    oh....
    helpful reply....

seriously...sounds like you are thinking too much, brain full of thoughts and too busy to sleep... try relaxing music..or read a book in bed.

Drink lots of alcohol, take some sleeping pills, smoke a few joints, then you'll doze off no bother. *

    * = may have long term health implications

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

Try keeping away from caffeine for a few hours before bed.
If you have some rambling inner dialogue keeping you awake or you're stressed out about something, try listening to podcasts or standup comedy albums while you drift off... it'll give your mind something else to focus on. Added bonus points for being entertained/educated while you're unable to sleep... doing something > doing nothing.
The worst thing to do is get pissed off about not being able to sleep, while you're trying to get to sleep.

The Bleeding Horse might be in Dublin, but it's a major culchie pub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭littlefriend

Lay off the caffeine from about 3pm - tea has lots of caffeine btw
Don't bring your laptop to bed
    Don't watch tv in bed
Go to bed and get up at around the same time every day
Exercise daily [not close to when you are going to bed]
Even if you are exhausted during the day, don't have a nap

If you still have trouble get some 'Valerian' in the chemist or health food shop

    Look up sleep hygiene

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭anniehoo

Valerian from Boots is your only man. Savage herbal (and legal) stuff. Bit late now like, but if you get the "nightime" stuff tomorrow itll be deadly Zzzzzs tomorrow night ;)

I know the pub, I'm only a blow-in culchie
I was only winding you up.. :p

If you don't get aedaquate sleep you'll end up being run down...

    Do you smoke?
Do you drink a lot of coffee/coke?

If so try cutting back nearer to bedtime.
Try and go for a walk every day even just a short one..
    Don't eat too late.

If you are stressed about something....try resolve it...

Sounds like you have tried a lot already..

I always read in bed, couldn't sleep without reading first.

    :)

Would this work as well if I slice a block of cheese?

I do not have sellotape .. just generic euro shop sticky tape?

Could I use tin foil instead?

Just make sure you slice thinly. If the slices are too thick, it won't work properly.

    And sticky tape is fine.

    - christmas is coming, thats more money
    - that other thing your worried about.
    - and that

I used to suffer from this pretty badly, it's horrible, being tired during the day all the time, feeling like you look tired and so on.

So I eventually got collective advice from lots of people, and put together what works for me. Here's what I would do.

When I get to bed, I get comfortable, normally sleep on my side.

I breath in and out slowly, deeply enough, not overdoing it.

I concentrate on the air filling my lungs, and exiting them. If my mind wanders to something too thought provoking I go back to concentrating on the air.

I also like to think of a calming colour associated with something I like and find calm in life. For me, that's a calm sea on a nice day (in Donegal for me), the colours that come to mind that I concentrate on are green/blue.

When I combine all of this together, concentrating on the air, the colours green and blue I normally drift off within half an hour.

Do not let yourself think about what time it is.

Do not let yourself think about what time you have to be up by.

Do not let yourself think about how many hours of sleep you need and how you need to go to sleep right now in order to get the right amount.
Go back to the air and colour techniques I describe above everytime.

I really hope this helps you and anyone else that suffers.

    Good luck, pleasant dreams.
