Right, October has Halloween in it so thought maybe we could do a horrorthon. Pick any horror game and play it during October and post you feelings about it. If you can try and get through as many horror games as possible (I'll be surprised if I make it through 1). My game is Forbidden Siren which I started recently.

I decided to give Resident Evil 5 another try and started it again a few nights ago. Really enjoying it this time.

Although, not retro in the slightest.

    Hmmm.

Well, I still haven't played Silent Hill 2. Better get cracking at that so ;)

Well it doesn't have to be retro really, it's just a bit of fun.

:O That and System Shock 2 NEED to be played by everyone!

Played that game through in one drunken evening on co-op and it sucked so hard I nearly cried.:(
The whole trying to walk through treacle mechanic irked me to no end.

Mmmh wonder if Castlevania would be considered horror?

It isnt retro, that scary or even good but I gotta actually try playing condemned 2 again.
Damn game gives me the willies.I spend ages beating every single enemy just to make sure theyre dead :o

I played a few hours of System Shock 2 years back. I think I stopped as I found it frustratingly hard. From what I remember It was like old Resident Evil weapon hoarding, but a million times worse.

When I was playing that my PC was hooked up to a surround sound system with loads of satellite speakers around a box room. Scary is too tame a word! Really really creepy stuff.

The thing about System Shock 2 is that you can't use all the weapons inthe game, you've got to let some of them go. also if you find maintaining the weapons too tough (they break stupidly easily) you can install a mod that improves it. Well worth playing and finishing though, one of the best games I've ever played.

I'll try work my way through Silent Hill 1 and the Resi remake on the cube.

Yeah, it's meant to be one of the creepier games around. I have the original for the Xbox, but have only given it a few gos. The atmosphere seems great, but like (whisper it) Silent Hill the survival horror mechanics start to annoy me!

It's good but the second one improved it I think. Also the first one is more rare on pal. I don't think it ever got an official Irish pal release.

I am currently playing obscure 1 and 2, not the best survival horror games, but ok.

Clive Barker's Undying is one of my favourites. Call of Cthulhu - Dark corners of the earth is pretty good too, if a little frustrating at times and fairly buggy.

I've heard that as well but instead of the second one being an improvement the second one is up there with Silent Hill 2 as one of the best games ever made.

I bought here it years ago new & retail so it must have. Does that mean it's worth millions? :pac:

Yeah I bought mine as a PAL game in Ireland as well and there was plenty of copies?

Only game I know of that got a limited European release was Rule of Rose which didnt get released in UK, Ireland and a few other countries, should have picked up a copy when I seen it in one of the irish shops second hand. Going for a bit on ebay now.

Wasn't it banned/taken off the shelves in most of Europe because of the violence and sexuality towards children in it? Must try pick up a copy before it gets too expensive. Although there's quite a few Belgian and Italian copies for sale on ebay at the moment.

Strangely enough i just started playing F.E.A.R on the pc again.Has a few moments in it where you jump .A good FPS too.

I was trying to pick up a PAL Rule of Rose about a month ago on ebay. It's a very hard game to find for a good price.

Cheapest place that has them is Italy. But the auctions say '100 % in italiano'. I thought all the PAL region discs would have multiple languages but I'm not sure now.

/edit - I think the Italian just means the box/manual.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Looked on ebay for it, PAL copy looking at 80 blips to take it home, before postage!
Feck, it'd want to be super good for that money lads and lassies!

I see it on ebay.fr for less, asking about postage now, might buy it.

You could take a chance on it and if it is in Italian sell it on for what you payed for it. That or buy an Italian dictionary :D

Yeah I seen that listing. €80? No thanks. I could buy much more with that.

Just be careful with foreign auctions! I nearly bought just a gameboy game manual thinking it was the actual game :o

    Here's the cheap Italian one.

    http://global.ebay.com/RULE_of_ROSE_pal_ps_2_100_in_italiano/260670954224/item

The bottom of the auction says it's in English though.

'presenti anche dialoghi testo in inglese, francese, spagnolo e tedesco!!'

It's not meant to be that good of a game. From what I've heard the story is really interesting, but it's held back by some mediocre gameplay.

Ah, questa è una grande notizia!

Anyone played it before? Is it worth about €40?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,394 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm pretty sure the italian copy would be in English but then again the company that brought it to europe was Italian so might have had a special italian version.

As for the game itself I hear it'sa bit weird. Basically if they got rid of the combat and made it an adventure game it would have been a very good game. As it stands the story is supposedly excellent while the gameplay is terrible.

Perhaps I could try a Jack Burton on a Buy it Now or nearest offer.

A underrated gem of a horror game for october is sweet home on the nes. Strictly speaking a rpg with horror elements it can still be called a horror game. Also it's from Capcom and in some ways is a prototype Resident Evil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Think I'll have a blast of House of the Dead 2 and play through a resi game again. Maybe Code Veronica, my Dreamcast is sadly neglected these days. Although I may just pick up Silent Hill 2, I hated the first one so I never gave it a chance. Seems I'm missing out.

Oh and Project Zero is the scariest anything (film, game, book) ever. The feeling of being so vulnerable with just a camera is terrifying. Games tend to get to me more though as horror goes, since you can actually die, as opposed to the heroes in other media.

I picked up extermination and Ghost Hunter for ps2 recently, if I get a chance I'll play a little of them too.

    Also, great idea Retr0 :D

You...hated Silent Hill? Did you play it when it came out? Or was it a few years later? I bought it the day it was released going on reviews. One of the greatest gaming experiences I've had. Scared the **** out of me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Think it had been out a few months, I borrowed it from someone who really loved it too, maybe it was just overhyped by the time I got to it. Or maybe I was really really scared and just repressed the horror into the darkest recesses of my psyche?

Ok... Instead of Resi I'll try either Silent Hill 1 or 2 this month. I feel like an outcast for not liking it :p

How the **** did you get it for 25 euro you jammy swine?

Eh... the gameplay really does suck. Hard. But maybe you'll enjoy the story.

Scariest moment in a game ever doesn't even come from a horror game for me. Operation Flashpoint, Mission 3. Your sqaud is dead, your lost in the woods and have to trek about 10-20 km to get to the extraction point. The forest is crawling with enemy troops. There's tanks patrolling outside the woods and a Lynx Attack helicopter hunting you down over head. Running from copse to copse with no cover whatso ever was nerve wracking considering you have one save for the entire mission and you can die in one shot.

Well, if it's that tyoe of scary moment, then we are onto the likes of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon rising for me too, with a FPS sensibility I used up most of the ammo, the Chinese are breathing down my neck and I'm holed up in a farmhouse as well, death was inevitable but I made those feckers pay!

I found Eternal Darkness brilliantly scary, but Silent Hill 2 was the one, the one that really shook me, when Pyramid Head arrives and all hell breaks loose, literally!

God don't mention that PoS. I knew that they had gotten that game all wrong when they demoed it with exploding red barrels.

Well if we're doing that, my scariest combat moment was when my team were pinned down by a guy with a m429 machine gun on top of a watch tower. There was a look of absolute glee while he mowed everyone down. Absolutely no way passed him. Thing was spewing shots everywhere.

I crawled through I don't know how many gorse bushes until I came up on his flank. Silly bugger had left his right side completely exposed, hadn't a clue I was there.

He was at a pretty far range. I could see his upper torso and head sticking up out of the tower. My heart was pounding like you wouldn't believe. Shaking with the adrenaline.

I lined him up in my sight. Was using a Famas at the time which has an amazing rate of fire but not the longest range.

My shots connected and he let out a squeal.

That was my first kill at an airsoft skirmish back in 06 at Predator in Norther Ireland. It was one of those 'this is the coolest thing in the world, ever..b.but I'm close to pissing myself in terror!' instances. :pac:

I saw it in Santry Gamestop today for around a fiver.
    It's a keeper!

I have the first four of the series, 1 on the PS1 and 3 in a trilogy pack on the PS2, never played the first one, might fire it up and prepare for some pants soiling!

1 is nowhere near as good as 2 but it's still the second best in the series and great. There's a nasty piano puzzle that you will get stuck on that involves solving a riddle. I solved it but still managed to get it wrong because it was mirrored. Just gamefaqs it!

I recently borrowed a copy of Silent Hill 2 from a friend who has moved away to a foreign land called Hol Land (I don't know it either). Perhaps I shall give it another go - never got further than halfway through.
