the big question - will it be broadcast in 16:9 or 4:3 (like all of the others)?

seeing as RTE went widescreen around 2000 I'd say it'll be 16:9.

this actually matters if you you want to record it as the Sky box needs to be set up correctly.

brilliant - hope it is as good as the rest

One of the reasons the original series were so good is that they were made 25+ years after the year in question. So with the benefit of hindsight they were able to pick the most relevant stuff from that year, stuff which may not have looked relevant at the time.

So doing 1967 or whatever 20 years later they could for example show a leading politician making his debut in the dail as a freshfaced kid etc.

I'm not making a great case here - I think what I'm trying to say is imo its about a decade too soon to be doing 2006/07/08/09.

It also means they won't have good perspective of how some of the decisions made in those years turn out. NAMA, guarantees etc. It's too soon to be covering them in my opinion.

considering the 1990's was first broadcast in 2000 (according to wikipedia could be bs)

Great, looking forward to Sunday. I always wanted to get the DVDs of the 60s-90s but I think they are not the full episodes. Anyone have the dvd? Is this true?

Thats true, the 90s was broadcast early in 2000/01. And again I think it caused the late 90s episodes to be not as good as the 60s,70s,80s episodes. Its all relative though and its still an excellent program obviously. I just think leaving it a few more years to get (as someone else said) perspective might have been a great idea.

I got the Reeling In 80s DVD for my ex-pat sister who emigrated in the last 80s, and its 150 minutes long, whereas 10x25 min episodes should be 250 minutes long.
So there is a lot missing, apparently RTE only had the TV rights for some of the (mostly foreign) clips, getting the video rights also would have been too expensive.

    They're "available" online ;)

I have the "real" Reeling In The Years which are just recorded off RTE as the DVDs are inferior, it's probably the best thing they have ever produced. It's so damn watchable.

Will be looking forward to seeing these actually.

I kinda like the way that along with the big news stories it features stories and music that were big at the time, but have been generally forgotten.

There was an interview with the producer of Reeling in the Years in ,last week's Irish Times Magazine:

    interview with John O'Regan

I found it very interesting. Really looking forward to the new episodes!

I'm sure you all know, but...it's on tonight!! Just under five hours to go!

Thank goodness they're titling it as "the 2000s". I guess they can back that up by pointing out that the Nineties were "the 1990s" and so on.

Any computer literate being with an internet connection can predict the events chosen for inclusion in each episode. What I'm more curious about is the songs they'll chose to include. Fair enough, there's a good deal of predictability there too as they're clearly going to use high-charting songs. But remember: they must suit the suject/tone of each piece of footage.

Bet "Life is a Rollercoaster" comes up tonight. (And probably right at the start.)

Does anybody know if you'll be able to stream the programme live on rte.ie? I've no TV this evening and it probably won't be put on RTE Player for copyright reasons.

It's a poor year to start with in fairness, other years are far more eventful.

I don't like seeing the 9/11 footage tbph.

Original BB theme was a tune and a half.

If they left out the GAA bits and Northern Ireland, this programme would be perfect.

I missed the start tonight, was there a genocide on yet? Usually I can guess the year from which bit of massive human suffering they feature.

    Al gore wins

    George Bush wins

    Al Gore wins

No wait George Bush actually won:)

No soccer though, I mean Euro 2000 was on that year and also that was the year we we started our successful qualification for the World Cup going 2-0 up on Holland and ending up drawing 2-2 which was still a cracking result

    aaahhh nostalgia

That was a class episode of Reeling in the Years. I was disappointed that the soundtrack didnt feature "Maniac 2000" by Mark McCabe [Ireland's biggest selling single of 2000] or "Who's in the House?" by Fr Brian (aka Brendan O'Connor)

I was a bit underwhelmed with the music. Was hoping to hear a tune from a one hit wonder that makes me think "ah, that takes me back", if that makes sense.

RTÉ haven't used much dance music in the other series of Reeling in the Years (inaccessible to some viewers, I guess), so I think they'll continue that trend. As for "Who's in the House"...I guess they didn't make room for any big religious event. And perhaps some people might've found it offensive? (Even people seemed fine with it at the time.)

I was quite surprised that I didn't recognise two of the songs. Can't remember for sure what bits they were at though...maybe Abbeylara for the first one (while his sister was speaking).

Glad they did include at least one dance track (BB theme), as 2000 was a good year for dance IMO.

Oh, gooosh, not "Dancing in the Moonlight"... I had a love/hate relationship with that song.

And, as expected, blimmin' Ronan Keating's "Life is a Rollercoaster" right after the opening credits!!

    Oh, RTÉ...you're so predictable. :pac:

Yea same here...some of the songs I never even heard or certainly were not familiar which was dissapointing. 2000 was a year of big pop and dance tunes I seem to remember.

I thought they covered of the year's news events excellently and comprehensively. They picked up on the economic growing pains and all of the little Irish stories that you would have forgotten about in the meantime. 2000 was a bit of a slow news year overall - it will be very interesting to see them cover 2001, which is when the decade really kicked off

Miriam o Callaghan looks better now than she did back then and seeing Henry Shefflin and Eddie Brennan on the Kilkenny team, they were only young fellas back then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭Dessiemc27

Here's me being pedantic, have they changed the font ? or is it that it is now shot in 16:9 format?

They look to have more narrative . Good tho. It is hard to believe that was ten years ago. Agree with an earlier comment about lack of maniac 2000 or who's in the house? They could have linked it to a church scandal...... one of those every year during the 2000's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭STIG83

Yeah wat the hell? No Maniac 2000!!
