Irish Version of IBOOD: GRUUPY

A new business has been set up in Ireland offering discounts on electronic products. www.gruupy.com It's similar to IBOOD in that they have a new product on sale each day. But, the catch is they need to get a minimum number of buyers on each item to be get the offered, discounted price.

Today, they have a compact Vivitar camera on sale for €89, including shipping. It can be bought on a co.uk website for €85 (inc. shipping), so I'm not sure how much value they think they are adding here.

Anyhow, it's something to keep an eye on, the odd bargain or two might pop up here.

As a previous suffered of Vivitar I would urge everyone to avoid.

Will be interesting to see if they succeed.

€90 for a 8mp camera that seems ancient in terms of technology. Did a google search and literally nothing came up for sale. This camera looks as if it is YEARS old.

They're being roasted in thier comments.

But I'm sure they'll get better with time.

Just read through their terms and conditions. So unbelievably unprofessional. They seem as if they have been drafted by a non legally trained individual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Just had a look at the website, really annoying. Prices for previous deals not displayed until you look at the details.

But if they can do some decent offers with free or low cost shipping it can only be a good thing. Boffer is gone to crap lately and the extra shipping charges are a joke.

Just had a quick look at there Terms and Conditions

    You are not to

Stop anyone else from writing cool stuff. LOL

Upload anything which break or hurt anyone else’s computer.

Another gem from the Terms and Conditions:
You’re only allowed save money by using the site. You’re not allowed to make money, so everything we do for you is for personal and non-commercial use. That means you can’t copy, change, distribute, license, make money from, perform, publish, reproduce, send, show, transfer, any products and services you got from GruUpy.com.
So not only can I not resell anything I buy but I can't even show it to anybody.

How could anybody purchase something from a site with T's & C's like that?!
By using this site you promise that you are 18 or over.
You’re not allowed to even try to get into other peoples account, or the GruUpy.com super computers. In other words, don’t hack us. Be cool. If you get the urge to do anything un-cool, phone us. You never know, a group hug could help these urges subside.
    Are they for real?

There's no way this can be a legitimate business run by professionals.

I read about them last Friday - see this link from Irish Times

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2010/1008/1224280635708.html

so I think they are legit alright.....

"The company is backed by Collins’s own money. He sold his original business Demonware to Activision for over $10 million in 2007 and last year Gamestop, the world’s largest computer game retailer, took a majority stake in Jolt Online Gaming where he remains chief executive."

I forecast this site will fail. It's actually depressing to see a camera like that up there with "Price: €89.00 (Save: €60.00) "

    What a load of toss.

They have an ipod dock up today claiming it is a saving of €7 from Amazon's price but its actually cheaper by about €2 on Amazon
Can't see this site taking off at all unless they actually get some good deals on things people will buy. €240 for an ipod dock, what are they thinking!?

Aha. I heard that someone in Tyrrelstown bought two of these second hand on ebay. Makes sense now.

how do you figure? it is cheaper on amazon.co.uk coming in at €227.09 but i don't know what the delivery charge is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭Svetti Arss

if that value of the goods purchased direct from amazon is => £25 they ship free to Ireland.

    Crap site wont last.

I completely agree that the camera offer was ill-judged. However, it is clear that they have looked at the feedback and KNOW that they messed up. I know that their writing style on the website is humerous in nature, but at the end of the day, it's all about the product they offer.

With this in mind, I am happy to keep an eye out for whatever they are selling.

Current offer looks pretty good, nice dock with video output

If I didnt already have two docks I might go for it

Free, because the item is over £35.

However the VAT rate will change because you're from Ireland so it's not a straight conversion over at xe.com to give you the right price.

I have being watching this site the last few days hopeing for something good to come along at a good price.
But i have too say i will never buy anything from this site no matter how good the price is my reason being if the item is broken you can not get a refund what a joke of a web site
    Quoted from T & C
"Sorry about that. Unfortunately because of how our suppliers work (very small quantities, it’s usually impossible to do refunds) so we offer full credit for anything else you want to buy in the future."

That's in contravention of EU regs on distance selling, which give consumers an absolute right to return any product bought online within 7 days of delivery for a full refund. The product need not be faulty and you don't have to give any reason for returning it. Also, they are not exempt from the provisions of the Sale of Goods Acts which set out that where goods are not fit for purpose, not as described, or not of merchantable quality, consumers are entitled to a full refund and do not have to accept a credit note.

which is probably why it says "usually", just a clever way of trying to keep business with them. i dont think the terms and conditions are all that stupid when you really look at it, they're just written in an unusual manner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,914 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

at about 10.30pm last night the webpage said that it had only 3 of the 10 people to needed to "do the deal" which ended at midnight.

Today, if you look back at yesterdays deal it says "deal done".

Clearly 7 or more people jumped at the chance to get this camera between 10.30pm and midnight.

If by "unusual" you mean written by a 16 year old, then their T&C's are definitely unusual alright !!!

Sounds to me like the guy who wrote the T&Cs only reads the back of Innocent smoothies or summat. Bit different being witty on a drinks carton Vs on a T&C doc for an item worth a few hundred euro!

After reading "What we have to say..." on the gruppy website about this phone this seems a reasonable question to ask.

Id say these phones have been in in storage for about 10 years. They probably still use pulse dialling.

they're only chancing their arm with that, which is why it says usually impossible, because it is your right to not have to accept a credit note, and nothing they write in their T&C's can affect that.

    The answer I received

    NCACSR <ask@consumerconnect.ie> to ...................

    Our Ref: 191241

    Dear Mr ........

Thank you for contacting the National Consumer Agency (NCA) with your query regarding regarding the website Gruupy.com.

When a consumer purchases goods online from an EU website, they are covered by various pieces of legislation, one of which is The Electronic Commerce Act 2000 commonly known as eCommerce legislation. One of the requirements for a web trader under this Act, is to provide the consumer with certain information before they purchase goods online, as outlined below:

    · Their name and address

    · A description of the goods/services

    · The price of the goods (including taxes)

    · The delivery costs

    · The arrangements for payment

    · The conditions for delivery

    · The existence of a right to cancel - the “cooling-off” period and how to go about cancelling

    · The general terms and conditions of the contract

    · Any other important information

From reviewing the information provided in your email, it would appear the web trader does not provide a global geographical address which is one the requirements as outlined in the above list. In this particular instance it could therefore be a breach of eCommerce legislation.

In addition to this, the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980 gives legal rights to consumers in their dealings with retailers and service suppliers. The Act empowers consumers to take action for themselves. Most issues under the Act are civil legal matters to be dealt with between the parties to the contract. Under the Act, goods should be:

    · Of merchantable quality - the goods are of an acceptable standard

    · As described - false or exaggerated claims must not be made by the seller

    · Fit for intended purpose - be fit for the purpose they were bought for

    · Correspond to the sample

Where goods do not conform to the above criteria, you are entitled under the Act to seek a repair, a replacement or a refund. If the trader refuses to give you at least one of these three options, it could be considered a breach of consumer law. The information and/or signage traders display regarding their returns policy must not give the impression that a consumer does not have certain consumer rights. If it does so, then it could be considered a breach of consumer law. As a result of this, we will refer your query to our Commercial Practices Division (CPD) for their review. Where cases are referred to CPD, they will follow-up on the issue you have raised. However, I should explain while it is our policy to follow-up on all complaints it is not always possible to respond to every complainant due to the large volume of consumer contacts received by our office. Of course we will contact you if the need arises either in the course of or on completion of our enquiries.

Looks like they listened to you. I wonder how sincere they are though.

Sorry about that. We'll try to get you a working replacement (if there are any left). Failing that, we'll offer you a full credit to spend on an even better deal!.
