Does anyone remember that lad from a few years back?

Had a fine boot on him so he did. He certainly didn't look like much, he wasn't the paciest, but give him the ball to hand and he usually got it over the bar. I don't think he'd fair too well in the current Cork teams due to his lack of mobility and that. Just wanted to start a thread on him as he was one of my favourites.

Any favourite moments from big Col? Funny stories or anything?

Having lived in fear of what he would do to kerry every year i saw enough of him. He may not have looked mobile, but i swear that guy could cover the first ten yards quicker than anybody else i have see.

Took Seamus Moynihan (our fan favourite) to the cleaners time and again. If cork now had a forward that was half as good as him they would be unstoppable. I mean no disrespect to the current cork forwards but this guy was special. Only the gooch i would put on a par with him (and only when he was on his best form).

I remember him alright. Didn't look exceptionally mobile, but had no problems scoring. Cork's main danger man a few years back.

I always wanted to see a kicking competition (for charity) between Colin & Ronan O'Gara, obviously using the ball from their respective codes. Not sure what the exact format of this kicking competition would have been but both could put the ball over the bar from anywhere on the pitch. Two fascinating kickers.
If Colin got good ball you were almost assured that the next port of call for the ball was over the bar.

    Class act.

Got a lot of unwarranted criticism because his body shape wasn't that of a Mr. Universe, but as one of the previous posters alluded to he was very quick over the first 10 yards and his accuracy was uncanny.

reminds me of Matt Le Tissier, always a bit overweight but a wizard with the ball.

Great player. Only saw him play in the flesh once, think it was Cork in a Division 2 final in 2001.

I stand to be corrected (because im not really a fan of Aussie Rules) but he had a crack at playing in OZ for a while, not to bad an attempt either if he stuck another season or two could have made the step up from what i remember.

Fantastic player - such a pity a player of his caliber doesn't have a senior All-Ireland medal to show for all his good work.

(The same could be said of James Masters too).

If Larry had'nt fallen out with him + Stephen o' Brien in 99 Cork would have won the All Ireland . Colin was a class player full stop. Never forget a score he got in Killarney in 95 in the Munster final from the stand side .

One of my favourite over-weight sportsmen of all time. He looked sluggish at first glance but he was a free-scoring player who could over-power any back.

I remember watching a few years back playing for Nemo Rangers against Crossmolina. Watching two of the best players at the time at their peak, Colin Corkery against Ciaran McDonald. Both had flawless games.

No one forced him to retire at 27 years of age.

All-Ireland Club Final if I'm remember correctly?

Now im not 100% sure of facts but he did have a heart problem from what I recall, hence his weight was always on heavy side.

No question in my life time the best natural forward Cork ever had.

Ya it was, there were two, in 2001, and again in '03, they won one apiece. I remember Corkery won it for nemo with a kick with his weaker foot from outside the 45 in '03, he had unerring accuracy.

Colin was a purely natural footballer. He was a very good fielder of a ball and once he had it, it was nigh on impossible to get it off him. He was cool under pressure, a superb freetaker from both sides of the field and a gentle giant to boot. He was also strangely quick off the mark for a big lad but obviously a 20yrd plus sprint would be too much for him to compete at.
He had many a great game for Cork and his club Nemo Rangers.
He's a very nice fella to talk to aswell. Pity he wasn't around for longer at inter county level!

I think this sums him up quite well courtesy of the great Micheal O'Muircheartaigh:

"Colin Corkery on the 45 lets go with the right boot. It's over the bar. This man shouldn't be playing football. He's made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man but he couldn't kick points like Colin Corkery."

I always likened him to Matt le Tiss aswell. Class act on his day

Colin Corkery was truly amazing. He was equally good with the right or left foot. I remember his first championship match for Cork against Clare (who were at the time Munster champions). He collected a pass out on the wing, went around his marker as if he wasn’t there, came in along the end line, briefly hesitated as he approached the edge of the big square, as though he was adjusting himself to kick a point, then sent an absolute rocket into the roof of the Clare net. That was the score which turned the game in Cork’s direction. He also scored a penalty later on.

In 2002 he was unfairly sent off against Kerry in the All-Ireland semi or quarter final, an act of supreme stupidity by referee Brian White, who, minutes earlier had also sent off Fionnan Murray. It was the only time in his career that Corkery was sent off.

Was at that came as a neutral,
Moynahan was marking him at full back, everything went right for Moynahan, he was pulling and dragging out of him the whole time at the Hill 16 end and as soon as the ball was delivered into Corkery, he was just trying to pull away from him and was penalised every time!
Umpires were a disgrase, I really felt sorry for him(even though I hate Cork)
Its the only thing remember from the game (apart from the emmergence of the Gooch as a real star)

He'll be one of the guys I remember when talkin to the grandchildren about when footballers were footballers!!

I was at the game the same day and it was a bit disheartening for him to be sidelined alright, I wouldn't say it was unfair though Seamus Moynihan was beating him sick and he got frustrated was all. Tom O'Sullivan and Finon Murray having fisticuffs along the sideline that day was priceless and Murray got a whack into the throat that left him seeing stars.

    Thread back on topic.

I think Colin Corkery is 1 of the best footballers ever to play the game, I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times (common friend) and he was always a gentleman, I would like to think Clare would have added to their success in 92 if it wasn't for him, he put on a display of football in Cusack Park

Colin Corkery. One of the most talented footballers of all time! Some eye for points from 45 yards out the field. Point he got from sideline for Nemo Rangers in all ireland club final in Croke Park a few years back was every bit as impressive as Maurice Fitzgerald's sideline equaliser V Dublin in Thurles. Was unlucky, along with Stephen O'Brien and Ciarán O'Sullivan not too win an all ireland - 3 wonderful footballers!

I heard another quote from Micheal O'M about Corkery, dont know if it is true or not

"His speed is deceptive, he's slower than he looks!"

He was a genius footballer tho.
