HIM 2011 Rollcall

Since Tunney has banned HIMers from the IM thread :P I decided to kick off a half iron distance thread as I intend to do one in the build up to the biggie and we had a bunch of 'em in the SCR challenge this year. Just need to decide which one now? My club may be heading to Alpe D'Huez which I think would be a bit severe 4 weeks out from an IM. I've a couple of 70.3s shortlisted too (cost putting me off) but this Sperrin HIM up in Tyrone caught my attention as an early season one so thats a contender too.

Anyone else have any in mind or entered one yet? With hoardes heading to Galway, I wonder if Kenmare will be diluted?

    Any other early season alternatives?

I'll be running the Barca marathon so won't make any decisions till after that, is that too late to decide?
Hope to improve hugely at swimming over the winter and like mcos price is really putting me off

Not at all. Barca is in March right? You could still enter Kenmare Lost Sheep for Sept. Its the only one I've done but its a super event (albeit under marshalled IMO). There is a link to my original (2009) log on the first page of my current log. At the end of it I have a race review of the Lost Sheep 2009. Fair play to you giving one a go Woddle, you have tons of time over the winter to build the swim fitness

Ha very good Shotgun, i googled it and I come up 2nd on the list for doing it, so I will leave it in for the moment. Taiwan is a bit far to get the pass from the Missus though. I will leave the pass for Ironman Canada some day:rolleyes:

I will deffo be doing one and maybe two all going well, but I dont know what, when or where yet.

Mrs C wants to go to France for holidays this year so either Swinford just before the holidays again or Alpe D'huez:eek: if I am over there. More than likely Galway as well as I would hate to be sat there watching it. Although if I do Alpe D'Huez I will probably leave it at that. Most likely though Swinford and Galway as the cycle in France would kill me

Timewise I am going to be ambitious, if I got my nutrition better and an improvement on the bike I would have been grand for sub 6. So this year I will look to do one of them in under 5.30, its a 47 minute improvement but I am desperate for setting myself easy targets.

That should just give me time to give my arch nemesis Ronanmac a roar on as he starts the half marathon in Galway 6.59...more sandbagging!

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to sign up to the Galway 70.3, a bit tight on cash at the moment so I'll wait another while before signing up. As for finishing time, I really haven't a notion. Not being able to swim the required distance at the moment, let alone figure out what speed I'd do it in, holds me back from coming up with even a guesstimate. I'll stick a time up later when I start doing some swimming and it becomes more apparent.

Out of curiosity, can anyone equate a HIM to any other event in terms of endurance fitness needed? More, less, the same as a marathon? Also, any idea what percentage slower than your regular half-marathon time you should expect to run the half, after coming off the bike in a HIM?

    Yours in ignorance :o,
    ronanmac!

I'll probably do Sperrin any ways and if I don't do an IM, add Kenmare as well (if it doesn't clash with the Brittas Oly - obliged to do this...)

The tri limits site doesn't have any info on this event, but there is info about Cookstown Half Ironman on 5th June. Anyone done this? Does tr limits really organise 2 HIMs?

How cold was it at Sperrin at the start of May this year? It might be a nice early season IM but as Roth will be sweltering, its not exactly replicating conditions!

I sure someone with some experience can give you a better answer but from my very limited experience
    ronanmac wrote: »

Not sure how to answer that one. Depends how well you want to do but I suppose it'd be close to a marathon effort overall. You can get around both but doing well requires hard work(so I believe).

    Yours in ignorance redface.gif,
    ronanmac!
I ran 1.50 and was probably in about low 1.3x shape. I did fall apart at the end of the run though. I suppose about 10 mins slower maybe but its about pacing the bike correctly aswell.

I'm not sure I answered any of that but that was my experience.

I'm not sure yet but I think Swinford looks good for me again next year. I've glastonbury tickets bought so it better not be earlier next year. Huge time inprovement needed but its the time of year for making lofty goals. 30, 2.30, 1.30 is what I think are the split aims so no time for transitions.

Wow 4:30 is fast!! Although judging from your log last year and meeting you in Budapest, I'd guess you have the capacity. Still bloody fast though!!

Hey ronanmac I did the Lost sheep on Hell of the West fitness and a month of hilly bike focus on top.

Ideally for HIM if you can go to approx 130% of each discipline individually you will be in decent shape.

Hard to equate to a Marathon. I though The Lost Sheep was tougher than running DCM, but then I probably didn't push as hard in the DCM.

HIM probably on a par with a full Marathon effort. The run off the bike might not be too far from your Marathon halfway split. All depends on how well you judge the bike on the day too.

I know yea, quite a lofty goal alright. The 1.30 run being the hardest target to meet I think. Just need to stop eating and start training again now...

The water for Sperrin was fuppin' Baltic - aside from that the race-day weather was perfect.
It is perfectly timed for a crack at a summer IM and saves you the pain and expense of going off the island for one.

I doubt they'll be organizing 2, as there were only about 50 doing the Half last year.

Information-flow was pretty patchy in advance of the race, but it came together on the day.

Date and venue change for Sperrin.

    From the trilimits site:

    Events 2011

    Cookstown Half Ironman

    (5th June 2011)

We have made the decision to move the Half Ironman to Eskragh lough in Dungannon due to unforseen circumstances and also moved it back to the first saturday in June!

Thanks Notwitch so Sperrin = Cookstown HIM? Pardon my apparent ignorance, can't access the tri limits site :o So the event this year was Sperrin HIM on 8th May (the one theat Liam D won) and this has been moved to June 5th and renamed Cookstown HIM?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭Notwitch

yeah, so it seems. A pity really as the early May date was more suitable - to me anyway! Probably looking at Nice as a full of 5 June looks a bit late.

Then again, a lead in of a HIM on 5th with the Wicklow 200 following on the 12th may be a good thing! I felt undercooked with a 4 week taper last year..but that's a discussion for the IM thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭Notwitch

Just to be clear - the sentence "We have made the decision to move the Half Ironman to Eskragh lough in Dungannon due to unforseen circumstances and also moved it back to the first saturday in June!" is a direct quote from their website.

I have nothing to do with trilimits - other than enjoying last years race.

I've emailed 'em for more info. I'll post any reponse I get.

5th June is right at the end of the build period for me and before the 4 week taper block... hmmm As much as I'd love to do the Alpe D'huez is a brute of a race to recover from so another time (+ lots and lots more base and mountain training!)

The half is pretty much half of the IM course. The swim and run look nice but the bike isn't supposed to be too inspiring.

I've heard great things about Wanaka- if I do go full IM (no plans at the moment!) that would be no 1 on my list too. The lake can be chilly but the scenery for bike and run is magnificent. And it's a small enough place that the whole town is taken over by triathletes for the week. Then again that happens at IMNZ too...

Hi Micheal, Yea our half iron last year was a great sucess and everyone went home happy with the event and their goody bags, which some said were better than they got at official ironman and ironman Hawaii...next year we are having to move the event to Eskragh lough just outside Dungannon in co Tyrone which promises to be a fast course and good for those chasing a new P.B.....

Online entry is now open at Www.runireland.com and the date is 4th June and the entry fee is £85...same as last year, and if know of anyone who done the event will tell you that not only did they get well fed after the race but also their crews and family didn't go without either..at Trilimits we feel it's not just the athlete you have to look after but all who comes with them as it's a long day for them to..
Hopefully this may intice you to come up and give it a Tri....
P.s with this new event we will be able to offer camping and room hire to cut costs for the athlete...

Keep an eye on the website for updates on the Half Iron

    Bob

as I said I would. An option for an early season HIM perhaps. Thinking about it myself.

thanks for checking that out, it does look good, the guys I know who did their race last year were happy with it. I had been toying with the idea of Galway or Kenmare but might look to do an early one as well, so that I would have something very tangible to aim for early in the year.

(I am lost without mr. fink , gonna have to find some new programme to follow like a zombie :o)

70.3 option out as the funds won't allow. The 2 main goals next year are away trips next year so 70.3 can wait another time. I'll be following the Galway bound boardsies with interest.

Still undecided really but I have entered Galway 70.3, I want an A race to aim for at that time of year. However Beijing World Champs 2011 still has me intrigued, unfortunately I can not see anyway of funding that 'once in a life time' opportunity. Terrific that my home city got this event and great to have it as a back up plan.

I'll make the call when Brian Lenihan forces my hand

Okay, so to inject some discussion into this thread...

What training are people doing at the moment? My next few weeks are all endurance and skills. Lots and lots of time in zone2 with my main short term goal being reducing cardiac drift and dropping the extra 1.5 stone I put on over the past 2 months.

Doing very little myself and I can feel the weight piling on

Have started a weights programme for my lunchtime breaks - its mainly focused on my leg and core muscles for the swimming and cycling.

Have had a few slow runs keeping heart rate under 150, I will start to increase these from January 1st

Hoping to focus on turbo sessions over the winter so The Wire Season 1 and the Pacific have been downloaded, an ALDI DVD player has been purchased also so now I need a TV for the shed

In the main I will be focusing on Cycling, some strength work, and I am going to start back on the swimming come november 1st (big booze weekend coming up)

Very similar. Everyting except for swimming at Z1-Z2 range. Like you improve the cardiac drift by stubbornly sticking to base training. For example on the turbo I aim to maintain a cadence of 90 so my hr creeps up. At some point I have to drop a gear to maintain the cadence and zone. I'm aiming to push that point out as a sign that my base fitness is growing.

Also, skills. Mostly running and swimming drills. I have one specific swim session that is mostly drills and for running I'll be making use of the skipping rope gathering dust in a room.

I'm not going ot focus on weight other than monitor it. The extensive base training at lower zones especially Z1 will adapt the body for metabolising fat for energy. This will ultimately reduce your body fat.

Two of them Oryx in your 1st year

You really like to jump in at the deep end. I got engaged in Antwerp its a lovely place.

Your schedule is similiar to mine I will be looking at Swinford & more than likely Galway on the same weekends as your races. I am hoping 6 weeks is enough time to race them both

You just need to read Oryx's training log to understand. She is a tough cookie! A junior hunnymonster methinks

Hopefully once the fitness is up, 6 weeks will be fine.

My biggest problem is finding the entry fees. :o

Edit: dunno about the junior anything. Im 40 in January. What better excuse do I need?? :)

go away outta that. This thread is for wildly ambitious targets and I need someone to raise me on my time. I'm beginning to feel the pressure.
