    Hi,

Just wondering what usually happens at this? Is it just arrive, pick up your number & goody bag and that's it?

Or will there be exhibitors, and a sort of trade show going on with different stands set up etc.

    ???

Arrive, pick up your number, max out your credit card, eat some pasta etc.

Lots of stalls, some exhibitions of previous race shirts and photos, talks from experts and generally a good atmosphere.

    Cool,

So I should allow a few hours to be spent wandering around soaking it all up?

You might be struggling to fill a couple of hours, but it's certainly worth more than 5 minutes.

Don't forget to go to the "Meet the pacers" stand and, well meet the pacers. Make them feel loved for giving up more hours of their weekend for our benefit. :D

But don't spend too much time on your feet!

Many a marathon has been made a whole lot worse because the runner in question did not rest enough the day before the race.

By all means enjoy the Expo, but try and get out of their quickly enough.

Again, this is where the pacers should come in handy. Act as seats and offer kings chair lifts to your car in the car park.

Is that what I signed up for?

If they could come and collect me from the bus stop and give me a piggy back around the expo it would be great. I'll give them a call when I'm arriving.

Some of the 'experts' should be ignored though, usually, a dollybird telling you to drink lots and lots and lots and lots of water and eat bucketloads of pasta. They have a nutrition degree...

    Very good advice.
The Marathon Museum will be well worth a visit. The man who put it together spent a lot of time on it and has gathered up some great photos and other bits and pieces.

One of the running shops will be there and I am sure they will have some good deals on the day

I'm going to be very boring and sensible here by saying you should get in and out of there as fast as possible. Its nothing to write home about, get your number, sign the impossible is nothing wall and get out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

I might go in for a wander around. I know a guy who will be there at one of the stands and he was saying I should come in for a look around. I'm not running the marathon either so I've no worries about spending too much time there :D

I assume the dollybirds are doubling up as pacer groupies. Tell them to save their energy for the 4-6pm shift on Sunday.:)

Watch out with the car though, you'll be charged to park in the RDS grounds. Bit silly getting you to Pay for the marathon with service charges, then having to pay to pick up your number. Leave the car nearby at a pay and display. usually a bit cheaper. Sundays might have free roadside parking in parts.

Is there a bus I can get out to the RDS from the city center? I'm staying near O'Connell St. and don't fancy the drive, or a taxi, if I can hop on a bus out there?

To get back into town it should be just about any bus that goes past in that direction will get you there.

There are loads of buses that go down Nassau street to the RDS - the 4, 7, 7a, and 8, probably more - but I don't know if they go through O'Connell Street.

Worth noting there are no Darts between Clontarf Road and Pearse on Saturday, Sunday or Monday this weekend.

Bit of a pain in the ar$e for those of us coming to expo from northside.

The numbers 4, 4a and 7 pass through O'Connell Street and head out past the RDS.

Or if you feel like a bit of cross training, you could rent out a bike from on of the many docking stations around the city centre and cycle over.

A bit of communication with the providers of public transport to tell them not to shut things down on the October bank holiday as there will be 12,000+ people, plus supporters, trying to get into the city centre for around 8am on the Monday morning would be useful. As well as the increased number of people wanting to get to the RDS on the days before.

one thing is at the expo, if you want to buy some of the dublin marathon gear 2010, the best time is around 4/5 o'clock sunday, as the reduce it to half price, well thats what they did last year, when i was helping, see you all at the goodie bag collection - i am working there all weekend, yay.....

Does anyone know what the story with going to this if you are not taking part in the marathon? Is it ticket only and how much do they cost?

There is a fee for the use of the pacers I think though. If you run within 20meters of them for more than half an hour on Monday then you owe them a pint, or something like that. They will be monitoring this by satellite tracking, especially if your anywhere near Krusty. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭mick kk

its 6 euro to park your car - even if your popping in for 2 mins to collect your bag. Terrible rip-off so park on the streets around it

Ideal Homes is also on there for the weekend so i'm told. That will add to the trouble with parking.

Ideal homes thing is on in RDS simmonscourt, the cowshed they put us in for the Trinity/UCD exams, its a bit of a walk from the main hall and theres a big car park out in front of it, shouldnt be a big issue.

try being the person at the top who has to get 2000 students to shut up in that cowshed. I've had students choke, go into labour, USA students during 9/11, students who **** themselves and a zillion or so fainters at the Trinity exams.

Anyone been to the Expo today? Any talks worth while going to? Any stall recommendations? Planning to head over tomorrow, cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

The pacer stand! Most popular one there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭thedavman009

I am considering heading by tomorrow too. Just wish it was on earlier. Was in Sandymount today until 10 this morning and it didnt start for another 2 hours! Wasn't gonna miss training for the Expo.

Is it worth the visit? Novice runner here and keen to pick up as many tips as possible and a bargain or two wouldnt go a miss either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭ct_roy

    it's well worth a visit.

if nothing else it serves to build a bit of excitement ahead of monday.

there's a great section with photos and press clippings etc. from all the previous marathons - really enjoyed that.

and of course you can sign the inspiration wall...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

Yeah the museum and the impossible is nothing wall the definite highlights, other than that it's just a giant running shop.

If you gve your acceptance slip to somebody else can they pick up your number for you? Or do you have to do it in person.

As long as the acceptance slip is signed by yourself there shouldn't be any problems. Saw a number of people today with multiple pages going to collect numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭Peckham

Spent 2.5 hours on the pacer stand today (from 3.30 until 6), and it was MANIC! Great to talk to so many runners about their pacing strategies.

Fantastic buzz around the Expo, and it's looking a lot better than the last time I was there (2008). Organisers have done a great job.
