Its very well covered in the book also about some experienced punters just cant get their head around value and swear by the 'picking winners' approach. He explains it all very well, but to be fair if someone can't get their head around that simple fact then they've no business betting at all, never mind buying a book on how to profit from Irish flat racing.

@SRFC, far more than 3% of punters are smart or winning. I would agree that >95% of the money placed is muggish, but that's simply because winning punters often can't get on or can't get on as much as they'd like. I presume you regard yourself in your mythical 3%? Local shop rings up every bet do they?

I cant believe i've just read that! A bookie might fancy something at a certain price, but if they are laying it at a short price then they are obviously happy to take bets on it, thus they regard the bets at that price as 'good bets' for them or 'mug punts' in your own language.

It is all opinions. If everyone was right and the bookies were always right then nobody would be making money and if anyone thinks otherwise then they are clueless. Anyway this is way off topic in the off topic thread. Also i really dont think we need to get into this value idea again.
If people dont understand it then fair enough there isnt much we can do considering how well it has been explained here numerous times.
A prime example of value have a look at Aidans thread. Just has had the 2 winners(i think or maybe it was 3) from 60(something bets) and is showing a profit of 20+. 2 winners would be considered a bad return from 60 bets to most.

I'm pretty sure there are some that pay 1/5 if the number of runners are between 8 and something. I should know but can't remember

5-7 runners pays 1st and 2nd at 1/4 the odds.

12 runners or more pays 3 places at 1/4 the odds.

So 8-11 runners pays 1/5 the odds.

Although I'm lead to believe that some Irish based bookies pay 1/4 the odds ALL races.
