Did you post this in the nutririon and diet forum as you think your lack of sleep is diet related??:confused:

Anyway - it could very well be mental. The more you think about not sleeping, the more active your mind stays and the harder it will be to nod off.

A light carb snack such as hot milk and a banana a half hour before bed might help as it will increase the level of the hormone serotonin - i.e the hormone that relaxes you. If there's lots of things playing on your mind write them all down before bed and write a 'to do' list of the important things that need doing in the next few days. It might help you switch off. How long has this been going on? Been to a GP?

Do you exercise? It can help with sleep.

I had the same problem. Shagged tired all day but come bed-time I was wide awake.

I think I was especially sensitive to caffeine so I cut it all out (withdrawal symptoms from coffee take a week to go away, and I only had a 1 cup a day habit). I made sure the room I slept in was pitch dark. Also cut out any kind of computer or television at least two hours before bed, the blue light emitted by these devices stimulate your brain to think it's daylight and not time to sleep.

You may also want to consider meditation to quieten the racing thoughts that always seem to appear right when you want to fall asleep.

Hard manual work. I know plenty of people who swear they can't sleep, but after a day building fences they sleep like lambs.

Go skiing. The altitude, combined with the exercise, is a recipe for a good night's sleep.

Also, make sure your room is totally dark. That means blackout curtains and no electronic clocks. If you have one, move it onto the landing.
