Be gentle with me, its my first post in here!!

Ok i know Jackie Skelly are an extremley difficult place to leave i.e they make it very hard on you.
Ive been a member with them for over 4 years now, but now ive just had enough. Ive looked at Clondalkin Leisure Centre and am thinking of joining them, does anyone have any opinions of them?
Also how do i leave Jackie Skelly? Do i fill out a form, or just cancel my direct debit with the bank?

    Thanks very much

I would do it by sending a registered letter to the branch and then instructing the bank not to honour any direct debits once the final payment has been taken.

Things may have improved a lot under Energie, time will tell.

I think you have to give them 3 months notice- but if you dont want to do that, just cancel the direct debit. they may come after you with solicitors letters, they may not. The old JS certainly would have.

If they replaced all the rude staff they have i would consider staying, but im sick of them.
Think i will just ring the bank.

That's a shame, there's NO excuse for rude staff! I'm in the one in ballsbridge and the staff are great. My JS experience has been nothing but positive but i acknowledge that i'm in the minority on that front!

By and large they're helpful in Rathfarnham, but one or two are still not up to scratch.

I was in the swords one and had no problem with them, then i moved to Parkwest where the problems started. My card would never wrk at Parkwest. I asked 4 times for my membership to be changed to Parkwest. Came back from Holiday on monday to find its all about fingerprihnts now, and that i would have to go to Swords to get it done. I asked to change membership again to Parkwest. Went in today and rude bloke on the desk said they are not accepting people with cards, i explained situation and he grudignly let me in.
Then after finally getting in, 4 rowers wouldnt work, the treadmill sounded like it was dying.
Just so sick of the old machines, and the fact that every class is now a payable one

    ALL of them? even spinning??

From what you've said, i dont blame you for getting the hump, that's CHRONIC customer service, how do they think they can get away with that??

They are all pretty sound in the one in ballsbridge i have to say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,185 ✭✭✭Snoopy1

Spinning is the only free one, but i wonder how long it will stay that way!!

Well i'll be gonzo if they start charging for spinning.

The only classes that are extra in ballsbridge are pilates- which is pretty much par for the course in most places really.

Well i rang Jackie Skelly, to see if i could cancel the official way. Was told by rude staff again that i would have to go to Swords to fill out cancellation form. I live no-where near Swords anymore, so wont be driving up there. Why cant they hav everything on a central register?
Went to bank and just cancelled direct debit

Oh jesus I feel like cancelling mine now in solidarity, even though I’m happy with them

    That’s woeful altogether

Cancel the direct debit it’s the only way. Then draft a letter to head office saying you attempted to cancel the right way, have no car so cannot get to swords, with all of your customer service issues as outlined above and that should stop them from chasing you.

They have to be careful now about PR during the changeover, so drop in a line about joe duffy as well and that’ll shut them up

    infuriating stuff

Ooh thank you, i never thought of that.
Will definitely write a letter to head office about their customer service issues

i worked in JSF and let me tell you this for nothing, there were sales men screwing up contracts on purpose to get their bonuses, the excuse for a boss was having it off with half the women in the place, it was a complete and utter joke, half the machines were broken, there were tiles hanging off the walls.

you people think its hard just being a member, try working for them, between the rudest most jumped up arrogant prats in regional to the even cockier gimp like manager to the thick loud mouthed duty manager, nearly every aspect of my job was horrific, i mean who the hell calls people as 9am to "push sunbeds" pole dancing and all the paid classes..........

that was all in the one branch, then i moved to another and loved every minute of it, the nicest people you could ever meet, manager was the best in the world.

thank god JSF is no more, just such a pity that they didnt shaft all the senior staff like they shafted me.:mad::mad:

I wonder which branches you're talking about!!

The change-over in Rathfarnham has been good for the most part. They kept most of the good staff, but at least one of the really good trainers who'd a great attitude and knew her stuff inside out has gone. They've hired a couple of new staff recently who are great fun and contribute to the general atmosphere in a really positive way.

I've noticed an overall improvement in operational stuff. The water quality in the pool and jacuzzi has had a dramatic improvement, but there are still occasional spells where both are freezing cold. The new music is also miles better and a lot more varied.

They also now have a photo of the manager up, and he's wandering around on a regular basis. I never knew who exactly was the manager (or if there was one) in the old JS days.

    Ok im worried now.
A letter was sent to my ex's house. Although it just shows that after 9 months of me asking them to change my address, they still didnt listen. The letter apparantly says i owe them money, its being handed over to debt collectors etc.
    What do i do?
Should i go in, and offer to pay for the months missed and pay for the 3 months notice, then be cancelled all legally?

Seems there are limits to that chain's touchy-feely makeover... Just ignore the letter, you only have to get worried if they take legal action against you but I have never heard of any gym actually doing this as it costs them much more than what they could possibly hope to recover. They will keep threatening you for a while and then probably go away.

I hope they dont take legal action.
Shows how bad the office staff are, as i asked 5 times to get my address changed and they never did it!!!!

I'm extrmely ashamed to admit I used to be a debt collector for JSF :(

It was not the high point of my career, let me tell you - it got me off the dole though so it had to be done! As soon as a new job came up, I was outta there!

Anyway, just wanted to you Snoopy - JSF NEVER EVER EVER took legal action, it was just something that was said to scare you into paying. Once an account had not paid for 3-4 months, we stopped calling - that was that. Just ignore any calls /letters you get. It's all bullsh*t!!

BUT also bear in mind I worked for JSF, not Energie, so fingers crossed for you that the legal situation has stayed the same.

    Thanks EnglishPollop.
Ive asked my ex to send the letters back to them, not sure if he will remember though.
Really hope what you say is true.

Sorry to say but it seems that Energie are every bit as bad as Jackie Smellys Swords. Went in last week and waited over 5mins at a table for the membership person (who was supposidly on the phone) to come out. The receptionists were more interested in updating their facebook pages. I went online last Wednesday and still have not heard from them. Any company that can't give their details straight away in plain English without trying to force you to join straight away is poor. In order words Energie = Jackie Smellys. There are thankfully other good deals around without going to the fitness chains so I am sorted locally.

Does anyone know if I can cancel my Jackie Skelly contract even though I have 3 months left on it because it's a different company now? I signed up with Jackie Skelly and they went bust and it's now Energie.

    EDIT: Doesn't matter, it's sorted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,185 ✭✭✭Snoopy1

Ok apparantly they have sent 2 more letters to my ex.
Im getting bit worried now, dont want anything to happen.
    What should i do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 698 ✭✭✭Rossin

keep ignoring them, worked for me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,185 ✭✭✭Snoopy1

    Really?
Ive asked ex to send them back the letters. Dont want him to get into trouble or anything though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 698 ✭✭✭Rossin

I don't see how he could get in trouble. If he sends them back all well and good because they'll realise they don't have the right address for you but either way it doesn't matter, the letters will go away in time
