    Hey guys,

Just looking for some reviews from people who have bought Biltong from these guys.

For 1kg of biltong it is 38euro incl. delivery. Is this a good deal?

Is the order safe? I notice that it requires lodgement into an account rather than regular online purchase.

For the 1kg of biltong sticks, how many sticks is it cut into? 20 x 50g sticks perhaps??

Any reviews generally about taste and nutritional quality?

All advice and help is appreciated

I've bought packets of that biltong from a shop, and it tastes good, and that price seems like a good deal compared to the shop price. The shop price was around 5.50 per 100g.

I bought the straight biltong, which is sort of like shavings of beef.

I've gotten the sliced biltong which is fairly thin slices, tastes pretty good and the nutritional info is on the site...256 cals per 100g and 55g of protein.

Didn't see any lodgement info on the site, I just ordered by email and it was cash on delivery, Lukas the owner gave me a call on the delivery day to confirm.

It works out a good bit cheaper than the shops I've noticed, the 1 kg is in one bag so it does go off if it's not stored properly.

He's based in Wicklow and delivers to Dublin on a friday I think, not sure about the rest of the country. It was free delivery on orders over €30.

    Thanks guys for the replies.

I've put in an order for 1kg. Roughly how many 'servings' did you get from 1kg? Would say 50g be an appropriate portion?

Depends if you want a snack or replacement meal or what? Also on how quickly you can eat it, given that it's very chewy.

sorry to muscle in on your thread op - but can this be bought in small sample sizes ? or is there somewhere in Dublin that anyone knows of, where I can buy it off the shelf to try ?

There's a South African shop in Great Strand Street, near the Capel Street end, which sells it in smaller bags. Can't remember the name exactly, it's something like Jumela.

There's also a butcher opposite McDonalds in the ILAC center which makes and sells their own biltong.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. Looking at picking up some biltong to use it as a work snack. However, looking at biltong/cavemansnacks, they don't seem cheaper than at my gym (raw). Raw does 250g for €10 and both websites do 250g for €11.50 so Raw is cheaper. However, if buying 1kg the website works out €3 cheaper. Seems for the effort of ordering, it might be easier to just buy it in Raw given the small price difference . However, I'm open to correction if I've missed anything or if there are any other options out there?

There is a butchers in Leopardstown shopping centre that sells the cavemansnacks biltong. Which is tasty as hell by the way. I'm not sure what the price per Kg is but you could ring them up and ask. They're the only butchers in the shopping centre, O'Cuilleans or something like that is the name.

Sorry to bump an old thread but does anyone know of anywhere selling Biltong or Beef Jerky in the Dublin area? Just checked the Caveman Supersnacks site and it's €25 delivery regardless of the size of the order.

I normally order from these guys, very good quality.

    http://www.unclebok.com/Special_offers.php

If you order 1 Kg or more, it is free delivery and I think €2.90 for smaller orders. They deliver to my door in Dublin.

I tried a few different suppliers and found Unckleboks's biltong to be very good, they use the best cuts of beef.

the butchers beside Tesco in The Square Tallaght stocks them.

Have to correct myself here as I made a mistake and would hate to see them lose any potential customers over it. Delivery is €25 on one item, it falls to €8 on multiple items.

Maybe you cursed them because they've now gone out of business. I sent in an order on saturday and got a refund this morning with note saying they have ceased trading. Incredibly disappointing.

I'm stuck for biltong now. Uncle Bok is WAY too expensive.

Looks like it alright, had an order refunded myself. I found a store called Jabula up on Strand Street in Dublin city centre that stocks both Caveman Supersnacks and Hunter's Biltong, pretty handy if you're around the city centre.

It is a pity if they have gone out of business....

Anyway as for getting back to why I buy from Unclebok. I think you can get Unclebok in the shop who's link StarshipPooper posted above. If you look at the price for Hunters and Caveman compared to Unclebok, they look more or less the same to me. I have tried all the different brands and just prefer Uncleboks it is good quality and taste better for myself. It is just a personal choice.

I also buy 1 kg and more at a time, as it stores well if you keep it dry and out of the damp/wet areas. It is €55.00/kg and it gets delivered at my door. I use PayPal and never have a problem with them. I also got a few freebies to try out for them. They more than just biltong, but I mostly just get the biltong. I know they use top quality meat as they have posted a few pictures on there facebook page.

I am not trying to change your mind, like I said it is just my preferred brand. I am sure Caveman is ok, I tried it a few times, but I prefer Uncleboks.

    www.jabula.ie
South African shop in Dublin and Cork. Ships nationwide (and worldwide too).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 AlanFurl

I ordered some biltong from biltong.co.uk - The quality is good, probably not as good as Caveman, but still more than acceptable. The shipping was £20! Extortionate.

The other thing is the expiry dates, unopened packages of biltong expire 9 Jan 2013, but once you open it you need to consume within 3 days. The Caveman biltong had a shelf life of 9 weeks.

Basically this means you can't order in bulk to save on shipping because your product will expire.

If I can talk to them and try get that shipping cost reduced then I may order again.

I have you tried bulk powders?

I'd want to know what the ingredients are - like no sugar,no soy.

I make my own beef jerky , it's great!

Ah yeah that's the bugger, you have it get them online from uk, or america. If you're not following strict paleo you could use light soy sauce instead.

Thanks, I'm not on the Paleo (I follow your paleo thread though!) but would like to make it for a healthy protein packed snack.

Ah well then you're laughing. I think the aminos aren't as strong as soy so go easy on it. I made the recipe above and marinaded it all at once in the wet and dry ingredients andd it turned out great.
I sometimes make a bag of "trail mix" - chopped up jerky, nuts (love macadamias) and sultanas - fantastic.

I ordered from them a few weeks ago. Horrible horrible biltong. Had no flavor whatsoever. For the price of it, you'd expect perfection. They're still in business and are a legit company as I did receive my order, but I would DEFINITELY NOT reccomend them. Too bad Jabula closed down, they had a fantastic variety. WIll have to do some searching now to find a new place. Any suggestions?

Have you tried Stript Snacks? Their product is really tender and tastes great. It's not cheap but it's good biltong.
