Are Ferguson and Man Utd. done?

Is this the end of Man Utd. and Fergie as we know them? With their star player Wayne Rooney intent on leaving due to the failure to add to the squad, this is not good for Utd. Rooney wants to win trophies and he doesn't see this happening at his current club. Having lost their best player to Real Madrid just over a year ago, have they now become a selling club?

The club is massively in debt having to fork out £60m just in interest payments per annum. The Glazers seem intent on lining their own pockets and have failed to reinvest the Ronaldo money in the squad. Measly buys by Utd's standards this summer in Bebe and Hernandez. Where will this lead them? Fergie looked demoralised yesterday in his press conference, he looks like he is coming to terms with the fact that they are not the biggest fish in the pond anymore. Correct me if im wrong but I have never heard Fergie criticise the Glazers. Is his time coming to an end? With City fast becoming the second best team in the League behind Chelsea and no funds available to buy world-class players the future looks very worrying for Man Utd. as we know them.

It's does'nt look good for them. The difference before was they had the money and buying power to keep them at the top of the game. Those day's are now long gone and i can see it all ending in tears. Their debt is quite frankly staggering.

I think its fair to say that United look to be a club on the verge of a big downturn.
I don't see Fergie continuing on for many more years at the helm.

From the point of view of the club and the fans, not by a long way, but from his point of view, it might be getting there. Spending will only get more curtailed, especially since there are no more 80m players that can be sold and the money left 'resting in the bank account'.

    It's possible.
They were a two man team, then a one man team and now that one man wants out.
Unless they buy some top class talent, including a new midfield, they're certainly in trouble - if not this year, then definitely next year.
I think they'll struggle to make top 4 this season, but probably will just have enough.

No way is Fergie finished, Man Utd are a team in transition and the only manager capable of building a new team is Fergie. Still a top class manager, no one else is good enough to take over from him now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,382 ✭✭✭✭greendom

Well I think for Fergies' own good he should leave now. I think managing Man Utd is going to get a lot tougher in the coming years as the impact of the huge debt really takes hold. Even if that Utd didn't have these problems he's not a young man and has had heart problems in the past. He should retire now while he's still fit enough to enjoy it.

LOL thanks for that blast from the past Muppet.

TBH I don't think Rooney's departure will do too much harm to United, in fact based on this seasons form from Rooney it could do United a favour.

I do think that Alex Fergusons tenure is coming to an end (unless he becomes the first Zombie premiership Manager :D), and then I believe United could be in trouble especially if there is a question mark over the owners finances meaning they cannot attract a suitably experienced replacement.

TBH as an Arsenal fan I have the same fear over when Wenger calls it a day as well. I cannot see a replacement out there for him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

I think Chelsea and City will be the two top teams for the next while. United will go the way of Arsenal for a few years, then hit Liverpool territory.

I'd say most managers would love to manage Arsenal, tbh. Some very good youth players and there seems to be money to spend. Excellent stadium, as well.

It's Alex Fergusons job for as long as he wants it.

If he gets sacked then theres no hope for professional football.

I'm not a Manchester United supporter but what does one have to do to buffer themselves from this sort of thread

Ferguson is a cheque book manager.
A man who has consistently broken the british transfer record.
Now that he has no chequebook, he's in big trouble.

Vidic and Evra - bought for about £12million, both turned out to be arguably the best CB and LB in the world.

    Yeah, arguably.

    Keane - record
    Stam - record?
    rooney -record
    ferdinand - record
    Veron - record?

off the top of my head

    edit: Cole - record

    So what.

He has shown over his 25 years at United that he is equally adept at

    - developing youth
    - buying potential and developing it into world class talent
    - spotting bargains
    - pushing the boat out when needed and spending big.

Thats why he's one of the greats - he has shown he can do it all.

Labelling him a cheque book manager is, like most things you have said today, nonsense and deliberately short sighted.

Is Mourinho a "cheque book manager" - he has built all his teams on signings and hsn't really developed youth over the years like Fergie has?

I think the thread should be renamed to 'Are the Glazers done?'. The answer would be yes, and violence is advocated

    Good day.

Ferguson and Mourinho have both broken transfer records. Managers will spend if they have the money. Ferguson has earned Man Utd a shed load of money, so he can spend it.

It's useless trying to argue with someone who's already so anti-Fergie.

Tell me, how much did this chequebook manager spend on Ryan Giggs? Scholes? Beckham? 3 of the greatest players to grace the premiership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,116 ✭✭✭Professional Griefer

The whole checkbook thing is hilarious.

    What about,
    Scholes
    Beckham
    Ronaldo
    Giggs
    Neville
    and many more.

Well? All massive players for us.

Its a team game, not a single player game. I would place all my faith in Fergie. I'm not worried, let Rooney go. People said the same crap when Beckham left, Ronaldo left(granted we didn't win the league last year, but 1 point behind a great team in Chelsea). And it'll happen again.

We need to get rid of the Glazers 1st, because we need to spend, just not huge money.

    Nothing.
How much did any manager spend on players that came through the youth system?

Where have these youth players, this great youth system, gone since the original crop?
How many of them have made it at Utd?
As Chelsea have shown and Man City will show money wins the premier league barring a few abberations.

    What about,

    Beckham - gone
Ronaldo - purchased for a huge chunk of money and gone
    Giggs - nearly finsidhed
    Neville - finished
    and many more.
    .
Where's the next wave? The ones who should be in their mid 20s now?

Grand. Hope is one thing. Evidence is another.
He brought through one crop of exceptional players. fair lay to him. But Maybe, just maybe, he got lucky.
I haven't seen any evidence of this great youth system since then.
Sure, it's turned out a good few players that have gone on to play elsewhere and has probably paid for itself. But, isn't the idea to produce players for Man Utd?
Since that original group, he has consistently spent huge money on players.
Whether he's the reason they have the money or not is not the point I'm making. The point I'm making is that he has, since then, been a chequebook manager.
