Depends where the Destination Was. I don't think I'd Go to Lagos or Fallujah for Example.

Yup, if I didn't have a dog I'd have left already.

Have you ever actually thought that family may be, perhaps, holding you back in life....

For example, youve no job, no attachments....why on Earth would you not flirt with the idea of making an attempt at something better. There are great opportunities out there for people who have the bottle to get up and go, and trust me, I use the word bottle because I know several people who just dont have it.

I left a month ago and Im enjoying the style of life my new home provides for me. Why would I stay at home and sit in my room all day, applying for jobs that just are not there....and for what, to please my parents...no way, Ive got to think of myself for once and see that I better do something with my life...

I'm out of here in about three weeks and doubt i'll be back, I don't fancy the idea of my great grandchildren paying off other peoples bad debts..........

surely pretty much everyone has the chance to emigrate tomorrow if they want

folks, theres nothing really keeping you, or your families there

if you dont like it, leave

    its easy

I'd rather the option of me staying and the polititions and bankers emigrating to phuck up some other poor unfortunate country...

I wouldn't, no. I'd love to live in another country and stuff, and maybe I will some day but atm, I have one very important reason to stay and as long as that reason remains, so will I.

I don't think so. I like Ireland even if it is in the gutter at the moment.

However I would very much like to win the Lotto this wednesday night so I could have the option of various luxury holidays for when I get bored :)

    Thanks though.

If I had to I would emigrate in a flash in the hope of a prospective job!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

I'm fine here, thanks. I'm alive, healthy, got my buddies, girlfriend & family here, I'm building up my qualifications at a steady rate, I'm doing unpaid voluntary work but gaining huge experience and enjoying it, and I love the Irish way of life.

Being abroad does wonders for people but I know within a certain time period I'd miss everyone. Hell, I'm only 40 minutes away from everyone living at home but I miss not being able to meet up with them as often as I could.

Wouldn't really fancy living abroad but definitely gonna get my ass travelling someday, Japan has been on my sights for years.

Have you ever actually thought that family may be, perhaps, holding you back in life....
I find that might be the main reason why I wouldn't emigrate right now, I would jump at the chance if a job came about but second to that only if a job came about I just wouldn't just hop on a plane looking for work I'd rather have a job secured before I'd emigrate though! I'm a home bird at heart though!

I have toyed with that idea so much, but would wait at least a year or two before I do anything drastic like that, still have a lot of family committments to contend with. I'm rubbish with foreign languages by the way!

    I say, do it.

You dont realise but if you persuade a buddy to go with you then itll make the experience a little bit easier, however, Ive come across the globe solo and youd never believe that being alone makes you more social.

Ive met some good people and have gone out on the piss with them on many occasions since. There are plenty of oppertunities to meet new people. Finding a roomate is a great idea but in general, building a new life abroad is pritty easy once you get the hang of things.

Making the jump will better you as a person, no matter if you are on the next plane home, at least you tried and you know what its like.

I can't get over the ignorance in threads like these.

I'm lucky enough I guess to be in a decent job and I tend to work all over. Time in Ireland, time in the States, occasionally time in Europe... I get a taste at least for things all over.

To be honest, Ireland will always be home. It's easy for all these nay-sayers to complain and say everything is better everywhere else... get real!?~? Have you guys even ever left Ireland? Even for 5 minutes? I doubt it!!!

If you had then you'd know things aren't all rosey elsewhere and despite all the bullsh*t generated on AH, Ireland is in a hell of a lot better state than a lot of other places, at least when you break it down to how the average person lives. Even with all this debt, i don't see many people starving to debt... yeah, maybe they couldnt afford 3 new cars this year, they had to make do with 1... what EVER will we do....

get some perspective people. I love when ye lot complain about how much the country is in crap then head off back to yer HD digital TV's and sky +, which surfing the web in broadband on your 1,500 new dell laptop and all that... give me a break.

i love traveling but i'd never emigrate. granted ireland has been in better states but i dont care where you go in the world the irish people are the best craic and and it is one of the nicest places in the world when the suns shining... which thanks to global warming is becoming more frequent :)

so tomorrow instead of everyone emigrating and spending their money in some other country go and buy a can of aerosol and let it rip into the wide open world :)

result = great summers, snowy winters and the best craic you will every have with a bunch of pasty people :D

We're (my wife and I and our at the moment unborn child) emigrating in the new year. She got offered a good job in a hospital and London and considering she's 3 years qualified without a sniff of a job it was too good an offer to turn down. Cant see us coming back in the next 4-5 years.

    I would indeed.

Back to Canada where i was born I'd say. Miss the Ice Hockey.

As one of the older Boardsies who left Ireland a long time ago in the late 80's and who prior to the downturn had toyed with the idea of returning home , it saddens me to see the whole cycle of emigration again , so in that respect it's 'as you were for me ' .I always thought that even if I did return home to Ireland ,the exierence of years spent living abroad would not be something I would regret , regardless of what my situation , job prospects , were I would live , etc would be after settling back home .

So to anybody who has to make that difficult ( and for many sad ) transition and upheavel in their lifes ,take it one step at a time and give yourself a set period .After a period upon were if it hasn't worked out to your expectations and liking and you wish to return home ,then at least you can see say you gave it your best shot but you'll are more wiser for the expierence .

Many younger ( and older ) Irish people in the celtic tiger years were able to expierence more holidays and live abroad with student gap years than any other generation of Irish so becoming accustomed to other cultures and nationalitys was an educational and valuable expierence for many . But with first time younger emigrants ,it's the first few months and year that is the hardest for many to adjust to .

    Good luck to all .

Fallujah might be O.K. now though, didn't the USMC carry out some 'reconstruction' there in 2004.

If I left, the country would completely fall apart.. =P

That said, if my family and friends moved with me [as improbable as that is], I wouldn't object. I'm firmly rooted into Irish society at the moment though, so it's not really something I'd consider.

I am going to guess that the tens of thousands of people/families who have been forced to leave Ireland are just taking the piss ?

I am going to guess that the tens of thousands of people/families who have been forced to leave Ireland are just taking the piss ?

No, you're just taking whatever meaning you effin' want to take from what I said instead of replying to what i ACTUALLY said...

I am well aware of the amount of people who have had to seek work abroad in their time... I include myself in that.

I still always love home though, if there is work in Ireland I certainly choose to work there.

What gets me is this rubbish of people sitting around on their 1500 laptops, their sky tv, their big cars outside the door, lucky to be employed and probably employed securely and paid well, degree from a top irish uni in pocket and all they can do is sit around writing on boards about what a craphole Ireland is.

I KNOW ITS NOT THAT EASY FOR SOME PEOPLE.... I KNOW IT FIRST HAND! So don't bloody lecture me thinking you know something about it I don't, but thats what makes it all the worse, those who have been able to stay at home, have things a LOT better than they can ever imagine and then have the cheek to come on here and tell me things couldn't be any worse!

Get a life. You have no idea what you are talking about.

And no im not getting worked up, I was merely responding to your jibe at others personal circumstance.

    Good day sir!
