You need a basic fitness instruter course to get employed by a gym and to get insured - things like NCEF, NCEHS etc

Then you need to get a cert to teach spin - usually done over a saturday and sunday and costts 2-300e. Reebok do a 1 day one for 150e but its a ****ing joke of a course. Far better getting off going with Schwinn (nautilius institute) or Johnny G spinning qualification as they actaually teach you how to bring the outdoor ride indoors rather than teaching you contra indications on the bike

The next Spinning(R) certification in Dublin is on Dec 4 & 5:
    Info here.

This is your only option for a thorough quality course about Spinning available to you here. You will have a Spinning Master Instructor who will share so much knowledge and really show you what it is to develop a class profile / design. Schwinn aren't set up in Ireland, but they would be another quality qualificaition. Any other Indoor Cycling course offered here is going to leave you lacking and you won't learn or get any understanding about what Spinning is; training on an Indoor Bike by cycling on it (not preforming an aerobics class on it).

Once you do you qualification check out www.indoorcycleinstructor.com a great resource, was at their first conference earlier in October which was pack full of great workshops and rides.

Was over in The Netherlands at the weekend where we had a 6 hour Spin-a-thon with 550 bikes on Sunday (image attached). Was up on stage for the first hour supporting the master instructor / presenter, makes a change from the 21 bikes I'm usually in front of! Still buzzing :)

Hope you get to do the course and enjoy!

yup, it was so good - real grass roots event where everyone got to know one another, attendees and presenters - everyone on the same page about Indoor Cycling it was really refreshing...

even got to ride up beside Jennifer at the Alpe d'Huez conference kick-off ride - was the only Irish person there but hopefully there are some more next year (start saving :))

they put up a lot of the session material, did you get access to it via the member login on the ICI/Pro site?

A whole year away is a long time to get money together. Most def on a 'to do' list. Unless you go over to GB or further beyond, there's limited masterclasses and workshops. Are your place holding any workshops or anything lined up in the future?

The next one's are in Dublin in Sports Co with date set for Nov 27 for Race Day profiles and Heart Rate Training, and then Nov 28 for Star 2 Spinning Instructor assessments... there are a few more over in the UK... links below will list what's on until the end of the year
    Ireland Workshop / Education Dates
    UK Workshop / Education Dates

The next big Spinning event is at IFS in March 2011 over in Blackpool a 3 day Spinning weekend...

If you don't make it to the SPEX Spinning event in Rotterdam, Schwinn ran their Cycling Event marathon ride the same weekend in Zurich so they may do it at the same time next year too, some mates went over for that and had a blast :)

kayaksurfbum, K2NY Academy are running Indoor Cycling instructor courses in Cork if Dublin is too much of a drive :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,027 ✭✭✭flywheel

Spinning also run classes in Cork and other locations outside Dublin during the year, check with the UK & Ireland education helpdesk...

having taken or reviewed the material on other Indoor Cycling certifications available here the Spinning one beats the others hands down with the breath of material covered and resources supplied over the full 2 day intensive workshops, lectures and practicals... plus there are loads of events and continuing educations available to learn more and enhance your skills...

    IMHO there's

    Spinning
    and
    Group Indoor cycling.

Very different especially to those involved in endurance events and those who have a keen interest in this.

Group indoor cycling likes to more often than not embrace things like squatting on a bike (wtf), doing aerobicy arm movements, holding weights and generally barely going through basics like technique and precise bike fit.

Then there's spinning (Mad dog), but i like to think Schwinn (not in Ireland), and i have also heard good things about Kaiser Cycle?? come under spinning. Even though the later two are not under Mad dog Athletics spinning, they are very much rooted in the same principles. Bring the outdoor ride inside.

Iv only ever taken schwinn and sat in on a reebok 1 day course when it was on in one of the places i work and all i coud say when i was in the room for the reebok course was wow. And not in a good way.

90% of people out there who take a spin class are actually in reality taking a GIC class.

    It's all very political!

It all depends on how much time you want to spend teaching this class, your own investment and interest and how educated you want to become about the area. There are a few options out there. It's up to you to decide how much you want to invest and get out of it

I've done schwinn, le mond, reebok and a few other ones over the years. My opinion is that the 'real spinning' people have a superior attitude that their classes don't merit generally. I found the class boring and teaching it boring. Le mond was very similar.
I also hate any upper body movements that reebok does.
Just because a move is not part of schwinns course, does not make it contraindicated!
The best spinners in the country (the international presenters) have taken the best of all and combined them IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

I would agree with your post there. I have taken classes from lemond certified instructors too and it wasn't anything great tbh and it deffo doesn't take a certain cert qualification to make a good instructor. Have you ever tried the lemond bikes? They're something else. Some bikes.

I off course know just because schwinn says something doesn't nessicarily make it so but when it comes to things like squatting down on the bike when cycling, doing bi cep curls when cycling - then iv had enough. Maybe that's part of the cyclist nature in me.

i can see the point that doing a 2 day certification does not make a great instructor... that person has to invest the time to better themselves and educate themselves on-going... i've never found teaching spinning boring; building an effective profile, RPE/HR targets, finding music, mixing tracks, working on cueing, coaching and motivation... that's what makes it such a fantastic class to teach...

having taken many workshops with Master Instructors from Spinning, Schwinn, Keiser, Stage5 Cycling, Cycling Fusion, Indoor Cycling Instructor... my opinion and experience is these 'real spinning' people care about their participants and want to deliver training and coaching to challenge them, rather than a superior attitude it's more frustration at seeing other indoor cycling "instructors" who either don't know any better or think it is exciting to deliver aerobics type workouts on a bike wasting their participants time and potentially causing them acute or chronic injury...
Just because a move is not part of schwinns course, does not make it contraindicated!

most of the respected / international certifications treat indoor cycling as a 'cycling specific' training... using a solid professional fixed gear bike with a weighted flywheel adds another dimension into the mix of what is and what isn't appropriate... if a move isn't appropriate on this type of equipment it is contraindicated no matter what the certification/programme...

any new instructor should be sent the links below to read by Jennifer Sage and told to get her Keep it Real eBook...
    Indoor Cycling Contraindications
    - Part 1
    - Part 2
    - Part 3
