    MOD Warning

This thread is becoming a magnet for idiotic muppetry and personal abuse. As of now a zero tolerance policy will be taken to anyone engaging in personal abuse of players. Chose to do this and you will be banned from the forum. Schools rugby is a massively important part of Irish rugby and having a thread where it can be discussed (intelligently) on the boards forum is entirely a good thing. However if it continues to be used by idiots to abuse each others schools/players and generally behave like children in the playground it will be closed.

Anyone know who the form teams are for this year Senior and Junior Cups?

I know Roscrea have a good team this year. They beat terenure comfortably at the weekend. Good centre and fullback

Rock certainly won't win it, their team this year is well below standard.

only lost to clongowes within a try i believe.but both teams missing provincial players.
A lot of the team that played in JC semi against Clongowes have graduated though. But the scrum is ferocious this year.
Played against Gonzaga and lost 25-22 in a farce of a match as the ref didnt keep score of the match, saying Roscrea won but Gonzaga did really. Gonzaga got the deserved result in the end.

Heres link to leagues so far:

zaga must have half a decent team - good to hear of such high standards of refereeing , sure why would anyone bother keeping the score :confused:

    How are Belvo looking?

Terenure should have an excellent crop of fouth and fifth years, both dominating JC winning years I think with Mike Brewer's son Harrison a suuposedly very good player. St Michaels have been strong at JCT level with several consecutive final appearance years, they do seem to have been spanked in those games though. Heard the scrum half is fantastic from several coaches.

Clongowes never seem to be strong the year after they win it but iirc numerous key forwards are back this year including that guy who was in all that disciplenary hearing bother. It's a cliche but never write off Rock, too big a school to ever be poor.

I'm curious as to how St Gerards are going? They did amazing last year and I remember getting my ass chewed off here for doubting they could repeat the trick.

Heard from a mate they've lost the majority of their pre season games against the top schools.

This is true, I expect them to do better next year though when the 5th years reach 6th. They'll be a year bigger and stronger and most of the team will have had 2 or 3 years experience at Senior Cup level.

The JCT team that won the Junior Cup in 2009 didnt dominate at all-they had last gasp wins against Belvo in the second round and 'Rock in the semi's. And only won the final against Michaels 5-3. The 2010 team dominated primarily because 5 or 6 of that team played in 2009. They are meant to have another excellent junior team this year. Harrison Brewer is the best schools player I have ever seen at junior level but as far as I know he is only just turned 15 and it may be another year before we see him at senior level. This years Terenure senior team will contain alot of the 2009 junior team so they will be a bit lightweight. I believe Clongowes are the team to beat with the nucleus of their all conquering 2008 junior team.

Fair enough I know Michaels were on the end of a couple of horrible finals-one was 36-0, was that versus CWC?

Strangely a lot of guys make their biggest impact in the cup when they're in 5th year. Sure Clongowes won it last year and a lot of 5th years were on the team. I wouldn't write Nure off yet.

15 holy ****! Kid is going places anyway.

Thats why I am tipping them again this year. All those 5th years who won it last year will now be 6th years. Of course it all depends on the draw-for instance in 2008 Terenure and Belvo had the two best teams in the competition but met each other in the first round and Belvo won in the last minute and went on to left the cup. Yeah 15-he was only 13 when he made the match winning break in the junior semi against 'Rock in 2009..

Nah the best 4 were Clongowes, CBC, Belvedere and St Marys, the bookies and newspaper favourites for the semis who all got there.Terenure were a good team though, they improved drastically as the year went on. Everyone of those teams had weaknesses unlike the 2009 Rock team which had none.

Vasya Artemiev? Yeah he was a brilliant player-particularly at junior level. Where is he now? Brewer has huge potential but still very young. In fact I wouldnt be a 100% sure he is not eligible for junior rugby again this year.

In recent years we got to the final of the Vinnie Murray I think when I was a student.

Saw Tempologue in action today... poor show lost 75 12 to an almost 2nd string Gonzaga outfit, id have to say my money is going on Gonzaga if they have good odds(they usually do) they had some very flashy backs including a lad in a scrumcap and 2 of the back 3 (all with white boots????), apparently unbeaten so far including away wins to michaels roscrea and Kings Hos

To be honest I don't really see how teams like De La Salle and Templeogue and the likes are supposed to compete. I'm on the Templeogue team this year so I'm clearly biased, but the game has become much more about being strong etc. I remember going down to roscrea in 4th year and the team got a hammering, few broken noses etc. Everyone was pretty depressed after the game and coming out of the changing rooms we saw the Roscrea lads with their protein shakers heading into their school gym? Its the same with the majority of schools in Leinster.

I heard a rumour, not sure if its 100% true now but, a fairly reliable source told me that CUS hired a Southern Hemisphere coach there in the last few years and nearly ****ed themselves over financially just to compete. The whole thing has become ridiculous. Now I'm not making any excuses, the team we have this year isn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but we've been smaller than every team we've played bar in the front row (we just happen to have two monsters).

Again, I'm probably making excuses and the likes but meh, make of it what you want. It definitely frustrates the hell out of me seeing that sort of **** on a weekly basis

I am surprised that you are surprised by this Oisin. The bar just seems to be getting raised higher with regards to physicality. The game has become so much more physical and I think it starts even before junior level.

i think since rugby began in Ireland , the country boarding schools have always been tough, farmers sons , extra training ... but head up they can be beaten, with a bit of street wise savvy:)

No school goes out and purchases protein shakes for their players, the **** they would get in the papers for it would dissuade that.

CUS haven't really gotten better at SCT level so it seems like a poor investment if true.

I wasn't highlighting that the schools purchased the protein. More so the fact that they actually have a school gym that they can work out in. Also strangely enough, I've found that Kilkenny and Roscrea haven't been nearly the biggest schools. Over the past 3 years I've been playing senior cup rugby Monkstown have always been massive, mainly the south dublin schools that are the biggest.

Regarding the CUS not improving thing, I don't actually know whether or not thats true so I wouldn't take it as fact.

Also, I've been told that the likes of Templeogue, High School, De La Salle etc. were all in a group together in the league some years ago. They then reverted back to this system where we play teams we clearly just can't compete against. If so, this is a farce and I've completely lost faith. We're stuck between a rock and a hard place, we get hammered at this level and if we drop to the development cup we'll hammer the majority of those teams. I know the High School captain and they're in the exact same boat.

While I appreciate where you are coming from, you must realise with the introduction of professionalism many players from the various teams will be competing for a development contract from the provinces straight out of school.

Bad for the youth game? Probably. But good for Irish rugby overall.

well I think its been a good thing that the cup competitons are now "tiered" as opposed to being just one big competition where the small schools get hammered. It happens less often now and gives the smaller schools some competitive games and a chance for some silverware

Well they've invested heavily in their gym and have a teacher who is basically a full time gym instructor before and after class and at lunchtimes. Templeogue always had a pool on campus, did they never expand that into a gym ect. I know the likes of Newpark Comprehensive have all that, not sure how much access to that though with the commercial and community commitments. I'm surprised with Logue, your quite a big school, bigger than most anyway. Has another sport usurped it in the school?

Templeogue isn't a "rugby" school anymore. It's getting to the point where you'd be lucky to have a squad of 30 by cup time every year. Most guys in the school play gaelic, basketball or soccer outside school (and play for the school the odd time too obviously). There were a few class athletes in my year who'd have played rugby in 2nd and 3rd year but stopped playing as sport got more serious and couldn't commit to 2 different sports; rugby lost out.

Given the resources available and the fact that most of the talented athletes in each year choose other sports it's not reasonable to expect Templeogue or other schools like it to compete with schools with better resources and a rugby culture.

swings and roundabouts Pauls and de la salle Churchtown have gone the same way , which is a shame - but other schools fill the void void such as Gerards and CUS who have made major strides this year , my son played against them and i couldn't believe the improvement from last year - zaga seam to be improving too, and michales are now an established power

p.s. i have many fond and not so fond memories of Pauls :-) and de la salle beat us in a cup quarter final by a disputed pen - but its a shame to see them go

The cup is tiered alright, but right now we're in a group with Monkstown, Roscrea etc. in the league. I've no idea why they reverted back to this system. If we were in a group with the likes of De La Salle, Pauls, High School, Wesley etc. I'd have no problem with it and this used to be the case. Why make us play superior teams? They don't get anything out of it and either do we.
