Solpadine's.
Having to go through the motions with the a pharmacist when you're looking for your Solpadine's to relieve the hangover you got from the night before.
Seems different rules depending on which chemist you go too - as a rule they shouldn't give them to you for just a hangover, and I was refused the other week when I was honest about what I wanted them for.

Chemist on Lower Baggot St gave them over wheb I said I had a splitting headache and then yesterday I went into a chemist on Upper Baggot St that wouldn't sell them to me when I explained I needed them for a bursting headache!!!

Only a matter of time before these yokes end up on the blackmarket.

Do you know have a kind of "local" chemist you go to?

Kind of the same with a local off licence or pub I'd imagine, even if you look about 15 years old when you're shaved you'd still get served if they know you.

It's ridiculous. If painkillers with Codeine are that much of an abuse issue in this country they should be made prescription only and not left at the mercy of a jumped up little pharmacy salesperson in Boots.

Pure stupidity.

Most of these pills are fine in the doses taken, if you deliberately exceed the recommended dosage you're an idiot, if you exceed the dosage because you didn't read the directions you're also an idiot, no argument against it.

If a person wants to cause harm to themselves they're going to do it a lot better than with a pack of paracetamols. One of the first forms of suicide, paracetamol overdosing. Making it harder to purchase them wont stop it, people will just find other way.

Codeine is a great hangover cure.

I'd never recommend Nurofen Plus for a hangover, regulations or not. A lot of people tend to have dodgy stomachs with a hangover and the ibuprofen could make things a lot worse. Of course, a lot of ignorant people seem to think it must be the 'best' thing to take just because it happens to be very effective for a completely different complaint.

I had a terrible experience over the weekend when attempting to buy 24 solpadeine, during which time I felt that I was an Apprentice contestant trying in vain to convince Alan Sugar (Bill Cullen would have been a walk in the park) why he should't fire me.

I had heard that people were having a bit of hassle getting them, so I had my symptoms on the tip of my tonge: headache, muscle & joint pain, feeling like i was coming down with something.

I felt like a criminal when the counter assistant had finished her 5 minute public interrogation & finally reached for my fix my item.

What annoyed me more was that she didn't say as much as thank-you after I had paid for them, making me feel as if she had done me a massive favour, or had just handed me a kilo of heroin for free.

OK, codeine can be addictive, but so can alcohol. Hopefully the barmen don't start or we'll all be brewing our own.

I love how everyone here is so 'knowledgeable' about all the painkillers on the market and want to able to decide for themselves what they can take. If you do happen to be well informed, that's great, you should be taking the correct medication for your complaint. However most people seem to be forgetting/ignoring the HUGE chunk of the population who haven't a clue about the painkillers on the market and how and when to use them safely.

The 'lecture' is not an attempt to belittle you, or give out to you. It's to educate people on dealing with their pain. In fact, if you stop referring to it as a 'lecture' and think of the benefits these conversations between pharmacists and customers are providing, you might appreciate it more. So the hell what if it takes an extra 60 seconds to ask you a few questions? It's to benefit the majority of customers who don't know how to manage their pain correctly. The answer is not always popping pills at every chance available.

We get ours up north, it doesn't seem to be a problem for the chemist there to just plop them into a paper bag.

What's the agenda, is it really just about the codeine? I doubt it.

Agree with Alicat. I sometimes take solpadeine etc for a hangover but tbh, it's just the lazy way out. Your hangover headache is just dehydration and drinking a couple litres of water will have you sorted. Pre-empting the hangover by drinking water before bed works wonders.

Hmm, sure. As I said, I use'm too when I'm lazy. Still, the body builds up a natural immunity to these kinds of drugs and continued usage diminishes the effectiveness, meaning eventually you need to take more and more for them to actually work effectively.


Still, I would like to someday respond to the question by saying "Just in the mood for a bita Codeine, love! "


Edit: I've also found lately that, on arrival home, 2 pints of water and a protein shake has pre-empted ALL signs of hangover the next morning. For this reason, I haven't needed to buy solpadeine in months and, thus, haven't yet been posed this line of questioning! Hangover prevention tip for the day.

The amount of people who happily proclaim "Ah sure I only take two a day!" and think that that is ok, is incomprehensible to anyone who does not work in pharmacy or has a connection to it in some fashion. Or people who will only take soluble solpadeine, and will refuse the capules. Most of them are only after the hit from the soluble version.

If I need medication I just phone my doctor, he comes to my house and gives me whatever medication I need there and then. No biggie. In fact, if I needed coedine, he would be handing out 40mg coedine as standard. Its amazing how people can apparently get addicted to 5mg or 12mg coedine tablets, that is weak weak stuff and policing it is a joke.

It gives a buzz, creates withdrawal symptoms reliant on further use to relieve short term and has dangerous medical problems after long term use. So yeah, its weak stuff.

Yes its weak. But it comes with large amounts of either Ibuprofen or Paracetamol. Which can in large doses;

a) **** up your stomach lining
b) **** up your liver

People who gain an addiction to this medication will over time take more and more to gain the hit. Whilst ignoring the ****loads of damage they are doing to themselves by overdosing on the other ingredients.

Fairly serious forethought fail there.
