Why do TV3 broadcast in 4:3?

As the title says, why do TV3 and 3e broadcast so much in 4:3 instead of widescreen like every other channel? It is really irritating and I can't think of any good reason for it. Any time I've watched any of their homegrown programmes it is in 4:3 and Napoli v Liverpool is also in 4:3 at the moment on 3e.

It's not exactly 4:3. It is just that TV3 can't be arsed to sort out the auto switching for the aspect ratio. For the match tonight it was a 16:9 picture in a 4:3 frame. It is disgraceful that they have left it go on this long.

TV3 are technically incompetent. If they have their own engineers, they clearly don't even watch the channels.

TV 3 didn't even have the decency to reply to an email I posted about 3e's permanent 4:3 aspect ratio. Presumably because they don't have a clue what auto aspect ratio switching is.:(

All Analogue transmission are 16:9 ratio but broadcast in a 4:3 aspect holder??? Sorry thats a bad discription.

3e and TG4 are always 4:3 on UPC is this the case on Sky?

The way TV3 and 3e are doing things is that they're broadcasting in anamorphic widescreen but not setting the WSS flag to 16:9 for widescreen programming. Therefore the TV or box assumes it's receiving a 4:3 signal so passes the picture through as is. If it was flagged as 16:9 the receiver would either letterbox it, crop it or stretch it out, depending on what TV type is configured.

Fully agree with this sentiment, cheapskate & two bit operation are the words that describe them best. They should never be given any support considering how they jumped the gun on Brian Lenihan's illness - unforgiveable

TV3 employees must have their Sky boxes at home set to 4:3 and watch everything in Stretchyvision on their 50" plasma sets :D

That's the only explanation that I can think of why their broadcasting standards are so technically inept

It seems to me that TV3's in-house shows are in 4:3 while the rest are in 16:9. Am I wrong? Also notice that Dr. Phil is in 4:3 on RTÉ One. Must stop watching daytime TV

Dr Phil is cheap daytime filler for RTÉ ONE, I doubt they'll want to spend the money obtaining a 16:9 version considering the minute ratings it's probably getting.

Well I find him inspiring

Are you suggesting that TV3 in-house productions are purely cheap daytime fillers so that TV3 can meet their daily requirements?:D

TV3 have been broadcasting some imports, ads, stings, promos etc. for a few years now, but home produced stuff (IrelandAM, Vincent Browne etc.) is still 4:3 - as for 3e .....

Also, studio shots (not graphics etc.) have a thin grey vertical bar down the right hand side on DTT...what's that all about???

3e seems to be broadcasting on Saorview in 16:9 for Jeremy Kyle.

It seems to be the complete opposite to Sky, the 16:9 flag is permanently set. Family Guy is being flagged as 16:9.

It appears TV3 is now fully 16:9

4:3 programmes on 3e are flagged as 16:9 so they are streched. Friends earlier this evening was anyway. At least they show the episodes uncut. IT would be nice if programmes were flagged correctly... but then again... this is TV 3 we're talking about.

If or when 3e go onto DTT after tests , it will be interesting if they sort out the program ratio problem. As they will have 100% coverage and many more people will be watching and complaining about the lazy technical issues, that could be easily sorted out.

I imagine that their technical department is the goons from Ireland AM

Looked at the broadcast of the press confrence to day, the green seemed to by flickering, same feed as RTÉ One ??????

After watching Vincent Browne, and Ireland AM, it appears that they are now broadcasting homegrown progamming in 16:9, and 14:9 as normal on analog.
