Why is wireless networking so abysmal?

I am no beginner to computers. Yet I have not managed to get a stable functioning wireless network working, just about ever.

At home we have O2 wireless broadband, and so we can both use it at once I tried setting up a wireless network with ICS. No matter what i set, it did not work. It worked the first time, and not since then. I have tried just about everything. I am unsure how a beginner is meant to get this working let alone me. It seems there is little or no attention paid to getting networks to work.

A lot of the problem is that a lot of the options seem to be locked away, rather than it being too complex. Though I don't see why it has to be so difficult anyway, like a Nintendo DS picking up another DS. Bluetooth has always been a nightmare too.

At the moment, no matter what I do, I cannot get my laptop to connect o my new desktop. When I try to access my laptop from my Desktop, it says I have no permission to do so. I cannot find what to do to allow it, I have shares set, I've even turned the firewalls off and all sorts. And it doesn't work. Homegroups are a joke.

    What to do?

what version of windows are you using on each machine

ICS is a pita when it doesn't work

on the client machine (laptop) you need to check the IP address
    then ping the address
then connect to the share by ip \\192.168.1.1\share

make sure you use the same username and password on both machines

I got it working eventually but it's very unstable.

it's possible that you're using a congested channel.

try downloading a tool called inSSIDer to scan for wireless networks. If you find lots of networks on the same one you're using, change your channel, see if it improves. It's also possible that the wireless router is simply sh!te

Idk man just set share with every one on the network and access though networks folder. Works fine over that. Ive managed to get it working over wifi but its slower so id rather just plug in the laptop into the router.

And homegroup is ****. It works when it feels like it. Just connecting over network is way handier and easier
