Smoldering bushes at Monasterevin exit on M7

Tell me I'm not the only one that's seen this. 2 big bushes on the left hand side in the field before the monasterevin exit on the motorway (heading towards Laois) There's been smoke comining out of the centre of them every day for weeks now. It couldnt be simple fires as they'd be burnt away by now or at least put out with the rain.
Is it a sign? Is there a group of hobos living in them? Is it the secret underground lair of Brian Cowen as he plots the ruin of our country? God damn it I wanna know!

Ok here's a video of it ILA. I just uploaded it now so it's not viewable yet (still has to be processed or something)

And in the mean time here's a pic...

I didn't see anything holy about it but at least here's proof I didn't imagine it :D

Its how the farmer gets rid of the bushes, happens all the time on the curragh they slowly burn from the inside out,not sure why they do it this way but thats what it is.

And this has been happening for three days?! That's the type of thing that could turn Monsterevin into another Knock, you'd better keep it "hush hush"!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭adser53

No not 3 days! At least 2 or 3 weeks in the same 2 bushes!
Spurs I've seen that done before too but not like this. The same 2 bushes, in a field full of bushes for that length of time? The end is nigh! Repent lest ye be damned!

happens out there a lot, it's the ground under the bushes that's burning, it's very common around Kildare as most of it is peat.
It can actually smolder away for years underground, tis weird but true.

    Maybe its sheep smoking spliffs.

Ooo I dunno, it was weird enough stopping off a motorway to photograph a smoking bush. Getting out for a closer look is a bit on the mad side :p BUT.... she's still burnin! Just passed it there and said a few hail mary's :D

its true, there has been white smoke comeing from the same two bushes for the last few weeks.is this the site for the new garage or is it up the slip road anybody know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭adser53

I did'nt even know they were putting in a garage! I hope its a big motherf****er like the ones on the M1 and such. And thanks for backing up my claims harr, at least I know I'm not the only one noticing it

Jaysus, I must be on the dumb side.. I drive past there every day and have never noticed it... I'll be keeping an eye out!!
As Bodhan says, it's probably the peat that's burning.

Yes, yes i did. I stopped in the fast lane and caused a massive pile up just to take a photo :o
If sarcasm is beyond you I actually obviously pulled off the motorway, im not that stupid.
Edited to add that I mistakingly said in my earlier post, by way of a typo, that
I stopped ON the motorway but I thought common sense wouldnt make the need for a correction necessary. I guess I was wrong

    um
    1) You SAID you stopped on a motorway.
    2) I can SEE the motorway in your wing mirror in that photo. You're in the hard shoulder. You're not meant to stop there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 557 ✭✭✭Squeaksoutloud

Ha ha I noticed these bushes smouldering last Saturday evening while driving down the motorway. Prob all the dry weather we've been having as Dublin Mountains had some going on aswell or maybe it is something more exciting..and yeah it is illegal and dangerous to park on the hard shoulder of a motorway but this is Ireland and no one seems to give a crap about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭adser53

Right well I'll hold my hand up and plead guilty for pulling off on the hard shoulder for for 30 seconds. My bad, my insatiable curiousity led to a momentary lapse in judgement.
Rest assured that I'll present myself to the gardaí when i get home tonight ;)
Now that my haenous crime has been addressed, anyone have any ideas what wouldve caused the peat beneath to burn to begin with? Surely if the farmer had lit this to get rid of the bushes, he wouldve been back with a can of petrol to finish the job?

That's a minimum of 6 months in prison! Off to Portlaoise prison with you so. You'll probably be put in a wing with other serious offenders to society like jaywalkers!

Jaysus not the jaywalkers! I'll have to ally myself with the tv licence dodgers if I'm to have any chance of survival!

Just heard a car skidded off the motorway on the Southbound carriageway just after the exit for Monsterevin this evening. Ambulance and three units of the Fire Brigade were at the scene, hope they didn't put out the fire.

    Could it be related?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭adser53

it could be! maybe its like the sirens luring ships onto the rocks? its distracting drivers, pulling them off the road!

It is illegal to stop on a motorway unless your car has broken down. It is very, very dangerous, no matter what has piqued your curiousity.

I could hear the traffic scream past you at 120 km/hour.

The burning bush does look odd alright. But the land on which it's in looks like a little bog to me and perhaps it's a smouldering turf fire of some sort?

Agreed JK. But sadly, some of the drivers are really brainless when it comes to driving on M-Ways here. This morning, I went to the airport & the number of drivers driving in either the middle or outside lane was crazy.

But then I wonder just where we are going. This past week, I was in Dublin up near a hospital and saw the clampers clamping a 4x4 because it's parking ticket had expired. Fair enough I thought. They then checked a car 2 parking bays behind, and walked away. BUT this car behind the 4x4 was actually parked too far forward and had its nose in the bay between it & the 4x4. But the clampers walked away. For me, the car deserved to be clamped more than the 4x4.

What the hell is up with you people and your desire for a nanny state? This is Ireland ffs, we make rules just to be like the Brits but we're not supposed to obey or enforce them :pac:

I've never saw you post on this local forum before, do ye just do a search for "stopped on motorway", etc. and then come on and spout your little anecdotes that have nothing to do with this area or topic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭MickShamrock

You are right, it's my first post on the Laois Forum. FYI, I opened www.boards.ie and for the midlands there was this thread. I didn't know one has to be from Laois to make a comment here. All I am saying is that people must respect the laws of the road, as I mentioned earlier.

I guess from now on only people from Tipperary can make a comment on a certain pub in Birdhill??

This is the Laois forum, not Motoring. For the Motoring forum (which relates to cars, roads, and your favourite road safety), click here. Just look at the derailment you've caused on this thread!

What the hell has Tipperary or a pub in Birdhill got to do with Laois or a burning bush near Monsterevin?! Keep digging , keep digging!

I'll be holding a service there at 12pm today, parking us free but I expect their to be some protests from the safety brigade ;)

As for all the Gay Byrnes that have never posted in this section before but felt the need to come on and spout about road safety, I recommend you get off your high horse of unrelatedness and give yourselves over to the way of the burning bush.Maybe the stick that's up your hole might smolder away and give you a new outlook on things

ILA: Please don't discuss moderating on-thread, if some people "just get you " then please use the report post feature. Likewise if you have complaints or concerns regarding off-topic posts.

Though how exactly you quantify an off-topic post with regards to a thread like this is something I'd love for you to explain to me, through PMs of course.

StAying on topic, I passed the hallowed burning bushes yesterday, it was raining and lovely plumes of smoke were rising up from the bushes!
    Should we call:
    1 the fire brigade
    2 An RTE reporter
    3 a Priest
4 go out there and deal with what ever comes at us?

I favour the Joe Duffy option. You'd be bound to get to the bottom of it on his show and get attention. I think we should have a poll of who is in favour of contacting the show, since it's Adser's find I think he should have an input and be the caller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭adser53

Ah lads between this and the holy stones on the mountmellick off ramp I havnt got a minute to be ringing Joe "the ignorant $hite" Duffy! Someone has to pass the collection baskets around :)
I reckon we head up there on Sunday night (it is halloween afterall) with a few cans of petrol and a few tins and have us a good old fashioned bonfire and put the flames to rest.
Failing that, I'm with Bodhan on options 3 and 4.
    She's still burnin strong though!
May I propose we call it "Saint Adser's Fire" from now on? Or else Adser's Smoky Bush Bonanza? Ye have to drag in the tourists with a catchy name

well considering parking is free along the hard shoulder (oooooh, snap!) I don't think a fiver a head would ne too much :p
can you supply some beats harr?you don't mind being the DJ do ya? you'll have to throw in a few hymn remixes in there so suit some of my more senior "church of the bush" members though :D a bit of Ave Maria sexed up by David Guetta and Akon should suffice
