Lenovo have clearance on some of their Ideapads.
€259.00 is a good price for an ideapad seeing Lenovo usually have above average price tags

I think it's just showing the vat component, but it's not clear to me.

    Have you added any extras?

All you have to add on is delivery of 17euro

Ordered one. I'm a huge fan of Lenovo thinkpads... I know these won't be built to the same standards, but it's still a good price.

The s10e was quite good but the screen resolution was too poor at 1024 x 576. This would be a worthy replacement.

Thinking of upgrading from a Dell Mini 10v to Ideapad 12s - but concerned that I would be disappointed with the performance. Are there many new netbooks coming to the market, or are they on the way out due to tablets?

should be similar to the 10v performance

It's a good price for 12", but the specs are a year or so behind, higher battery consumption from processor, standard graphics, no 11n wifi, xp home

Don't the S10's have a reputation for getting rather hot?

Looking at the OP link, I had my eye on the S10-3t (convertible tablet) at one point. Engadget gave it a very lukewarm review though.. the CPU was a tad sluggish.

Pretty much represents the state of the art in netbooks. Dual core atoms should give a nice boost in multitasking applications, and the ION will finally allow HD playback. Connectivity gets a boost too with HDMI and USB 3.0 on some models

Bought this netbook on foot of this alert. Great little machine / delivered in 3 days.

    Pros:
    • Light
    • Fast
    • Solidly put together
    • Decent battery life
    • Looks good
    Cons:
    • Battery a little loose
    • You need to hit the space bar pretty hard
If you want a machine for the kitchen / living room....would be hard to look past this at this price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭TM

I went through the order process but did not submit it and shipping came up as €0 for a total price of €259! In case it matters I chose PayPal so maybe if I proceeded to PayPal payment it would be added there or something? I didn't try CC instead of PayPal.

    Could you guys help me.:)

Would this Lenovo Ideapad be suitable for me?

Im looking for a little bit of laptop advice. I need to purchase one and the budget is tight.

I know nothing about specs etc and basically i need the laptop for part-time college.

I need something that can connect to my wireless 5mb Broadband

I need to be able to view online lectures of 1 hr+

I need to be able to do assignments etc

I also need something that i could install an accounts package on

Would this be suitable in you expert opinion.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭Jovem

This would be 100 percent in every respect but one

The machine does not have a disk drive.

Virtually every accounting package I know is delivered in the old school cd rom form. This machine would have no difficulty running most low level accounting software, but you may run into difficulty installing it onto the machine, particularly as you may not wish to spend a lot of time figuring out a workaround.

In every other respect it would do all you need. Not great at running 5 applications at once, but to be honest this type of use is typical of only superusers....so this wouldn't impact on you too much, I think

Long story short this machine is Nearly exactly what you're after, but not quite.

Go onto laptops direct or elara.ie. See what best sellers are and should get sorted with a bigger laptop with drive installed for about 100 more. It won't be as light, but will meet your need to install an accounts package.

    Happy hunting!

I would say its the best value out there at the moment, should be fine for your needs, most accounts packaged now come with download option, but if you really need a dvd/cd drive there are a few on amazon that connect trough usb and would be fine when you need to install on cd.

No idea of computer jargon etc, would this be suitable for me just to browse web etc! Bought a laptop last year but with 3 teens in the house, i dont get a look in!

I have wireless broadband in the house, formerly BT now Vodafone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭Jovem

    Yes....perfect for that.

I'm on vodafone broadband and responding from my kitchen, so same wireless functionality as a normal laptop

Exactly the same as your laptop, but a bit less powerful. Runs XP,so it'lllook and feel just like your laptop. For web / word / email......this is ideal....and much more portable than your laptop.

Get the bag with it, really well put together and compact.....all in 300 quid.....can't go wrong!

Borrow an optical drive or download it. Some machimnes come with 60 day trial so all you would have to do is buy in store and just input the code to activate it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Or you could get an ISO / Image File of it and use a CD / DVD emulator (e.g DaemonTools) to install it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,472 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

would copying the install files from the cd to a usb key on another pc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭Jovem

Comes with 60 day trial preloaded.....so you should be fine on this front

Is this the best deal for a netbook around at the moment? The larger screen sounds good to me, its 12.1" right? Is the resolution good? I was looking at the clearance sale in argos on netbooks, any there worth the price? All I would want it to use it for is microsoft office, Firefox, itunes, MSN, basic things like that.

Also is there free shipping on the items in the link in the OP until midnight tonight? As I saw this:

    Hi collegeme

You can install Microsoft Office on this netbook no bother, either by:

    1. Download from www.software4students.ie; or

    2. If you already have a CD copy, get one of these from amazon for a tenner and plug it into your netbook.

Based on what you've said above, this netbook would be ideal once you pick up a cheapie external CD drive for installing Office or your accounting package.

Would this be any good at getting as it works out about the same price: http://www.dabs.ie/products/acer-refurb-acer-aspire-one-751h-netbook-71V4.html

11.6" screen, 250gb HD, 2gb RAM. The only thing putting me off is the processor...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,809 ✭✭✭Stokolan

Was looking at this. But would prefer the one with the Ion craphics chip. Would that one be a good price for what your getting or am I better looking around for something better?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,855 ✭✭✭Charlie Haughy

Quick question, which processor is better out of these 2 for day to day stuff like, browsing, itunes, msn, office etc.

    Intel ATOM Processor N270 Single Core ( 1.60GHz 533MHz 512KB )

    or

    Intel® Celeron® 743 ( 1.30GHz 800MHz 1MB )

Thanks for all your help guys :)

I ordered last night and got a call this morning to confirm address and i'ts on the way.
    Got free delivery too :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭Jovem

    Best of luck with it.

Remember to keep it slimmed down, for best operation. Avoid heavy antivirus software....Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need.

Try Google Pack or Ninite.com to load all your favourite free software in one go.

Last but not least, keep the number of apps runnign at startup to a minimu....start run msconfig.....and disable a lot of the rubbish that worms it's way in there.

Once you do all this, you'll have a great little machine that will do all you want it to do at a canter

Anyone know who Lenovo use for shipping? I get a email from their distributor (digitalriver) last tuesday quoting me a tracking number and a logon to FindMyOrder but no link to track delivery. Email is a no-reply address

I also got a second email from Lenovo asking me for the Serial No of the laptop for warranty purposes. This was supplied in the first email!. Seems totally incompetent to me

EDIT: Forget about it - just found an enquiry link on lenovo.ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭collegeme

same thing happened me Farmer and i called Lenovo and they couldn't track my order....i askerd who the courier was and i was told DHL & UTI but they didn't have any details for them.

I googled uti and they are in Blanchardstown

    Hi Guys,
I'm really happy so many people benefited from my bargain alert. I'll keep my eyes peeled for more :-)

In relation to Lenovo courier. They use UPS to deliver there products.
Lenovo Desktops are made in Hungary, maybe the notebooks are shipped from there too.

In the West of Ireland UPS's outsources deliveries to a northern Ireland based company.I find recently they deliver the items in poor conditions.

Its very important to inspect the box when you get it and when you sign for it, write your name and unchecked.

My boss ordered one a week ago. They rang the office and I confirmed the shipping address.

A week later, still nothing so he checked his account and it was still "In Progress"... they'd no phone number so he e-mailed them and they said due to a technical order, his order wasn't shipped, and they'd get it out to him ASAP.

    Bit odd!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,855 ✭✭✭Charlie Haughy

I ordered a Lenovo U450 netbook off their website there on sunday evening, but on the order status it says:
    Order Status: Order in Process"

Is this normal? How long did it take to change the order status to shipped etc.?

Also do they always ring to confirm shipping address like basquille said as they haven't rang me...:( I need this by the weekend also!

Sent them an email like you said but got no reply for a few hours so I gave them a ring then... I was literally on hold for about 30 mins, ridiculous stuff. They better reply to that email tomorrow, or im going to kick up about this when I ring them.

    I wish you luck!

    I ordered the previous Tuesday

First of all, the confirmation email didn't list the shipping company so I couldn't trace. When they eventually confirmed that it was UPS, I found that the tracking number they sent had been truncated and didn't register with UPS

A full week had gone by - time to ring them
After 100 minutes of music on hold I gave up and opted to leave a voicemail - Mailbox Full!!!

I called the main number again and got through to the business section where somebody eventually agreed to take my details and escalate the matter. That was the last I heard from that

1 day later and on the phone again - got a real person who acknowledged that the tracking number was incorrect but could not tell me the proper one - internal inquiry needed

This morning, for the first time, THEY initiated the call, only to confirm the previous evening's conversation. - more internal inquiry needed + a promise of a call back or email. Needless to say, no response since

At this point I've had enough and think that, even if it arrived this minute, I would just RMA it back to them. I feel that if a company are so inefficient when selling something, they are hardly likely to be much help if I am looking for warranty service later

    As I said, Good Luck!
