    Hey all,

Anyone have any experience doing a course with these people:

    http://www.littonlanetraining.com/index.asp

I know the NCEF cert is more recognised in Ireland but I hear the ITEC cert (the international one - not the crappy online study one!) is also a good cert to have.

My main problem with the NCEF is the stoopid Exercise to Music Module (and its also more expensive - 2k compared to 1.6k for ITEC).

    Thoughts?

    Hi

I'm starting that course this month. You have a choice to do Gym Instructor on its own or else you can add on Studio Instructor and Personal Trainer modules. I take it you don't want to teach aerobic classes so I guess you wouldn't be going for the Studio Instructor part of it which would have the exercising to music.

    Hey tough_cookie,

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I plan on adding in the Personal Trainer module.

    What are you doing?

The NCEF is recognised internationally as far as I know.

Yeah with the European framework been set in place - it will be more recognized abroad but you might still have difficulty getting work in some gyms in UK with it.

Can't comment on Litton Lane - no experience of it.

    Silverwex, tough_cookie.

I done the littonlane (ITEC) course, 3 years ago, although i see they have added parts onto the course since i done it(FETAC Sports and Recreation Level 5 option etc)
so any questions you have about the modules involved or the specific strands etc ask away
Only think i cant answer is regarding the Exercise to music exam( i never actually took the exam due to injury,i done all the course work for the class however)

    Thanks hammar.

    1) Is it as easy to get a gym job with ITEC as it is with NCEF?
    2) Would you recommend the course?
    3) Did you do the Personal Trainer add on module, if so, was it worth it?
    4) Are you working at the moment (due to having an ITEC Cert)?

    Thanks!

    1. Im country(Cavan based),so it wasnt easy for me,A few of my classmates around Dublin got jobs straight away in gyms they worked out in previously to studying for the ITEC Diploma,
    i handed in about 8-10 CV's before i got part-time work,which is what i was looking for.

The NCEF in my opinion,is more detailed than the ITEC course, with its 2 stages, and detailed Personal Trainer/Tutor Education modules.
Allied with starting in 2011/2012 a Level 8 Honours degree add on
    http://www.ncefinfo.com/degree_options.html
I would advise you to do the NCEF.

    2. I liked the course, and it gives you all the basic knowledge you will need to work in a gym setting.
I learned alot from it,but ive learned even more since from reading online.
Id recommend Littonlane Training(ITEC),but the NCEF is reckoned to be more detailed and better recognised.

3.I done the Personal Trainer add on yes,
It was two weekends in January(i done October-February course)
Sat/Sunday 10-5(taken by Personal Trainers who are the examiners for your test)
Followed by the Practical exam in February at the end of your exams.
The Practical examination is the form of you training a new client(your classmate),It goes through the whole process of a session such as Screening/Stretching/Exercise demonstration/technique/Basic nutrition advice etc.
The Examiners, were two well known Dublin PT's and they didnt pull any punches,if you didnt know what you were doing and hadnt put in the work, you failed, which 4/5 of my classmates did(because they didnt bother doing the work).
It was enjoyable, but if you wanted to do Personal Training as a full time job, you would need more experience and more courses in my opinion.

4.Working part time 10-12 hours per week in a Gym,making just over 10 Euro an hour.
Im also a part time student(Year 3 out of a 4 year Business Managment degree),so it suits me. I wouldnt be optimistic in the current climate however if i were looking for full time hours.

If you decide to do the course and have any further questions regarding the different modules, dont hesitate to ask.

    Good luck with it.

Actually, hammar, what books do they use for this course? Like, are they available to buy in shops? Would love to get my hands on them and start studying asap!

If theyre not available in bookshops, can you tell me what areas are covered in the course so I can read up on them...

I know a good bit about fitness and weight training as it is but would love to learn more.

    Thanks

Erhm,i gave away some of my books,so i dont know the names of them.
    Subjects are

Special Populations(You learn the do's and do nots with special sections of the population like such as Obesity,Diabetes, high blood pressure,Osteoporosis, pregnancy) etc
There is also some nutrition covered in this section.
This is all class based,no book involved just notes

    Anatomy and Physiology
(You cover the muscular, lymphatic system, and a few others,it shouldnt be too hard to get a book which covers all this) Again, this is all class based.

    Business Studies
(This subject deals with, Business in the Leisure sector, from safety concerns to HR and dealing with customers.
    Class Based

    Circuit Training
Practical class, whereby you are thought how to construct and instruct a proper Circuit Training class(you dont have this class every week)

    Step Aerobics
Practical class, with some work in the classroom, designing step routines, and then being able to teach it.(you have this about every 2nd week)

    Gym Instruction,(2 hour class)
    Both practical and classroom based,
You learn the basic machine and free weight exercises here, programme design,measurements/client screening etc.
You have this class virtually every week at least once.

    Exercise to Music(2 hour class)
Both Practical and Theory, you will learn off all the movement, put together a beginners/intermediate and advanced routine, and be able to teach them for your exam.

    Personal Training(2 weekends)

Spin Cycling(1 day,get ready to take part in 3 spinning classes ,a bit of theory involved)

    First Aid(over 1 weekend,Friday Night,Saturday and Sunday)
Then test is the Saturday after.

I've done the ITEC course and finished in March, still not got my results but I've been told that the spinning and personal training are certs of attendance, this is a joke considering how much the course cost.
