Healthy & handy lunch for work??

I am starting a new job soon - some of my shifts will be in the evening and I will be bringing in dinner which I am ok about because my partner has been doing this a while - so I know what is healthy, easy and will re-heat well. My problem is that some of my shifts will be 9 to 5 so I will have to bring a lunch - and it has been so long since I have had to bring lunch that I have no idea where to start!!

I only eat about 4/5 slices of wholegrain bread a week - and I like to keep one of those for a weekend breakfast treat - so I don't want to slip into the habit of bringing sandwiches every day. Rice cakes are great but have a high GI so I want to avoid those also.

I was thinking of maybe a breadless sandwich one or two days (with fruit etc) and I would prob be ok with a wholemeal wrap or a sandwich one day.

I am so psyched about the new job - but really worried that my eating habits will slip. Has anyone any ideas on low carb, easy lunch ideas?

PS: Sorry if this has been either asked before or should be in a different thread - or both!!

snap..i just came on here about to ask the very same question :D Starting a new job next week and i have no idea what to do for lunch. They have a canteen, but mainly carby stuff like sandwiches, potatoes, chips etc..

Anyway here is one recipe i plan on using that you might like too:

you can leave out the chickpeas for lower carb. I find it very filling - ive often had it for dinner by itself, no bread or any extras needed.

How about a large salad? Keep the extra virgin olive oil/dressing or whatever in a separate plastic bottle until you eat it, so that the salad doesn't go all soggy.

Fajitas/tacos? Just microwave the chicken/beef to reheat it as well as the fajitas. Fill with salsa/guacamole etc as well as salad or cheese or whatever.

How about some homemade soup packed full of meat and veg?

Also a lunch doesn't specifically have to be a sandwich/salad/soup, why not have a traditional "dinner" as your lunch? Maybe a smaller portion if you're used to eating it that way. Then you can have something you can make yourself when you get home, and call it "supper/tea" instead of "dinner". ;)

Thanks!! will definitely think about bringing a smaller portion of a dinner in - and will try the chilli!! Today I had a 'breadless sandwich' - a lettuce wrap basically. It was yummy and I will definitely have one again - had some fruit with it so was filling enough.

I'm the same, don't do grains at all so no sarnies for me. Leftovers from dinner are my usual now, get a soup thermos and you can bring anything from soups and stews to curries with you. Otherwise if I can't be bothered (I now work in a huge covered food market) I get a gluten-free home-made sauasage on a stick (O flynns have a grill in there) and a few different salads from another stall, or soup and salad, or just moar cheese... so much cheese.. very simple lunch with just a few handfuls of almonds and an apple or two.

I'm in college from 8am-10pm at the mo and struggling to think of stuff to bring in. I can't put it in the fridge or heat it up and as I'm trying to lose weight the cold pasta / sandwiches aren't great. Not to mention I have very little time to prepare them cos I'm exhausted when I get home and only up for about an hour or two til I'm in bed again! Any nice healthy cold lunch ideas?

Tins of tuna with mayo and salad, tins or jars of chickpeas with salad. Is there no microwave in college? If you are in college that long you will need to eat nutritiously...

Natural yogurt with (frozen) berries. and you only need a spoon. 500ml tub and you're full.

Or a variation on a theme.

Tomatoe and cucumber salad with seeds, top with a yogurt and balsmatic vinger dressing. If you prep the veg in the morning it holds up better. yum, but maybe a little more work than you where hopping for.
