Dark Rye Bread

    I loved this stuff when in Germany and have just discovered it again in Aldi, i'm after throwing out the packaging but i believe per slice the nutritional values were somewhere along the lines of 120cal, 29g Carb, 5/6g protein(not sure on this one) and 6g fibre.

    The ingredients list i'm pretty sure went as follows; Whole Rye Meal, Whole Rye Flour, water, salt, yeast (again, not 100%).

    Just wondering 1) How healthy this stuff is? 2) How good an alternative it is to wholemeal bread? 3) Is it a decent enough brekkie with some cottage cheese on it? (I'd usually have half a slice).

    Would really appreciate any help with this, so thanks in advance.

    Personally, I reckon it's a huge improvement on wheat bread, and tastes better too. It's still pretty high carb, so add a protein and fat source to balance your meal. Cottage cheese is good.

    Thanks Eileen, much appreciated, yeah tbh the taste is the real thing that has me eating it rather than any health benefits. Funnily enough i have it half with butter and half with cottage cheese so maybe i'm covering all bases there?

    Just really wanted to know that rye itself was all right and a good alternative, again, cheers for the response.

    Sorry to resurrect an old thread but i've started to cut wheat and gluten out of my diet completely. The reasons for this are I ate very little amounts of wheat when living away from home but when I came home over the Christmas and ate a lot again I felt like crap! So i've decided it doesn't agree with me and is not going to be ingested again!

    The reason i'm posting in this thread is i'm wondering is rye bread a good alternative for me? I need to start bringing a lunch with me to college and since I don't have access to a microwave I need to bring sandwiches with me.

    I reckon it would be a good alternative if you're not intolerant to gluten, as Eileen says way better than wheat. It would be even more nutritious if you can source decent sour-dough rye. Is the alternative bread company still around?
