnaise to create a nice dipping sauce for chips etc. Any think it's a good/horrible idea?

Mayo by itself on stuff, boo.

Ass something else to mayo = nom.

    garlic mayo
    Sweet chilli mayo
    tika mayo

    etc.

I tried the cajun and mayo, it's damn good.

Also Mayonnaise mixed 50/50 (or to your taste most people would use a lot more Mayonnaise) with any of the really hot Patak's Pickles, make a great dip, you need to chop up the Hot Mango Pickle a bit to get the consistancy right.

Any room for the appreciation of that Mayonnaise spin off Tartare Sauce? Love the jars of it from Lidl with chips.

I've had two proper meals in the past two days and mayonnaise were prominent and delightful features of both.
Monday: wedges + mayonnaise to dip them into (righteous)
Tuesday: mashed potato salad + mayonnaise (ruddy fantastic)

    God bless it.

Yup. I'm from Holland, where people eat chips with mayonaise, and people who don't are frowned upon, and eventually shot. I think. Chips and mayo. Yes.

Aww there's a chipper around here, when ya ask for chips and mayonaise they give ya a bag of chips and one of those polystyrene cups they use for curry?, full of mayo. Fair dues to 'em.

Mayonnaisse isn't good unless it's covered with mustard.

What do the connoisseurs of mustard and/or mayo think of the sauce formally known as dijonaise (now hellmans with a pinch of mustard)?

Anyone know any viable alternatives to Hellmans? I thought I saw some mayo comparison in the Indo a few months ago on the food page, I think. Hellmans came about half-way down the list for flavour iirc.
Unless I was dreaming. I've always gone for Hellmans.

When i get a cheesburger from BK or FIVE GUYS,etc I want it to be have LOADS OF MAYO :) (Not good otherwise)

The best mayo is made with the best mustard, ergo Maille's quite good. But any (well, almost any) home-made mayo will give you orgasms.

    I prefer jam..

I think you have that backwards. Surely you mean that orgasms will give you home-made mayo?
