I'm not sure if there’s been a thread on this before, but I think it would be interesting to see what equipment we all use to mix and create music.

Equipment: pair of Pioneer 800mk2 and a Numark dmx 06 two channel mixer.
Location: Spare room in my house.

I cured myself of gearlust last year and have completely stripped my studio setup down to pretty much nothing.

MBP and a 20" apple cinema display
    Maschine
Event 2020 monitors (lol), occasionally have to use my genelc 8030's
NI Audio DJ 2 (lol as I had an apogee duet before it!)
Akai LPK 25 (not the most heterosexual looking midi keyboard)
M-Audio Axiom 25 (the worst purchase I ever made. Overpriced piece of sh1t)
Evolution UC33e (hasn't seen use in months)
UAD Xpander (trying to get rid of this as I don't use it enough)
    2 x 1210's
Vestax vc002xl (lol but 100 europes is 100 europes)
A worryingly increasing vinyl collection (and of course the maxed credit card to go with it)
    HD-25's
Delonghi espresso maker (best present I ever got)

yeah along those lines. Go to tesco and get the LaVazza black stuff. Make sure you tamp the hell out of it before you shtick it in. There is a knack to getting the espresso right but it's worth practicing, seriously. Loads of youtube videos and stuff out there. Great fun.
If you don't get everything right with those makers, the coffee that comes out is proper gank.
But if you do it right, you can literally get perfect coffee (better than 99% of coffee shop coffee) out of them.

Right, I am likely to be able to budget about 1200 quid later in November towards upgrading my setup and need suggestions as to what I do. Grimey helped me a huge amount in a long digital discussion before but I think I would like to add both a CDJ and also a digital solution - or should I look at one that combines both? I want to keep my 1210s and add to that setup - I've been mostly buying CDs for a long time now and it makes sense that I do something that allows me mix them! Help me. :pac:

The digital solution should be cheap as chips to be honest, most controllers come with a version of a digital mixing program these days, so happy days on that front, and no real need to spend big bucks on a digital controller either.

Personally I use the Launchpad, have gigged it very happily for the last year or so. Oddly enough, i'm currently angling for a pair of 1210's. Funny old world!

If you have the money, the best set-up, not just for bedroom DJs, but what a lot of big DJs, are using these days is:

    Traktor Scratch
    Two Technics
    and
    Two Kontrol X1s

Ideal set-up in my opinion. You keep the vinyl, hands on feel, use vinyl for all your basic mixing, use the second X1 for a second 2 decks, and use the main X1 for controlling looping/hotcues/effects which you can't do on just turntables. My main draw to Traktor is the effects, as they're so much better than any effects on any mixer.

Expensive though, €500 or so for Scratch, and €400 for the two controllers. I'm currently saving up for the upgrade from Pro to Scratch, and then this'll be my set-up. I'm currently neglecting my X1s because I don't like beatmatching/cueing and doing my main mixing on little buttons, so Scratch will solve all of that.

It also leaves you with the option of the mobile set-up for parties etc: laptop, one X1 to control 2 decks, and one X1 mapped as a mixer (or just bring your hardware mixer).

Cheers, yeah I was thinking about Scratch alright - what puts me off though is the need to interact with a computer! What I like about going the CDJ route is that I can just add to my existing setup - i.e. connect 2 x CDJs into the available channels on my mixer and off I go. I really can't see me playing tracks very much from a completely digital source - most of my music will be either on vinyl or CD so is there much point in getting something like Scratch?

If you're looking for a digital solution, Scratch is the best option. When you're DJing, you can have your laptop in a different room, you don't need it at all. You beatmatch manually, select tracks with the decks, etc. If you're put off by using mp3s, I'd say stick with CDs/vinyl, whichever you're happier about!

Okay, i can finally post my set up here and not feel bad.

    Digital :
    Laptop
    Launchpad
    Beringer BCR-2000
    Kaossilator
    Korg KP3
    - that all gets used when i am playing full shows of my own ****.

    Decks
    2 x Technics 1200 MK2's
Gemini PS-04 Mixer (getting replaced soon).

    - so i guess pretty soon i'll be walking into a club with a bag of vinyls and dubplates and not worrying about someone spilling beer on my stuff.

I don't know, still wrestling with that one. Although I was never cool to start with so not so much of an issue.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I reckon I'll add a couple of CDJs for now - I rip CDs to FLAC just to play on my MP3 player and on the computer but I really can't see me hooking up the computer etc to play files from it.

Although having commented to my wife about this planned spend, she promptly reminded me of the need to replace our wardrobes... :(

Yeah man, absolutely. Picked em up second hand, had a nice spin on them before parting with the cash. Infairness to the lad i bought them off, he looked after them like they were children, they actually look brand new, not a scratch or a mark on them, everything in great nick, super responsive on the pitch controls.

    Delighted.

I have this production thing called Subversus, up till now our live shows have been me on Ableton and a mate called Welfare on vinyl and occasionally Serato. Quite happy now as we can integrate a lot of solutions when we are playing out as i'll be able to get my decks skills up to where they need to be. Eventually we'll be looking to do a live production meets dubplates thing, should be interesting.

I can't compare as I've never mixed digitally, but there is a real addictive buzz to mixing vinyl.

Sounds like fun to be had ahead anyway, enjoy!

Here is my current bedroom set-up

    2 Stanton ST-150 Turntables
    Shure M44-7 Cartridges

    Pioneer DJM 700
    Stanton Uberstand
    KRK Rokit 5 (A Pair)
    Macbook Pro 2.0Ghz
    Pioneer HDJ 1000

Looking to add a controller soon, something to complement my DVS set up...I'm thinking the Native Instrument's Kontrol X-1 or The Novation Dicers
