Too many images in Desktop Background List

I change my desktop background every month and today while changing it again, I noticed that every file I'd scanned, looked at, or clicked on in the last month has now become part of the list of background images I can choose from. There are close to 1,000 there. Is there a way to get rid of them and just go back to the basic list WinXP give?

I've tried everything on this site and it didn't help - http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Background-from-the-Desktop-Background-List

The bit at the end of Tips about BMP or JPEG is mine. My files are all JPEG!

Would really appreciate any help please :)
