Thats a bit unusual to hold a new event so soon after the last, but I suppose its the only way they can talk OS X now since they had an iPhone only WWDC.

I was considering getting a new Macbook Pro to replace my old iMac PPC quite shortly. Should I now hold off until next month to wait for this new OS?

It'll just be early information. 10.6 was announced a good 14 months before it was released, and any modern Intel Mac would be supported anyway when it does come out.

"Back to the Mac" - I like it. :D

Yeah, 10.7 definitely won't be released at this event. It'll get an early demo at most. The Macbook Air redesign should be announced as well.

I'm not sure if there's anything else we can expect. It's a bit early for MBP updates.

OSX 10.7 Lion? Sounds a bit weird.
Id rather a sneek peek at OSXI

i like the author's idea of OSX simba! :)

Well it's about time they focused on their computers again. Hopefully it won't be how they've redesigned OS X to run iOS apps natively followed by 1 hour of how their mobile devices are doing.

I'm also in the market for a new MBP but will wait to see what's on offer here. I personally suspect that they might try to bring touch to 10.7 and refreshes of hardware might mean the beginnings of a touchscreen rollout, giving them 14 months to refresh their entire hardware line prior to release (very do'able).

Either way my '06 MBP has all the same features as a '10 MBP but just slower older variants of the components. However mine is running an SSD so can keep up with most '10 models. So it'll take something special for me to break out the Visa and go 'gimme gimme gimme'.

    My keynote prediction:
    -Date for iOS 4.2
-Overview of sales of Macs and Macbooks
    -Preview of OSX Lion
-New iWork, iLife 11 and some all new app

And the 'one more thing' will be the new MacBook Air

New refreshes of MacBook, MacBook Pro & MacBook Air?

Air, yes, definitely. But the other two were only updated in May. They've both been on 8-10 month refresh cycles the last few years. It's too early imo. February for both.

I hope 10.7 is good, but I'm expecting to be underwhelmed. Apple are so concerned with iOS right now I doubt they've found much time for OS X.

What do people think would be good feature additions for 10.7?

Personally I think Front Row needs a major facelift. It's lacking so far behind third party apps (plex, boxee, xbmc etc).

I wouldnt mind an updated dock and maybe some enhancements to finder

I don't think so. This meeting is on campus, and those tend to be close knit information only kinds rather than anything that require the demos, theatrics and crowd pumping that are typical for product launches.

I could be wrong, but I'd say this will be a lot more like the iPhone OS 2.0 and 3.0 preview meetings (iTunes podcast link, both are still available there)

they've used the campus events before to launch new products so i wouldnt rule it out. they alu iMacs and unibody macbooks were both done at campus events, IIRC

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Apple have used their "town hall" auditorium to host quite a few Mac-related product launches in recent years. In addition to the above, I'm fairly certain the Intel Mac Mini was announced there.

Unfortunately it's been a while since a Mac-related announcement could fill one of those large San Francisco halls that Apple use for the iPad/iPhone - and we know the last thing Apple would want is empty seats.

However, aside from a preview of 10.7, a new Air is probably the most we can expect. i3 processors getting added to the 13-inch MBP isn't out of the question either (especially if the new Air gets them) but it seems unlikely imo.

    Hey Prof

    Hows things?

what you think of the following, thinking of selling my 24" iMac on ebay or somewhere else(can you recomend anywhere else) and then i might go for the 27". What type of money is a 2 year old mint 24" worth?

Personally think OSX is due a serious upgrade now so wont be surprised if they go to 11 or 15 or IOSXI(sounds like sexy when you say it)

Give Adverts a shot. You might get an idea of price there as well.
and then i might go for the 27". What type of money is a 2 year old mint 24" worth?
Which model is it? Does it have Applecare? It's only two years old so I'd say you'd get a good price for it.

Not just yet, I don't think. But with a name like Lion, 10.7 may be the last major release of OS X. So any major changes Apple have planned (touch screen, etc) will probably be saved for Mac OS 11.

Btw - I really hope they don't change the Mac OS name. All this "iOS Desktop" talk makes me queasy.

Apparently engadget saw a prototype of the new air here.
Doubt it is though - looks like a prototype Macbook pro 13.3

Good breakdown of the so-called prototype here:
    http://www.9to5mac.com/30835/11-6-inch-macbook-air-wont-replace-13-inch-version-have-glass-trackpad

There's alot of talk of a 11.6" Air, along with an "Instant-on" feature, which would suggest an SSD-only option. no HDD. Im more interested in the "significant price drop" Cnet are claiming it will have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,289 ✭✭✭Talisman

What are the chances of their being two MBA models? The regular one and a lite! The smaller size model would account for a price drop.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

AI are suggesting there will be an 11-inch and 13-inch model.

The MacBook Pro refresh was in April and it was delayed because of Intel production issues. A Q4 (Oct/Nov) refresh will sync with the Intel processor road map release - there has been such a refresh for the past 4/5 years even when the previous refresh happened in May.

The 2011 Q1 processors would be available for a March/April refresh - the new Intel chip set will have a bunch of power saving/green features that Steve Jobs will want to brag about.

Just had a thought about the 11.6" model - what if it is a replacement for MacBook and not the Air? That would allow the Air to exist in the space between the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

    11.6" - MacBook
    13.3" - MacBook Air
    15/17" - MacBook Pro

A mad idea I know but it would certainly shake up the Mac offerings and remove the 13" MacBook or 13" MacBook Pro dilemma for people.

    If anything, it'd be :
11.6 inch MacBook Air ( No Superdrive)
    13.3 inch MacBook with Superdrive
15/17 inch MacBook Pro with Superdrive

Not when you take into consideration the pricing of the current models.

    13" MacBook : €999
    13" MacBook Pro : €1149
    13" MacBook Air : €1449
    15" MacBook Pro : €1799

It makes no sense for them to produce a new 11" MacBook Air model and try to charge more for it than an existing 13" MacBook model. The 64GB 3G iPad is €799 so the new 11" product will have to be priced between that and the existing 13" products - who is going to pay more than €999 for it when they can have the existing MacBook for that price? An 11" MacBook Air for €899 would to eat into both iPad and MacBook revenue - the only way to make a place for it would be to remove the existing 13" MacBook and MacBook Pro. Then there is no dilemma about spending an extra €200 to get a better piece of hardware.

    11" MacBook : €999
    13" MacBook Air : €1399
    15" MacBook Pro : €1799

Edit: As for the Superdrive, maybe Steve Jobs has decided that the time has come for them to go the way of the Floppy Drive. If you need one it's an optional external peripheral on the lower end models.

Swapping the 13 inch MBP for a machine with no hard drive, no optical drive, no Ethernet port, no FireWire port, and with inferior battery life and graphics/processor would be crazy. It would only remove the dilemma in so far as people would probably decide not to get a MacBook at all. Enough of them already rule out those two machines because they think 13 inches is too small. How would they feel about an Air?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,806 ✭✭✭✭KeithM89_old

A great looking mockup from cult of mac:

    MacBook_Air_2_mockup.jpg

Dont think it will have the black bezel though...

Looks like iLife 11 and the MBA are all but announced if supposed discussion board screen caps are to be believed.

Rumours suggest they are only putting a low voltage C2D in the new Air, so looks like no need for MBP updates.

I would like an iWork update but that's looking unlikely as well.

Nope, aperture is a circular camera lens, this one looked like the camera in iChat. It's to the right of Safari on the dock in the demo computer.
