    Solpadine's.
Having to go through the motions with the a pharmacist when you're looking for your Solpadine's to relieve the hangover you got from the night before.
Seems different rules depending on which chemist you go too - as a rule they shouldn't give them to you for just a hangover, and I was refused the other week when I was honest about what I wanted them for.

Chemist on Lower Baggot St gave them over wheb I said I had a splitting headache and then yesterday I went into a chemist on Upper Baggot St that wouldn't sell them to me when I explained I needed them for a bursting headache!!!

Only a matter of time before these yokes end up on the blackmarket.
    Scheech....

    I love this country. :D

Do you know have a kind of "local" chemist you go to?

Kind of the same with a local off licence or pub I'd imagine, even if you look about 15 years old when you're shaved you'd still get served if they know you.

It's ridiculous. If painkillers with Codeine are that much of an abuse issue in this country they should be made prescription only and not left at the mercy of a jumped up little pharmacy salesperson in Boots.

No. But they would probably f*ck you up the arse & scream, "pain... you don't know the meaning of pain, piggy boy".

Clearly the solution to this is to get the pub or off licence to strictly moderate your alcohol intake as well !

My local chemist never asks what I need them for when I come in unshaven and stinking of stale Guinness. Probably calls Joe Duffy straightaway when I buy johnnies though.

That seems like the most logical solution alright.
Anybody else tried to buy them recently??

    Pure stupidity.

Most of these pills are fine in the doses taken, if you deliberately exceed the recommended dosage you're an idiot, if you exceed the dosage because you didn't read the directions you're also an idiot, no argument against it.

If a person wants to cause harm to themselves they're going to do it a lot better than with a pack of paracetamols. One of the first forms of suicide, paracetamol overdosing. Making it harder to purchase them wont stop it, people will just find other way.

Ah sure people were gettin hooked on the things, my friend takes them all the time cuz she gets a headache if she doesn't. She sorces hers up the north now. They sell her boxes and boxes at a time. Strategy for the nxt budget me thinks. The gov will lop a whapping great tax on the stuff then make it accessable again. Watch the hoards flock in to get their fix. National debt sorted :D:D

Yeah I got nurofen plus today with no problems. I didn't ask for them though, I told her what was wrong with me and she suggested them.

I wonder would most chemists refuse to sell solpadeine/nurofen plus if you said it was for a hangover.

Codeine is a great hangover cure.

That's great, she's really solving the problem isn't she? Shoving more solpadeine into her.

I'd never recommend Nurofen Plus for a hangover, regulations or not. A lot of people tend to have dodgy stomachs with a hangover and the ibuprofen could make things a lot worse. Of course, a lot of ignorant people seem to think it must be the 'best' thing to take just because it happens to be very effective for a completely different complaint.

I had a terrible experience over the weekend when attempting to buy 24 solpadeine, during which time I felt that I was an Apprentice contestant trying in vain to convince Alan Sugar (Bill Cullen would have been a walk in the park) why he should't fire me.

I had heard that people were having a bit of hassle getting them, so I had my symptoms on the tip of my tonge: headache, muscle & joint pain, feeling like i was coming down with something.

I felt like a criminal when the counter assistant had finished her 5 minute public interrogation & finally reached for my fix my item.

What annoyed me more was that she didn't say as much as thank-you after I had paid for them, making me feel as if she had done me a massive favour, or had just handed me a kilo of heroin for free.

OK, codeine can be addictive, but so can alcohol. Hopefully the barmen don't start or we'll all be brewing our own.

I love how everyone here is so 'knowledgeable' about all the painkillers on the market and want to able to decide for themselves what they can take. If you do happen to be well informed, that's great, you should be taking the correct medication for your complaint. However most people seem to be forgetting/ignoring the HUGE chunk of the population who haven't a clue about the painkillers on the market and how and when to use them safely.

The 'lecture' is not an attempt to belittle you, or give out to you. It's to educate people on dealing with their pain. In fact, if you stop referring to it as a 'lecture' and think of the benefits these conversations between pharmacists and customers are providing, you might appreciate it more. So the hell what if it takes an extra 60 seconds to ask you a few questions? It's to benefit the majority of customers who don't know how to manage their pain correctly. The answer is not always popping pills at every chance available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

It isn't just a passive lecture, people are being refused them after this 'sensible lecture'.

We get ours up north, it doesn't seem to be a problem for the chemist there to just plop them into a paper bag.

What's the agenda, is it really just about the codeine? I doubt it.

Agree with Alicat. I sometimes take solpadeine etc for a hangover but tbh, it's just the lazy way out. Your hangover headache is just dehydration and drinking a couple litres of water will have you sorted. Pre-empting the hangover by drinking water before bed works wonders.

Its a hangover! The last think I want is effort so the lazy always wins!
And id rather stick with the lazy way since I know it works and its not like its gonna make me sh!t through my eyeballs or somethin.

Hmm, sure. As I said, I use'm too when I'm lazy. Still, the body builds up a natural immunity to these kinds of drugs and continued usage diminishes the effectiveness, meaning eventually you need to take more and more for them to actually work effectively.

Still, I would like to someday respond to the question by saying "Just in the mood for a bita Codeine, love! ;)"

Edit: I've also found lately that, on arrival home, 2 pints of water and a protein shake has pre-empted ALL signs of hangover the next morning. For this reason, I haven't needed to buy solpadeine in months and, thus, haven't yet been posed this line of questioning! Hangover prevention tip for the day. :)

Obviously I can't speak for every pharmacy but they are probably being refused for good reason, even if you don't recognise it.

The amount of people who happily proclaim "Ah sure I only take two a day!" and think that that is ok, is incomprehensible to anyone who does not work in pharmacy or has a connection to it in some fashion. Or people who will only take soluble solpadeine, and will refuse the capules. Most of them are only after the hit from the soluble version.

Being lazy about it does not make it alright, hangover or not.

Or why not sell them as they sell cigs? Have an age limit on them or something? And give adults the benefit of the doubt when they ask for them.
    Plink plink Fisszchhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......

Seriously The pharmasist's are coming across as doormen that would refuse me entry to a club/pub when I was younger.... All that power to ruin your day/night.

But here - would a protein shake work wonders before you went to bed?? Because I'd try anything now to avoid going to a chemist.

You don't need to try anything... the pain and cramps you get when you are "hungover" is because you are dehydrated... just drink some water over an hour and a half or so...

I find it a slight invasion of privacy when they ask you, and you're made to explain your 'female' problems to the sales staff, trying to be as discreet as possible (since there's about 10 people in the shop who really don't need to know), and then the silly sales bint goes shouting to the pharmacist across the room 'are neurofens ok for period pain and cramps'?

    Not very nice.

I now make my husband go get those for me...

I am just saying that being a check out girl in a pharmacy does not necessarily make you a pharmacist.
I understand that a lot of people are annoyed at being "talked down to" by girls who sell makeup etc.
I mean, they might know their own bodies, and what pills work for them better than anybody. I can see why they get annoyed.

If I need medication I just phone my doctor, he comes to my house and gives me whatever medication I need there and then. No biggie. In fact, if I needed coedine, he would be handing out 40mg coedine as standard. Its amazing how people can apparently get addicted to 5mg or 12mg coedine tablets, that is weak weak stuff and policing it is a joke.

It gives a buzz, creates withdrawal symptoms reliant on further use to relieve short term and has dangerous medical problems after long term use. So yeah, its weak stuff.

    Yes its weak. But it comes with large amounts of either Ibuprofen or Paracetamol. Which can in large doses;

    a) **** up your stomach lining
    b) **** up your liver

People who gain an addiction to this medication will over time take more and more to gain the hit. Whilst ignoring the ****loads of damage they are doing to themselves by overdosing on the other ingredients.

    Fairly serious forethought fail there.
