My GTI was hit TWICE in the last month!

By some clumsy dishonest cnuts who didn't have the common decency to stick about.

I came across the dent over the rear wheel arch last month, after getting home from work. I came across the hefty scratch in the side on Thursday, again after coming home from work. Basically I work in an office where two stories below us lies a womens gym. I'm convinced that it is some numpty customers of theirs who hit my car while I was in the office.

Anyway, I'm now looking at forking out a hefty amount I'd imagine when I need it like a hole in the fcukin head right now. The pic of the dent isn't too clear, but you can make out the other one quite well. Fuming over this. Doesn't look like I'll be spending a penny on her for quite a while considering this will easily run into the hundreds, tax is up Dec and insurance is up in January. Not to mention a service is due in 3k kms where the timing belt will be done. Bad times.

Anyone have any idea what this could set me back? Or where I should get it done? (Based in Limerick - willing to travel though).

Have you checked out any cctv for dates that the damages was caused. It might be worth a go. Must be some cameras around.

You should talk to the paintdoctor mate, do a search on here or facebook.

There is only a dummy CCTV over looking that area as far as I know. :(

I was in touch with him. Unfortunately that form of damage (as in side panel/door) isn't the kind that he looks after. It isn't quite the same as getting a front or rear bumper replaced/repaired.

I just replaced the huge images with links.

I'd wager a full day's labour all told, with paint and sundries and you could be talking €200.

I recently got a bashed front wing fixed, was a good bit worse than your own damage and it set me back €280 and took a little over a day's work to fix it.

Sadly. weather it was a good car or not I've never owned a car more than a week before some twat has hit is in a car park.

Classics, modern even bangers. No escape.

One car was hit twice in a week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,721 ✭✭✭E39MSport

Accidents happen. The only way to avoid this imo is not to put them in harms way in the first place.

Some might say that a second car/sh1tbox for shopping/pubs etc is overkill but running my starlet for a few years costs less than the OP will spend on fixing up the damage. Peace of mind.... priceless.

Someone ran into my 8er in Maynooth Tesco while it was parked way out of the way. Last time it will see a carpark. Even for work I would take the starlet or the cruiser.

Has something similar (in terms of damage) happen to one of our cars. Took it to Carcraft (www.carcraft.ie) total cost of repair was €120. Doesn't help you when you're in Limerick I know, but there's gotta be someone around the West that can do the same service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

I've two dinks on the left side of my car, one at the top of each wheelarch and both clearly caused by doors being opened into the car. This may not work for the rest of you, but I take the route of just pretending they're not there. There paint isn't broken, they'd be expensive to repair, they'd probably reappear, and i'm not prepared to make the compromises required to avoid future reoccurrences.

No point in getting the guy's hopes up by guessing that it''ll be 100, or 120. Both the door and the quarter will need a complete respray. Even at SMART repair prices it would be closer to 225/250 - but a SMART repair really wouldn't be suitable for such a large portion of the car to be resprayed.

A truer estimate from a bodyshop at discounted prices would be closer to 500 IMO.

Get a price off Joe Crash Repair in the Eastway Business park, the only person in Limerick I'd leave touch my car.

Either him or Precision on the Dock road, althought they're very pricey, I've only heard very very good things.

last weekend i parked in a tesco car park, upon returning to my car i sat in, and was fiddling with my wallet, the person parked to my right had returned to their car and got it... but as he opened his door, he slammed it into my driver side door handle

they didnt even flinch or say anything, so my blood started to boil and i put down my window and said "do you know you just hit the side of my car with your door?"

the guy was in his 40s id say and he looked a little surprised that i challenged him on it, as he for sure knew he hit my door.

he glanced at the door and said, "but shur theres no damage"

i replied back with do you think you could be a little more careful next time? to which he said "sorry boy"

i checked the door after and he had scratched the door handle and taken a bit of a chip out of it

some people really dont give a flying crap, i spent a lot of money buying my car and always make sure to hold my door steady while opening it in order to not hit someone elses car

that and the boy comment had me fuming, boy? im in my mid twentys for christ sake.

Some might take that as a compliment BArra! I recognise your furstration at the whole deal though. Bloody dopes, they walk among us I'm afraid.

I honestly don't think the OP would get that damage sorted for anything near
€200 with satisfactory results. It looks like two panels will need to be resprayed like.

+1 on Precision ACR, I use them for signwriting and John is spot on. Never had a complaint about them.

The guy who does all the bodywork there used to be the top man in a BMW bodyshop so he's very good at what he does.

Happens every f***ing day. Was sitting in the car yesterday and a foreign chap next to me in a 99 banger absolutely hammered his door off mine. Small dent there but he drove off quickly and ignored me. So annoying.

My dad got a nasty dent in the boot of his car done recently, I think it cost about 200 euro which he was delighted with and sounds in line with what others are saying.

Can't stand this kind of thing, if you accidentally bump someone's car you should have the decency to leave a note with your details, bad karma and all that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 459 ✭✭PattheMetaller

It's a sickening thing to happen. I usually park way at the furthest end of the car park to lessen the chance of anything happening, or beside a perpendicular kerbline so I've only one side of the car to check when i get back.

another thing to watch is parking where someone with a shopping trolley might try an squeeze between you and the next car :-O

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Its theads like this that totally justify parking between two parking spaces...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭BArra

i would usually park far away in a car park, but as luck might have it, more often than not... there will be cars around you when you return

often leaving 2 inchs for you to get into your own car

i remember having to get in the passenger door recently cos a dope parked so close

    unreal

No they don't. I managed to get dinks on my cars without turning into a d1ckhead.

And surely if you had parked across two spaces you would have been less likely to have gotten the dinks?

Im not saying its right or that people should be doing it, but when I read some of the stories like the ones in this thread I can completely understand the mentality of those who do park across two spaces in an effort to protect their car.

Absolutely, I would have been less likely to get the dinks if i'd parked across two spaces. But i'd rather live with the dinks than be that kind of a person.

As I understood it, his point was that it was understandable to hog two spaces because some people are careless with their doors. My argument is that both are d1ckhead things to do - ie that one does not excuse, justify, or mitigate the other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

Why do ye keep saying dink?

Ah now, everyone knows that they're two different things! A dink is smaller than a ding, which is, in turn, smaller than a dent.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭ART6

The attitude I can't understand is that which says "If you don't want your car damaged, don't use a public car park. Otherwise don't worry about it."

I paid a lot of money for my car. I look after it. It is important to me that it holds as much of its value as possible. If I catch some dickhead damaging it he will pay even if I have to wring his b****y neck to get it.

So can anyone tell me from a legal standpoint if some twat puts a big dent in your car door with his can you take his reg and even ask for his insurance details ?I can imagine the reaction !!!Might encourage them to be a bit more careful.Like a small paint chip is annoying enough but big dents are just takin the p*** and they just treat it as if theyve dropped a sweet wrapper ....potentially thousands of paintwork ,depreciation etc

?? Of course you can, if you're lucky enough to catch them! I got lucky once, got €500 to repair the door.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,139 ✭✭✭Jo King

Yes you can ask for his insurance details. He has caused damage by the negligent use of a motor vehicle in a public place, which is an insured risk. The position is different in a private place. If he drives off you can report him for leaving the scene of an accident. The down side is that you and the other driver have to notify your insurance of a pending claim, putting no claims bonus on hold.

Thanks for the harsh reality check! :o

Didn't get a chance to do much with it over the weekend but will give that Joe Crash Repair guy in Ballysimon a call and will probably get him to assess it as soon as I can.

Sorry to see those pictures Fizman.

I only had my ST a week when somene put a dent (not a dink or a ding!) in the passenger door from swinging their door open.

Then some idiot women dropping her kids off at school pulled out too close from behind my car and scraped her front bumper along my back one taken two lumps of paint off and causing a fracture.

I didn't see either (was told about the women, but of course they didn't get the reg or car model)

Its annoying, very very annoying!

I always try to park as far away from the shopping centre/shop etc as possible then you are sure no woman/dozy people will park near me as its too far to walk etc!

And the same with multi stories....keep going up as they get a lot quieter up there...

Trust me, I do the very same. My problem here is that my office is two stories above a womens gym, and I'm often found to be parked beside these lovely car bashing ladies.

Lesson learned though (expensive at that), there is another car park around the back of the building that will be used in future. It's a bit more secluded and one or two cars have had SatNavs taken before (that's a different matter though seeing as the owners had left them on display) but I reckon I'll be going that route.

    OP,

I think the running strip along the side can be replaced fairly easily, provided there is no dent left in the door. I replaced both running strips on my own 3 series as the paint had been badly chipped from the previous owner. They were just held in with plastic clips.

Furthermore, even if the door is dented, it might be possible to get the dent pulled by paintless dent removal, and then get any marks/paint transfer removed by a professional detailer. This option (along with a brand new running strip) might well be cheaper and be less noticeable than repainting the side of your car.

Right, I've only gotten the chance (and the nerve) to get my first quote today. Popped into Clareview Auto centre in Clondrinagh. The lad quoted me €600. :(

He said the damage isn't too bad in terms of the dents/scratches, but the three side panels of the car would have to be repainted to keep the colour matching. I shall be doing quite a bit of shopping around, the kind of shopping I could do without right now.

    hi OP,

I know a business that are very reasonable for this kind of thing.

My missus hit somebody s car in a car park, took a pic and left a note. 2 panels scratches and a dent. I showed it to this guy expecting the worst and he said he could sort it for 300 ish.

Let me know if you want his details, don't have them to hand but have his card at home. He is based in Dun Laoghaire. He also can supply a loan car at no exta cost as far as I know(not 100% sure if its at no extra charge ) though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,605 ✭✭✭Fizman

Got two more quotes a while ago. One was €450 (ish) exVAT, and the other (JCR place that a few here had mentioned in Ballysimon) was €550 all in.

Seriously tempted to stake out that car park for any red car with any trace of white paint on it.

However, I've had, WHILE I'M SITTING IN THE CAR, people slame open the door of their car into mine at least 4 or 5 times. Once an old man parked way too close to me(there was plenty of space) and slammed open his door so hard that my entire car shook. There was a nice sized dent left in my passenger side door so I rolled down my window and said "Excuse me, you've just hit my car." he turned to me, gave me a dirty look and muttered "F*cking hooligan" and walked off without another word.
