Dinghy racing watch

What watch are ye dinghy racers using? I have a casio which does the mere basics, I start it on the 4 minute gun and it counts down to a short beep on the go. I does what it says on the tin I suppose.

Im looking for a watch that when i start it it will countdown, beep every second for the final 5-10 seconds and then begin to count up to give me a elapsed time for the race. Im not interesed in any of the sailing watches with ISAF 5-4-1-0 pre programmed, most of them seem a very poor quality and I doubt they would last me with the abuse it will get.

I had an ironman or a triathalon watch a few years ago that did all I said above but cannot find a watch from the maker with similar spec's now...

Anyone able to help? Im not half fussy, I know... :)

Watches are like sunglasses, they all make the same noise when they go overboard regardless of how expensive they are.

This should do what you ask - cheap as well. Had one for two years before it went 'ping - splash' :D

Had two of the sea pathfinders and they do the job as Steve points out. Both of them died at sea.

Fact! I've never lost a watch overboard but I have had my fair share of boom beating resulting in oakley's going swimming. Thankfully they floated!

Will have a look at that in argos, I have a very similar looking casio atm which I'm less than impressed with. Just have to go in and have a fiddle with it too see I suppose

I used to use a bog standard Casio countdown for this. However to get what you want, I'd run the countdown down by 10 seconds before the first gun. Eg. if there was 3 guns at 10mins, 5 mins and the start, I'd set to 10:00, run it for 10 secs, then stop until the first gun went. This also enables you allow for some fumbling time. The crew does the elapsed time.

Too much hassle, i race a laser. Plus, 10 seconds off the start I don't really have time to be thinking about looking for the stopwatch to start it. I just want it to flow from one to another.

cheers for the idea though :)

I have a watch very similar to the one that was linked to. Works just fine and does the bleeping thing as well as elapsed time. Only prob is it's fairly huge on a female wrist but I can live with it and if you're a guy I guess that's not a problem for you?

The looks of it aren't overly important. Will get a look at that cassia over the weekend though, fingers crossed

I had the Casio Sea-Pathfinder, a bit fiddly but pretty useful, of course lost it overboard,
got the Optimum Time Race Sailing Watch OS121, http://www.sailboats.co.uk/Catalogue~Optimum_Time_Race_Sailing_Watch_Integrated_Strap~p_OS121~c4979.html
its a bit more money, but does 5 min countdowns, timer sync, 10 second beeps and is fairly rugged,
much preferred it, but again lost it into the sea, so back to a Sea-Pathfinder.

How did you find the Optimum ? I was steered away from that because I read somewhere they were unreliable and kept breaking...

my optimum was fine, no problem reliability wise, and it took a beating, capsizes and bashes, only wish the strap was a little longer so it could fit over my wetsuit sleeve rather than wedged under it. As for the other optimums, there big, friends of mine put them on the boom, rather than their arm, suppose try one out and see
