I'm all for this. The first one didn't make much of an impression (I haven't seen it- any good?) so it seems like a risk worth taking hiring Aronofsky and seeing where he goes with it.

I'm looking forward to Black Swan- maybe he's going to continue in this vein with Wolverine. Superhero psychodrama!

It's good to see auteurs being given big budget movies- though it could always turn out more like Ang Lee's Hulk rather than Christopher Nolan's Batman. Either way, it'll be interesting.

The first film was an absolute disaster. And that's coming from someone who really likes the character and wanted a good film. When I heard Aronofsky is doing Wolverine 2, I was like 'WHAT?!' But it actually makes a lot of sense. Wolverine's a character who could fit very well into the pantheon of lost characters the Aronofsky has made films about. Aronofsky directed Jackman in his best role to date.

I'm hoping for something different in terms of superhero movies. Looking forward to seeing what Aronofsky comes up with.

This may well be the best news I've ever heard, lets hope for a proper portrayal of Wolverine, not that pansy who was in the last 4 films(I liked the Singer ones but Wolverine was still too damn nice!!).

You say that like Ang Lees Hulk was terrible (which it wasn't) and Nolans Batman was brilliant (which it wasn't)

I actually liked Ang Lee's Hulk- except for the parts with the actual Hulk! I think Christopher Nolan's Batman films are much more successful as superhero movies. I think he managed to mesh his style with the genre better than Ang Lee did. I don't want Aronofsky's Wolverine to be like Nolan's Batman, I just hope he finds a way to make his style work with the genre.

Aronofsky has revealed the official title will be The Wolverine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,731 ✭✭✭FrostyJack

Ang Lee's Hulk was infinitly better than the remake which was a huge let down and a waste of Norton. X-Men 1 and 2 = brilliant, X-Men 3 = crap, Wolverine = absolute dog dirt. I hold no faith in this new one as it will probably be PG'd down for kids again and the killing machine with claws will only use them on people that can't die, like in the previous 2. Then again I would love to be proved wrong.

Excellent, love his stuff. I see he also signed up to Max Barrys Machine Man... favourite author and favourite director, can't wait

I'm not a massive fan of "Superhero" adaptations in general, its almost impossible for a writer/director to fit in the character analysis that goes into most of the source material within a couple of hours - and still make it accesible for a mainstream audience. Personally i dont even feel that Nolan's Batman has managed this, although he has definetly come closest.

Wolverine was a movie that really dissapointed me though, the public already knew him through the X-Men franchise, and he is absolutely ripe for a really gritty characterisation through film.
Instead we were left with a limp action movie that didnt really give us a look at what the character is really about.

I had personally written off any further Wolverine films....but on seeing this thread my interest has shot up seriously!

if it was made in a dark tone for an older audience then it could be good. making these kind of movies as PG safe for kids rubbish is totally wrong

    http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/11/23/darren-aronofsky-wolverine-3/
If you're wondering why "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky was hired to tackle "The Wolverine" for 20th Century Fox, wonder no more.
Aronofsky himself has broken his silence on the "Wolverine" front in an extensive interview with Movie City News. According to the filmmaker, his reasons for choosing the "Wolverine" non-sequel as his next project are quite simple: in the end, he just wanted to have a good time.
"I'm just trying to have fun," he said. "I think, for the first time in my life, you know, every single film that I've done so far I've been the only person in the room who wants to make the movie. And, I kind of am excited about doing a film where actually everyone wants to make it just to see what the experience is like and to see if I can do what I do in that world."
"It's not like I'm going to change my process," he added of his move towards a very high profile commercial project. "I'm going to be working with the same team, and making, you know, really trying to do something very, very different and see what happens."
During the interview, Aronofsky said that he's received a large amount of support both from franchise lead Hugh Jackman and Fox studio head Tom Rothman, joking that Rothman "doesn't even know how gutsy it is" that he hired the outside-the-box filmmaker for "The Wolverine."
"I've been looking for a situation where everything lines up really well. This just makes sense; I think I'm being hired because of who I am. I'm not being hired to turn into someone. I'm being hired to do what I do. I don't know if [Rothman] knows exactly what he's bought, but we're definitely going to make something great, you know, but it will be very different, and that's what I do. We're going to try and have a great time with it."

Is Hugh Jackman going to play Wolverine again? If so, this could be excellent. Aronofsky brought out a lot of good in him in The Fountain. No matter what, you know this is going to be a superb character piece.

I think Wolverine could make a fair claim for the most mediocre superhero film of all time. Plus, I always found Jackman's Wolverine the blandest of the characters in the earlier films. So a sequel fills me with a sense of impending pessimism.

But Aronofsky? You can sign me the fcuk up for that!

Aronofsky has dropped out of this (see here), supposedly because he doesn't want to be away from his family. Um, yeah, sure. Mind you, he seems to be in a custody battle with Weisz at the moment, so maybe there is some truth to it.

I'm glad tbh. This sort of project was below a director of his talents. Studios don't want good directors for films like this, they want hacks they can control. Watch who they replace him with.

That is disappointing news to see he has dropped out. I was excited to see what he could bring to the comic movie genre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭ChopShop

So it's agreed then, real reason he quit is because Fox want to use the movie to sell action figures and Burger King licenses?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,699 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

According to Deadline it really was due to family reasons. However, I suspect he wanted out anyway. He probably only signed up in the first place to increase his mainstream credibility. But Black Swan was a pretty big hit and he got an Oscar nomination for it, so he doesn't need to be doing comic book sequels.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,905 ✭✭✭✭Handsome Bob

I'd say Jackman is quite p'ed off right now, I get the impression that his enthusiasm for a sequel was very much born out of working with Aronofsky again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

I'm not surprised by Aronofsky dropping out. I don't mean to imply that a director of his talent is 'above' a particular genre (in this case superhero movies), but I don't think there is anything even Aronofsky could do to salvage Wolverine as a franchise. It would have only harmed his credibility IMO.

One guy who I think would be able to do something with a Wolverine sequel is Zack Snyder.

Even with his love of slo mo.

With the source material meant to be Claremount's take on Wolverine (which was aided by Byrne and Miller), and Snyder's ability to be so faithful to source material, it could be a perfect match up.

Wolverine versus Shingen (both the first and the final fight)
Wolverine versus the Hand (The window scene with the arrows would be cool in a film)

    Wolverine and Mariko
    Wolverine and Yukio

I would think that Machine Man had some influence on his decision here as well. Glad he ditched Wolverine instead :)

I liked the Wolverine movie, it certainly wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. The only change I'd make is take that guy from the black eyed peas, shoot him and put in an actual actor.

Now i fear the worst for this movie :S

The cynic in me says Aronofsky is purposely moving from film franchise to film franchise and using his time to amass as much information on how to do them right before making his own original story with a comic book theme.

I believe he just released a comic book himself recently, based on a script which didn't work out. If this all means he's working on something big, more power to him I say.

Jose Padilha is writing the Robocop reboot now, seems to be making a habit out of getting involved with Aranofsky's dregs.

He's a music video/commericals director primarily. He's made a few shorts but no features yet.

Here's the trailer for his own feature which is in pre-production with Working Title:

It's kind of strange that with "First Class" reseting the X-men universe, there are still plans to trudge on with this franchise. The recent prequel kinda contradicted (negated?) some of the events from the original trilogy, of which Wolverine was part.
