Newbie for TCD gym

Hey! I'm really self concious and nervous about setting foot in the gym. I'm not overweight and I was boxing for a year so pretty fit. I just think the place seems so huge and overwhelming. (And every one is probably really young and trim)

I'd need a personal trainer to help me with a plan and to at least give me a tour and advise me on the machines so I'm not standing there like a sap not having a clue how to turn on the treadmills. Are they available there? Are they there on Sundays?

So, any advice on what steps to take? I literally live only 5 minutes away... :o

The TCD gym is desperate for power posers and young wans wearing next to nothing. (It's scandalous, I tell you.) Add in the fact that it's actually quite cramped, giving you the feeling you're in everyone else's way, and yeah I could see how the place can feel a bit daunting.

Here's the thing though - even though you may feel a bit of a prat messing about with the equipment while you try to find your way around, no one will actually notice. It doesn't take that long anyway to get the hang of things anyway, you just have to take the plunge and get started.

If you're not a student though, you might want to shop around. I'm not sure how good value it is.

Thanks lads. I'll ask reception about getting a trainer tomorrow.

I am a student - re admittance. Graduated 3 years ago... Only going because it's free and there's also boxing equipment there. Can't afford my regular classes anymore. :(

Yeah, if you're a TCD student then the price is right.

No boxing equipment in the gym. It's in the boxing club which is separate. The gym is new enough though, so I guess this may not have been the case three years ago.

Oh ok.. I was just going by what I read on the boxing site. Can you make sense of this for me please?? Do you have to be a member of teh boxing club to train?
Training continues Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 5 o'clock in the main hall in the Sports Centre. Sessions can have up to 150 people training at any one time so it is important to try to come as early as possible as there are inevitably queues if 150 people turn up at the same time and try to swipe in at the desk.New members are welcome at any time during the year. Just call into any of the sessions or contact us
Training sessions consist of two parts

    * One hour session in the new sports hall Mon/Wed/Fri 5-6
    * Sparring/pads in the Boxing gym

The first one hour session is a 100% non-contact fitness session. It is suitable for anybody to attend, even if you have no intention of ever stepping into a ring. The classes are free and will get you fit. You will also pick up the basic techniques of boxing, such as how to hold your hands to make an effective guard and how to throw a proper punch. A lot of our members use this training session simply to supplement their fitness for other sports or even just to get into shape. The male:female ratio at these sessions would be about 50:50. Total beginners are welcome at any time of the year. You do not even have to turn up for every single session, although if you intend to actually compete you will need to make a good effort to get to most sessions.

The second part of boxing training takes place in the boxing gym, which is situated on campus ,near the student health centre. This is a small enough room with punchbag/speedball and our own ring. It is in this part of the training that actual contact takes place. You can either do a few rounds of pads with Dan or later on have a go at sparring. A lot of our members don't get involved with sparring etc. and only attend the first hours training. There is never any pressure put on anybody to get into the ring and box. The opportunity is there for you though if you wish to avail of it.

Monday nights is usually "Ladies Night" in the boxing gym. This is just to allow more of the girls to have a go at hitting the pads or even sparring if they so wish. This does not apply though close to competitions when Dan is trying to get teams ready for Juniors/Seniors etc. However ladies are more than welcome to also come back to the gym any other night , regardless of whether or not there was a specific ladies night that week.

The boxing club have a separate gym with punch bags and a ring in Luce Hall (I think). I've never been in there, but as far as I know, it's pretty small.

Three times a week they run conditioning classes in the Ancillary Hall in the sports centre. These classes are HUGE, with what seems like a maybe a hundred people some days. This is purely a conditioning class though and most of the people there aren't boxers. After this class is over, the boxers head off to their own gym and do some boxing.

It only costs €4 to join the boxing club, so you might as well do that anyway. I'm not sure what kind of hours the boxing gym is open, you'll have to e-mail the club, or just turn up to one of the conditioning classes to find out.

I would think about joining another gym. The TCD sports centre is really dirty.
