    Hi all,

I am on a low carb diet of basically meat, veg and some dairy. I normally use Fitday if Im confused about a food and it hasnt helped me this time. Basically I love Thai food and have been eating it minus the rice/noodles etc. So i go onto Fitday and it tells me that there is nearly 30grams carbs in a Thai Red Curry! Shocked (and very sad) to say the least. Would anyone know if this is correct? is the Coconut Milk that makes it "Carby" and I cant see where else they would come from.

    Thanks

I wonder is it palm sugar?

Well there are carbs in coconut milk, check the tin you use to see how many. The food on fitday is hardly ever the exact same as what you are eating though due to portion sizes, farming practices, personal preferences and other factors being different depending on the country or person. That's why its hard to get an accurate idea of macros from it unless you put in the foods you eat yourself from scratch (custom foods isn't it?).

Are you maing you own thai food or getting it from outside sources. Its deffo not the coconut milk. thats not carby at all. If you make your own - list the ingredients. If its from an outside source - you will never really know unless you ask them.

EDIT: Just saw brians post.the coconut milk i use has next to zero carbs so yeah just check the label. Simples. Other brands could have significantly different values.

Is there any way that fitday is including a small portion of rice in that 30gm? i guess not as then it woudl be higher..does your version have veg, or is it literally chicken with cocunut milk?

If you are LOW carbing as opposed to NO carbing i woudlnt stress too much about it.. youve cut out the rice, that's the main thing.

Im a big subscriber to low carbing, but NO carbing i dont get at all.. especially when it eliminates veg:confused:.. the principles i understand, but it's too severe.. anyway that's OT and not particularly helpful to the original question!

Thanks, yeah its made from scratch using Amoy Paste and fresh ingredients, no sugar added! I also use the full fat Amoy Coconut milk which apparantly has 13.1grams per can. I would probably eat 1/4 of that!

Basically what I suppose I'm asking is a Thai Curry ok when low carbing? (Homemade as I know a load of sugar goes into the restaurant stuff!)

Leah, in short, from what you've said (you still havent said if you add veg?) then i think fitday is incorrect... if it's only 13 grams per can, then i definitely reckon you're ok..

yeah of course it is - dont overthink it. you make it - you know the values and you know how many grams of carbs you want to shoot for since your IPD'ing so it sounds all good.

Good stuff, Thanks ULstudent and Wonkagirl,

I had some cauliflower rice with it and it was'nt so bad!

Least I can still enjoy something....without rice of course :)

Just read the jars you are eating. Many websites have crazy values for estimates.

1/3 of this jar is 6.7g carbs

when making a thai curry use 1/2 coconut milk and 1/2 stock and its not so bad and actually tastier and authentic imho. in resturants they load in the coconut milk and palm sugar, too rich and loaded with calories imho.

    Slightly related!

    Kanum Thai now have low carb options listed on their menus;

    http://www.kanum.ie/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/A2-kanum-thai.pdf

I have been low carbing for a few months now and had been having their stir fries & green curries on occasion (minus the rice/noodles of course).

On their new menu they don't list their curries as lc options and they have a sweet chilli chicken down that I would be sceptical about it being low carb.

Thanks so much! I love Kanum...its literally my favorite lunch place..you've made my day :D

I love Kanum too, and go at least once a week for lunch.

I either have the Larp Gai (which is just chicken and mint, shallots etc in lettuce) or the Chicken noodle soup, EXCEPT i ask for extra veg INSTEAD of the noodles.. fat free and pretty lo carb. you coudl get extra chicken instead of extra veg if you were very concerned about the carbs.

Kanum rocks. You can substitute carbs for extra meat/veg with all of their dishes. And they are so sound in there too!

I'm low carbing too and had been avoiding thai food because I thought coconut milk was very carby and given that you're not meant to have ordinart milk I thought it was a definite no-no. Which brand do you use for zero carbs ULStudent if you don't mind me asking?

Also- where is this Kanum place?? It sounds great and I never heard of it!
