Absolutley, we can not have foreigners invading and pludering our national debt.

Seriously, who would want this place?

our navy should be upgraded yes, we have over 1,000 miles of coastline and a few rusty ships to defend against smuggling, illegal fishing in our waters and search/rescue operations

As it stands now, we couldn't fight off an army of marauding hamsters and for any real threat will have to beg other countries for help. Neutrality's worth nothing if you can't fight for it. Ask the Swiss.

I personally think that one of the biggest mistakes this country made was refusing military bases under the auspices of NATO. That would have generated a stunning amount of industry in its support, and kept a few people at home instead of them having to leave for work elsewhere. Militarisation leads to lucrative business, generally, and it should be encouraged.

Stupid post, in times of political upheaval every county needs a defence force to ward of invasion. A deterant more so.

Also, the army do more, such as cash in transits, protect presedents ect...

Should only upgrade the navy for fish stock protection and to catch drug smugglers.

    Ireland's already full of weapons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,708 ✭✭✭curlzy

No, I think we should use that money to get a giant saw and go down and detach Ireland from the earth and then get a load of tugboats and drag Ireland to the Caribbean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭DERICKOO

no yes definitely no, you want to know why? we make money as is from UN deployment, we are a small country, we already kicked out the British no I have nought against the UK some of my best friends are British and you have at least 500-800 ex special forces in Eire now with Irish citizenship.
we have been neutral and last time we signed the Lisbon treaty well that's history now.

    weird question???

I wonder how many supercarriers we could get for the navy with the money being pumped down the Anglo Irish Bank toilet ?

    Probably a whole fleet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭maxwell smart

You know what we need? A few Trident subs, that will sort out the Spanish fishermen. I think we could get them cheap off the Brits with the correct offer. We should send over a crack team of negotiators for the government. (Cowen and Coughlan perhaps?):D

No major upgrade needed for the defence forces just make sure funds are there to keep getting upgrades as they are needed.

However the navy needs a huge investment. We dont have enough boats to protect our coast against drug smuggling and those Spanish other nations stealing our fish.

We would rely on outside help for anything more than carrying out cash in transits!
We sold our souls to europe so their army is now yours! While were at it lets scrap the air corps! Its embarrasing watching them fly their spitfires!

Seriously, wtf protects you and have protected you from the worse internal security threat in Europe since WWII?.

Who patrols your shores in the fight against drug inportation? and during out recent 'troubles' patrolled the shores against arm's shipments?.

Who defuses the now daily pipe bombs?.. I wish the army press office released the true figures for these incidents.

We do f'all oversea's?.. Get fvcking real.. do some research on the humanitarian work we've done everywhere we went. Or when we brought Charles Taylor (Liberia / blood diamonds) to trial, and ran the hospice in Bidoa (somalia) almost singled handedly. Search for our record on the Tibnine orphange in Lebanon.

We do all this, and a lot more whilst our government spends the least amount of money on defence than any other European nation..

Oh, almost forgot - aid to the civil powers.. You haven't a damned clue on your sh*t talking about.

    In reply to the OP.

No, we shouldn't, we have no need to.
We are EU members and we are neutral, who the **** is going to try and invade us? Cope the feck on, we can't even afford to keep hospitals open why the feck would we need to upgrade our military? who's going to invade us, Iceland?!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

RobitTV, in answer to your question...

Certainly certain areas need upgrading, both in admin and weaponry/tech' but presently I'd say the boys and girls of our forces, our foot soldiers as such are trying to do the best that they can with the tools they have to hand.

    * Would I like to see things upgraded? Definitely yes.
    * Is it possible at present to do such a thing wide scale? No.
    * Can very certain areas be upgraded even given the present economic mess? Yes but its doubtful even if the money is there for that.

This is old crap, and ignorant.

Our threats have never been external. The threat to our state has always been an internal security threat.

Our navy has never had to be strong to deter invaders, its had to be vigil to prevent arm's shipments to those who's ultimate aim was to over throw the legitimate free state government.

It wasn't just by the grace of God that Ireland didn't rip itself asunder Yugoslav style buddy.

And they say ignorance is a bliss - ffs

I didn't say disolve the military, but it doesn;t need upgrading right now. The Army certainly don't, not to do they job they do. As for the navy, yes they are under funded and need new ships but there is no way in hell we can afford them right now, so why even entertain the idea? Get off your high horse for half a minute, do you really think we either need to or can afford to upgrade out military tech outside of the naval fleet right now? I'd be almost certain you don't.

Yes it is our military, If not then whos?

Some people seem to think being Neutral* means you don't need a military, If anything it means you need one more than ever, Being neutral means nothing if you cant defend it.

    *we are not neutral btw;)

Hahhahhahhahahahahahahahahha- our DF could not ward off Andorra if the Andorrans were not allowed to hit in the face. I have family in the AC and the Armeeee, and going by what they tell me, unless the Vikings invade, armed with swords and spears, we are fecked. And it could be touch and go with the Vikings. Our services are more like a well paid synchronised marching service with strictly ceremonial rating, a bit like a €12 samurai sword.

The defence budget is about 0.5% of GDP.

Its miniscule compared to the money-furnace that is the HSE, and it delivers excellent service at home and abroad, as Makikomi pointed out, and also comes in under budget which is something few if any other depts can boast.

These threads are senseless whining, usually populated by crusties, 'Ra heads who havent a clue, and Cruiser/Myersian fantasists who think the Glorious Empire should take over the Curragh or something.

Also to answer the question, I think the equipment (Mowags etc) won't need upgrading for a while.

Anyone noticed just how efficent they are at the whole cash in transit business? And they are. And I know the inside story of just how efficient they are, and its seriously impressive. Talk about having your priorities right. this whole feckin country is geared to serving the banks.

No, the reason we escort cash in transit is because the banks pay over the odds for the service, and it pays the grunts wages, and don't even bother to tell me I'm wrong.
