Halloween and Costumes and Stuff

We're only a fortnight away from the Eve of All Hallows, when the boundary between the realms of the living and the dead are said to be at their weakest. As a time of celebration it goes back a long way into the annals of history. There's a great deal of tradition and folklore about this time of the year. However, it seems to have become more of a commercialised candy-binge these days, at times barely discernible from any other public holiday.

What are people's opinions of Halloween?
What plans have you made for this year?
Do you have a costume in mind?
Have you any favourite memories of Halloween from your younger days?

    Discuss :)

I used to love halloween when I was younger but then the trick or treating stopped.. And it got boring :o Although I'm going out to a party the friday before hallowen (seeing as I've school the day after ugh) :)

Might dress up as john or edward. Or bring back the memories of my youth when i was given a bin bag to wear and get a plastic mask in the shop beforehand :o

Do you not have the Monday off? It's a holy day or something?

I like Halloween, but I hate all the fireworks and bangers :o And the amount of accidents and stuff that tend to happen.

I haven't decided what I'm doing this year :P But soccy, you're NEVER too old to go trick or treating! :D

I'm thinking maybe Elvis...or just a zombie or something :)

I don't think I have any particularly good memories of Halloween tbh, I have a fair few bad ones though :(

I used to dress up as the stupidest things :P Other kids would be mummies and witches...I'd be Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz :P

Oh i know i'm never too old for trick or treating. Sure you're looking at the girl who went two years ago in a bin bag and a painted vampire face :pac: and no, i think we've school :( Oopsy, dress up as cher! :D

Hated Halloween as a kid.Never had any interest in trick or treating or anything. Then about 5 years ago went to a halloween party down here.It started in a pub down the road with everyone in costume.
At midnight a funeral precession started.Walked a few streets carrying a casket up and into the club, up onto the stage and opened the casket.DJ hopped out in walked over to the decks and started playing. Was absolutely awesome and the best night ever.Dancing on tables till about 4am and I was completely sober that night!
Since then ive been hooked and always plan really far in advance. My costumes now completely finished for this year(gave up on the springy antenna and used solid plastic tubing instead).SPOON!!!!!!!!!

I need an idea for some costume involving the theme "myths, fairytales and legends"...its not for halloween, its the week before, but if I end up buying something I'll just use if for both! I hate trying to be imaginative with costumes...we never dressed up for going out when I was in school, but in college you kinda have to! :D

As much as this would be a good look for me....I'd probably injure myself with that mallet thing.

I'm just going to get a t-shirt, and write "GO CEILINGS!" on it. Obviously I'm going to be a ceiling fan.

I never really felt any great love for Halloween when I was small. It was fun and all but I never really looked forward to it or felt sad when it was over. It really was all about the sweets tbh.

Last year however I went all out and dressed up as Holy Mary. Best. Halloween. Ever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,089 ✭✭✭jefreywithonef

Don't particularly care for Hallowe'en tbh. Went out last year dressed as myself (no doubt I scared everyone, etc. :P) but ended up having to go home and console a friend which was a bit meh.

I actually wouldn't mind dressing up as a Freddo or Scarface or something cool like that but I'll probably be stuck here on my own this time as it's a Sunday and everyone will be heading to their respective hometowns.

Hate Hallowe'en tbh. Have always hated it since I was about 7 and got too old for trick or treating - the only good thing about it was getting lots of sweets.

Recently, it's just an excuse for scumbags to go out setting things on fire, throwing eggs and vandalising everything in sight.

Also, I don't particularly like costume parties (was terrified of face paint as a kid and still hate the thought of it now) so me dressing up as anything won't happen. I'll be at home, dressed as someone who doesn't give a shít about this stupid "holiday".

I don't really like Halloween, not my thing at all. I enjoy dressing up but not for Halloween, there's just something I don't like about it. It's no Christmas, let's be honest. :p

That's brilliant. If I'm doing anything this Halloween, I'm using this idea.:P

The beauty is its simplicity. Even simpler than last year when I dressed up as Napoleon Dynamite. I already have the glasses and curly hair, so I just got a white t-shirt and wrote "Vote For Pedro" on it. Minimalism ftw.

Minimalistic, you say? So should I (relatively) effortlessly rehash the lion or the culchie? :p*

    *Not Halloween costumes.

The lion is good, the culchie one just gives off the impression that your parents share too much DNA >.>.

I'm not the biggest halloween fan, everywhere's always packed and people get too messy, I'm the same with New years and stuff. I much prefer house parties. I kind of want to just have a load of friends over and watch a load of movies. Not sure if there's nitelinks this year, so who knows what I'll end up doing.

I'm not sure what I'll dress up as yet, I hate the whole girls have to be slutty thing about halloween, it's just not me. I'll probably throw something together last minute. Although this is quite tempting.

I never understand how ID'ing people works on Halloween. Like if people have a really intricate costume with loads of detailed facepaint, how would bouncers know if it's their ID or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭Jamie Starr

I've always enjoyed Halloween, as a kid it was a legitimate excuse to stay out after dark, take sweets from strangers, and stand dangerously close to huge fires.

Now Halloween's a legitimate reason to go out to parties and talk to people, because I much prefer not seeing who's talking to me.

I'm going as the Betamax Bandit from the Mighty Boosh this year, I made my costume last night. Yet who would have thought the old cassette to have so much tape in him?

Like most events Halloween has just turned into another excuse to go out drinking for most of us. I loved it when I was younger, it was a great feeling to be allowed outside when it was dark and staying up past your regular bedtime .

Pity it falls on a sunday this year, lectures the next day and all, but that won't stop me. Think I'm gonna go as one of these guys this year, I have the sunglasses, just the need the hat :).

I am resigning from ****ty piss-ups in friends houses this year, and I am going trick or treating! It is the only good part of Halloween! Theres a load of us all going as the same thing

I really wanted one of them, particularly the Dr Seymour Bush lab coat. Prices are fairly high though...

I forgot to mention a rather crap thing for me about Halloween this year actually - one of the young girls my Mum minds was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago, and a few days ago she said she wasn't going to bother going trick or treating, because she can't eat any of the sweets. Was kind of sad.

    Awh :( That's really sad

I couldn't eat sweets or anything like that when I was little (severe allergies, don't know how they went away, but they did..kinda) so when I went trick or treating, I'd get to keep the apples and raisins and stuff, and I've have to give my brother all my sweets and chocolate...fun times

I really wanted to go as a Harlequin this year but can't seem to my hands on a costume that will deliver fast enough, going to check out Ebay again maybe I will find something.

I got this as my back up one just incase...

I can't stand Halloween tbh. It's generally a load of girls dressing up as, I dunno, school girls and 'sexy' nurses and yeah, not my thing. I'd be perfectly happy if it just fell off the calendar. I'm not sure if I'm just no fun or something but I really don't get it. Dressing up? Seriously? Just... no.

Reminds me of that part in Mean Girls, something like this..I think.:pac:

"In America, Halloween for teenage girls is the only chance they have where they can wear lingerie and not be called a slut"

I can't wait! I love Halloween. I'm going as Ramona Flowers. Still have to put it all together though. And find hair dye that will wash out in one or two washes as I think work would kill me if I had pink hair. I need to find a full length picture of her too, I want to do the outfit from their date I think but all the pictures I see of her are only the top half.

Oh, and Oopsy, that second pikachu outfit is so cute! Would love to get it, maybe next year and it would be such awesome jammies. All cosy and comfy and warm

+1 to both of those. I really, really don't like Halloween unless it's centred around kids. Cause kids make it fun. Couldn't be arsed dealing with girls dressing as sluts and people getting hammered... I'm too old for that shíte :p

I'll either be spending it at my boyfriend's house FAR AWAY FROM DUBLIN or at my friend's house which is in Dublin unfortunately but better than staying in my own house where there'll be a party going on >_<

    Yea, I'm cool...
