What is the story with it? Why do people buy it? Its horrible in your cereal and pretty much everything and dont even think about putting it in your tea because it tastes like shi_te!!

This is the one you can get in Lidl (also known as UHT milk which is also served on planes)

Stockpiling for the zombie apocalypse. That's the only sane reason to buy feicin' UHT.

My mate drinks them like shots! The little ones you get in hotels, we end up robbing them off the trolleys in the corridors so she can have her fix! Bleugh

    Fresh milk is definately nicer.
But i always have one or 2 liter of the UHT at home in case i run out of fresh milk.
UHT milk is still better than no milk.

    All milk is shite. Yuk!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭_Whimsical_

You can leave it out of the fridge and it doesn't go off. It can be handy in the summer or if you're having building work done & have no electricity. I never knew you could buy it until this summer when we had our electricity fixed and spent several days without it and uht milk proved pretty invaluable for a few weeks.

The skim uht milk is much nicer than the full fat uht.

    the continentals love the stuff.
Not necessarily the taste, but the practicality of it.
You can buy it by the dozen in a wee pallet like in your picture and theres no need to store whatevers not opened in the fridge.
It does go off quick enough when opened though.

Tastewise, 90% of it is horrible in tea or cereal. 10% of the brands are nearly drinkable, if chilled to the last. (I've tried manys a brand by this stage!!)
But in Coffee its grand, no matter how sh1te it tastes on its own.

For continental folk the unpleasant taste is not a problem, they eat joghurt with their cereal and NO milk in their tea. So its really only for coffee normally.

    So......
    the story is .....
Its not really meant for Irish people!!

    ASIDE:
in continental hotels its nearly always UHT milk they have out at the breakfasts (if its not marked as fresh, presume the worst!!!).
So the only way to eat a cereal is to go for coco pops that mask the sh1te milk taste!!

I was on the train to the great ****hole of Dublin one day and there was a mother and a youngfella sitting beside me

the youngfella wanted milk, but they didn't have any. what did she do? got about 10 or 11 little UHT containers and emptied them into a plastic cup. the fella drank it, i can only imagine how rotten it must have tasted. he must have been fairly thirsty.

I usually just buy it in cartons from the shop, for the convenience.

I'm stockpiling cows instead, it's a bit more work but I'm not drinking that UHT crap, apocalypse or no apocalypse.

+1 also german "tea" tastes like crap. The culture shock of my life asking for tea in Dieburg and being presented with a box of different varieties. The culture shock of her life when I asked for milk with it hahaha

I'm living in Spain at the moment and all they bloody drink is UHT milk!

And even when you can find fresh milk in the shops, it still tastes like UHT and it lasts longer than milk at home so there must be SOME sort of treatment being done to it!

It's bloody nasty is that UHT sh*te!

italy is the same. spent half an hour looking around the supermarket for proper milk but there was none.

No matter where ya go on the continent, you nearly always seem to come across Lakeland Daries UHT milk which is processed in Cavan.

Before i lived here i lived in Valencia for a while back and there was one place where you could get proper fresh milk. But they only got in like 8 cartons of full and 8 cartons of skimmed a day. The shop would open at 9am and the milk would be gone by 10!

I love UHT milk. I developed a taste for it going to Dublin on the train when I was but a wee thing. When I camped in Prague a few years back we bought it because it was about 30C and we didn't have a fridge, so it was good for tea.

I drink the wee shots of it too.

Wash that mouth out with milk young lady!

Infinitely more fun to pierce the foil top with a syringe full of laxative and pump it in.

In other news. I can drink buttermilk by the litre. Nyom.

I don't know wtf they put in the milk over here but it seems to keep just fine for about 3 weeks after opening once it stays in the fridge. Tastes fine with cereal too.

    Beautiful, as is raw butter.

I took those little cartons of UHT milk from a hotel when I was small and put them in a drawer at home. A few years later I found them again and it had turned into cheese. 'Twas pretty tasty. :)

I love my milk! I love to drink any kind of milk well most types except skimmed watery cack and goats milk ugh! I don't mind the long life stuff! It is handy to have as back up milk in case you run out of milk from your fridge!

Break seal in case of emergency.

I think it tastes nicer than UHT -which always has a burnt plastic thing going on for me. You can also fashion the empty can in a mean shiv, you know, for the zombies.

Evaporated milk is lovely and creamy. Great for tae and coffee.

Just freeze a carton of milk in future.

Thaw it out slowly in the fridge and it does be grand. TBH if your fridge is low enough, some milk will keep for over a week more than it's date.

    Would you drink breastmilk?

I had a boss once who had a dream of establishing a lady farm. He would milk the ladies every morning and evening, and make speciality ladybutter and ladycheese.

Needless to say I haven't met up with him since I went on maternity leave.

    @Bonito

I might lob a carton in the freezer so. My never-be-without-milk-for-tea system could use some redundancy.

Open it 1st and pour a drop out, it expands while freezing.
