Just etuned my tv to Spur Hill (outside Cork): TV3 is still not on digital - just the RTE stations.

I thought TV3 were coming on board today (29/10/10)?

Stand back, politicians are getting involved..

May i present Fine Gael’s Waterford bye-election candidate Senator Paudie Coffey..
“Concerns remain, however, about the continued sale of UK produced television sets here, as the system used in British models is, what is technically referred to as, an mpeg2 system. The requirement for compatibility with RTÉ’s digital service, however, is mpeg4 making UK produced televisions unable to pick-up the new service.

“The Minister must issue a regulation to ensure that all suppliers of television sets in the State are providing compatible sets, at least by the end of 2012 when the national stations will cease to be available via the analogue signal.

“There are also further considerations regarding the fact that RTÉ is still in a contract with a foreign digital service provider. With the launch of this new service it would appear foolish to continue paying a foreign digital provider for a service that the national broadcaster itself is now providing. I am calling on RTÉ to examine if it is possible to release itself from the current contract with the foreign digital television service provider.

Sam Russell posted the above email in another thread, it indicates 24 sites are available from today, didn't make the 28 sites that Conor Hayes said would be available by the end of Oct.

This is the list from another thread from last August, wonder which of the sites listed in RED are now active to make 24 active sites?

I am told that Gorey and Forth Mountain are infact on. Heres my list for 2010.

Only in Ireland could the transmission network operator produce a booklet on receiving DTT which goes in to fairly great detail on aerials, polarisation, etc and NOT provide a coverage map.

Not surprising I'm sure RTE don't have a proper RF engineer with a copy of MapInfo or similar but rather paid a company a bucket load for the RF design and now that company wants to charge for 10-20 hours work to make them for them.

    (-- bitter unemployed RF planner --) :-)

RTE DTT got a quick mention on the Six One News. They mentioned TV3 as part of the line up of channels even though it's not on it yet.

Could they use 'The Late Late (lamented) Show' to launch the whole lot and ceremoniously bank the cheque from TV3?

For the chaps trying to get Saorview via a satellite dish. You need an Aerial and a new receiver for Saorview, satellite has nothing to do with it at all.

They are only on TV aerial, terrestrial, Not on Dish till April 2011 maybe, and not on that receiver or that dish then. See http://www.techtir.ie/saortv

Soarview = Digital TV via Aerial from 29th October 2010

Soarsat = Digital TV via dish (but not one pointing only at BBC/Sky), Not till next Spring 2011, and needs special Ka LNBF. HD Satellite box only.

This is a problem with your TV not RTE's problem.

Manufacturers only have MHEG5 for the fancy text turned on in UK mode because they have used MHEG5 for years and its part of their country profile.

Despite OUR spec being out in the wild since Feb 2008 lazy manufacturers havent added MHEG5 to the country profile for Ireland. Hence whilst you are using UK settings to counteract this it positions anything that doesnt recognise as a UK broadcast in the 800s (its called Logical Channel Numbering or LCN and exists to sort such problems in border areas). You can short circuit this by adding the stations to your favourites if you cannot edit the LCN Number.
Any samsung,or Sony I've seen allow you to order the channels any way you like in uk mode.
So in the case of those two brands it's possible to have digital rte text and reposition RTE into the number one position manually.

Yup, and it's affecting a few people high up here (like Mountcharles/Dunkineely) who get their BBC1 on C22 from Brougher Mtn!

Still no TV3 from Clermont Carn. To be honest, it wouldn't be a truly Irish launch if it worked properly.

Why are we expecting TV3 at this stage?

Just because someone wrote a website doesn't make it so.
That someone may have been asked to do the site and just filled in tv3 ...just like that.
Same in the rte reporting of this...the journo's would expect tv3 to be on it ...that doesn't mean they are aware that RTENL are tv3 refuseniks for some reason..purportedly/speculatively here because they haven't paid.

Because the official website mentions it on their first page, I think it's fair assumption to expect TV3.

Of course, as we all know now, TV3 isn't, as of yet, available.

I'd assume the site is reviewed by people in the know in RTE / RTENL before being published live.

Regarding TV3 my guess is it should have been there today based on the following
    - all the information incl. press releases, saorview website and Six One News report says it should be there
    - the epg carried TV3 programme listings earlier today
    - a post hereabouts indicated that the RTÉNL 1 channel name changed to TV3 earlier today and later back to RTÉNL 1

Probably only a technical glitch considering the channel hasn't been carried since early March.

As all the official info indicates TV3 will be there sooner rather than later and not 2011 or 2012 as was suspected for the last few months, the issue of dual DTT and analogue costs must be sorted.

Maybe no one told the TV3 technical staff

I spoke with a Technical staff member by phone in TV3 this afternoon
No news I am afraid for the next couple of weeks and months
So Watty was right most likely 2011-12 for tv3 on the irish dtt
I explained I and many neighbours have combo satellite/ terrestrial receivers and are enjoying the digital version of rte and TG4
I also explained we would like to watch tv3 digital for the x factor instead of itv1hd, after a brief silence, he recommeded the analog version of tv3
I also explained numerous e-mails I sent in the past on this topic, his answer is to check the tv3 website for updates
I don't really watch tv3 myself, except for football, the odd movie and when it shown 'malcolm in the middle'

TV3's really have no digital vision, only a analog one

    Thank you for your time.

Once TV 3 launches, can we start speculating and arguing over when 3e will launch? :D

We don't have to. The Minister's satement says the channels can only be added after the BAI give their approval.
