I have decided not to spay my bitch. Depending on how bad the heat experience is we may not do it until she is 2, if ever.

However, if I am walking her when she is in heat, I have no problem defending her against robust males. Even if this incudes a few well placed kicks. I choose not to spay, they choose not to neuter. Everyone is accepting the responsibility.

Please dont do this, its irresponsible and risky to both you, your dog and other dogs. You have obviously never had a dog trying to mate with a bitch in heat.Nothing and i mean nothing will get them off and if they manage to tie then you could actually damage both your own bitch and the male trying to separate them, so please think carefully before bringing your bitch out when shes in heat.

If you arent neutering her, then the responsible thing to do is keep her well away from other dogs during this time and this means no public walks anywhere near other dogs.

I dont think you realise how much 2 dogs will want to mate when a female is in heat, trust me, i know, i own a stud dog.

Here is the plan. I'll keep her on leash, drive her to the park, walk her after dark(i.e. off peak times) and use bitch spray.
It trying to balance protecting her and excercising her(collies need this as much as affection and food.)
I have no qualms about protecting my dog physically, as long as I don't fatally harm the other dog. Although I am not sure how far I would go TBH.
A few weeks ago I kicked a dog into the river when it attacked mine. I would do it again(it was fine BTW... it jumped out and ran away with the other dog who was about to join in)
I do know how horny male(and female) dogs can be. I also know that when my bitch starts standing for the males then I won't walk her.

I think that the male dog owners need to take responsibility for not neutering their dogs and then walking them off leash.

Sorry but bitch spray doesnt work in the slightest.

Look, as a bitch owner myself, i certainly wouldnt be taking the chances walking mine in public when shes in season.
You dont want to neuter her, so if you are not going to nueter her then you need to take all other precautions then and that means not walking her in public when shes in season, end of.

Yes i understand about male owners, but if theres a loose male and the owner is nowhere to be found then good luck to you trying to fight him off if hes a big strong dog. They can and do turn aggressive so he could easily turn on you if he wants to get at your bitch.
That is not something i would risk, just to walk her when shes in season.

Not walking her not an option. She is a nine month old collie from a working dog background.
There are very few ownerless dog I have encountered where I live. Esp in the park as it is enclosed. And the ones that are alone, tend to be well socialised and small.
As I said when she is standing for a male I won't bring her, so I will have the help of her telling the dog to back off.
And the help of my six foot partner. And his boots too.

jinxi it sounds to me like yuo are looking for trouble!

may I ask why you don't intend to get her spayed?
do you intend to breed her?
not trying to be smart at all but are you aware of the vast health benefits to getting her fixed?

I will be getting my 9month old collie girl spayed in the next month or two because I honestly believe it will give her a longer and fuller life and neither she nor I will have to deal with the stress of heats...they sound like insanely hard work!

On the other hand, I have a collie pup (boy) that I don't intend to neuter unless there is a medical need for it. By taking this decision, I have hugely increased my level of responsibilty. I will need to be extra cautious when out on walks and he will never be out of my sight.

however if a female in heat is out in public, it can cause serious problems for other dogs and owners. she should be kept indoors until the heat is finished or if you insist on walking her outside (I know only too well how active collies are! but I still wouldn't risk it TBH) bring her somewhere out the country that is isolated. you can't expect to walk her in a public park in heat and not get unwanted attention:confused:
