Hi all. I have posted here a good bit and love my precious C&R forum, and for the last 6 months or so I have been following a paleo/primal diet, where I upped my intake of green veg by about a million and cut out bread/rice/noodles/cereals etc. Basically everything I ate was homemade and nothing was processed. It was great because I love cooking and the flavours were delicious, and I found it really easy and natural to me.

As you can imagine I lost about 10 pounds, I wasn't huge to begin with but it slimmed me down which was nice, not the reason I did it though.

However a couple of weeks ago I went on hols and the hotels breakfasts were horrific. I tried to stay on meats/cheeses etc but after a couple of days I had the mentality of 'f*ck it i'm on hols' and I started to eat glorious warm croissants. Then of course I fired myself completely off the wagon and ate whatever I liked, whenever.

Grand, but then I get home. And I'm finding it really difficult to get back into my healthy way of eating. I'm fine for a few days and then I'll go out to dinner and have some bread, or I'll scoff a big bag of crisps. I just don't know how to get back to my mindset of before.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get back on track? I am literally so far away from the wagon I can't even see it anymore. :o

I've been there and bought the t-shirt so many times its not even funny!

I really started on this road (and it's a long long road btw) to eating better in April 09 and I have jumped off the wagon many times while on hols (including honeymoon:D). I am finding that the more I learn about what all those processed foods do to me, the less inclined I feel to eating them. So ultimately I think that in the long term you need to educate yourself to these things. I know that it is gradually working for me and the holiday 'binges' are getting less extreme. BTW I think that this is a repercussion of having such a fecked up relationship with food for so long. I also think that it takes a while to get your head around eating well again and that there is a period of adjustment required there.

Some things I do to get back on track - any time that I feel the need for something sweet I'll eat 1 or 2 apples or pears. It seems to do the trick by giving me the taste of something sweet and seems to satisfy my craving. It's not something that I would do when I am truly dialling it in but it is better than eating, for example, a bag of craptastic pick n mix!

Whenever I have a want about me, say after dinner or something, I will have a cup of green tea. It seems to take the want away, don't know why that is but it seems to work.

Hope what I've said makes sense to you. Would also love to hear what other people do to get back on track:)

I get back on track by eating as much healthy food as I can for the first few days. A mistake I used to make was jumping straight back in to my usual two meals a day.

I pack the presses with all sorts of goodies, nuts, fruit, cooked chicken legs, deviled eggs etc. so that there's always something good near me to eat when the munchies strick. I graze away all day and eat as much as I want, even if it's not 'real' hunger, just 'snacky' hunger or 'boredom' hunger. After 2-3 days my appetite normalises, cravings are gone and I'm back eating healthy.

Sorry Kimia but someone has to say it. How can you post the perfectly sensible advice below just a day ago when it turns out you are scoffing big bags of crisps. It's OK to eat bread and rice, billions of people do it every day. If you want to cut down on anything maybe the use of the word Millions.

Sorry Fonecrusher, but someone has to say it. I'm pretty horrified by your diet. Surely you cannot possibly believe that 2 weeks worth of weightwatcher ready meals is healthy? And beyond that, why do you just eat ready meals? Is it because you can't cook? If not, we can help with that!

The most important thing when starting to eat healthy to lose weight or just to be healthier, is to figure out how to cook a couple of proper healthy meals for yourself. It's not a big deal, it won't take forever, but it'd a damn sight better than fecking a WW meal into a microwave and making your body rely on processed crap.

And to answer your original question, no, in moderation, breadcrumbed chicken fillers are not crap, but for taste, would you not just make your own? It would taste a million times better and be a million times better for you too.

    Tbh your post is nonsensical.

Why exactly does somebody have to say the above?
The OP started a thread asking for advice, and you seem to be having a pop at her for giving, as you said yourself, good advice.
How does the OP, by eating a bag of crisps, dilute the quality of her advice whatsoever FFS?

In addition the OP never said there was anything wrong with eating bread, rice or cereals.
The primal/paleo diet the OP is following promotes a low carb intake, and as such this fact is obviously the crux of her issue.

I think this is a ridiculous and condescending post. I was out drinking the weekend, i suppose that excludes me from telling a potential poster to lay off the booze if the case arose?

Anyway - id agree with El D- let yourself graze on healthy foods for a few days until you feel good again with nourishing foods and then slowly slip back to comfortable dietary habits.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

@dxhound2005 - I'm really disappointed that you would post such a negative and tbh nasty post, just to get a dig in. I'm not perfect, never said I was.

@Red Cortina - Yes, I think it's something to do with the fact that I eat for comfort, when I'm bored etc. I was doing so well but when I fell off the wagon on holidays I just kept coming up with excuses to prolong eating my bold foods.

@the keen edge - thanks for your support.

@El_Dangeroso - Good idea. I may just stock up on the good stuff and try your method, it sounds like a plan! Better than crisps anyway.

@ULstudent - Thanks for your support too. I will start to graze - better load up on the shopping!

If anyone has any other tips they would be appreciated too!

Wtf is your problem? Everytime I see you post here you seem to offend people. Your style of posting suggests you have more issues then a magazine.

I went through the exact same thing you did recently! Was doing great with the weight loss and had lost over 65 lbs .. went on holidays and then broke up with ex boyfriend later and just stopped all my hard work. I ended up gaining 15 lbs in the months following and told myself that I couldn't get to where I was again.

So I spent awhile thinking of why I wanted to lose weight and eat healthier etc and everytime I thought of something, I wrote it down. I now have a list of over 100 reasons! lol :D So I sat down and had a hard look at everything I wrote down and I keep reading it over and over again until everything sunk in. I had a good few cries reading everything but it did the trick anyway and I've been back on track for 3 weeks now and I've no intentions of straying ever again .. and if I do, I'll just read my massive novel of reasons!

I'm sure this doesnt work for everyone but just thought I'd share something with you that might help you out! :D:D

Thanks Blue, that's a really sweet story! I'm doing ok today, nearly went mad a few times but I don't have anything unhealthy in the house so I'm doing ok. I was starving when I got home but I just boiled an egg and mashed it up with some butter and salt (yum) and that was my snack before dinner.

I'm also taking El D's advice and not being too strict with myself, as long as it's all good stuff. So i had a few nuts there earlier and some dark chocolate but not so much.

Carbs are just ridiculously addictive - why are they so hard to give up? Its a serious craving with me, and logically I know it'll be gone after a few days if I limit the amount of sugar I eat but it's getting there that's hard.

Sounds to me you're still exercising too much restraint. Eat more! Seriously, it will last but a few days, that includes lots of fruit if that's what you're craving, you need to nourish yourself after eating industrial crap.

Get a big assed bag of pistachios in lidl, plums are super-delicious at the moment, have a bigger bowl of starchy veg with butter for dinner. Pour coconut milk over fruit salad. You need to get rid of any feeling of deprivation. It's so much easier to wrangle back portion control when you've had a couple of days being (over)nourished with nutrient-dense food!

Thanks a mill EL D. Brilliant advice. That's a really good way of looking at it - nourishing myself after eating loads of processed food. I was being too restrictive!

Went a bit crazy on carbs and sugar last night after almost 5 weeks without and now have serious sugar cravings!!So going to try this over the weekend and hopefully will be back to normal by monday or tuesday!

Off to get some Peanut Butter, almonds and cheese this evening after work to help me through the weekend without feeling like im going to inhale a slice pan of bread followed by a whole tin of Roses!!

Will report back on monday to see how it went!
