Its not about the value of his car. Its the value of whatever he hits.

    Bentley.
    Family.
    Brian Cowen.

I had all those arguments about my sh*tty car when I was starting out as well. Get onto a broker but prepare to use some lube.

In that case tell Aviva to go and sh1te. Even for me they're exepensive so I don't bother with them anymore. Quinn are usually at the races, got a good deal with First Ireland this time round.

at such a young age and with insurance companies using "statistics" to justify their prices - if "he" was a "she" the insurance could be a couple of grand cheaper.

the operation could save you and your child thousands over the years !!! ....

seriously though ... there's supposed to be some european court case about insurance companies and their "statistics" - hopefully it will result in cheaper car insurance for all....I pay about 300ish and I'm 31 with 5yrs NCB

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

Try quinn direct or brittons in donegal..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭TheBunk1

Dont even consider paying that, you'll definitely get it cheaper elsewhere. When I started driving I was paying around 2k, on a provisional. Granted that was about 5 years ago. Paying €382 now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

That's very expensive. Definitely shop around. I started driving last year and the worst quote I got was €5,500 on a 1ltr micra. I shopped around and got it for €2,300 with Axa on the same car and that was when I was 17 on a provisional. Now this year I've got my full license, a years ncb and my insurance came down to €1,400.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭furtzy

£1700 TPFT (punts) for me in the early 90's....that was a shed load of cash back then. So its not a new thing. Unfortunately we all have to start somewhere and it should drop considerably as youhopefully build up your NCB. As the other posters say they are not concerned about your carper say its the possible personal injuries that they are covering

Did you put yourself as a named driver under his car? This would bring it down considerably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,437 ✭✭✭kasper

why does he need comprehensive insurance on a basic starlet ?

That's mad money, you could spend 140 a week on taxis and be better off (no tax to worry about, fuel costs, running costs). Is that for a car in his own name? I started off as a named driver on my father's car and policy (but I waited until I was 19) and didn't buy my own car until my mid 20's (cars were more expensive relative to earnings back in the early 90's).

Does this 17 y/o really need the car now? Are you based in a rural area?

The statistics do suggest that young males do cost insurance companies more, but that does tar everyone with the one brush. If more companies adopted "Ignition" style training programs like Aviva, you might see rates coming down. I'd like to see younger drivers being given a chance to prove they're not a danger on the roads - charge them a modest premium (relative to the crazy amounts being charged now) at first, but if you have a prang in the first few years (and you're determined to be at fault), *then* you pay the big bucks. That way, the safe drivers will continue to pay acceptable premiums, and those who've had claims will pay more).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭axer

IIRC the statistics suggest a young male is 3 times more likely to be involved in an accident but will often pay 5-10+ times more for the insurance premium. Statistics do NOT back up the rip off of young males by insurance companies.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

I think some company's just don't want young male drivers and will give quotes like this to discourage that demographic from taking policies with them. Shop around and you should do a lot better.

I would look for quotes on other types of car. It appears now that when insurers hear starlet they get worried. There are 2 reasons for this.

1/ Many have turbos fitted on the quiet
2/ Boy racers have taken a shine to the older boxy starlet.

So when they hear starlet, they consider there is a large risk of it being a boyracer

:D you would only have to look at it to see it wasnt a boy racer car,the colour alone :D its a basic Starlet wind down windows etc belonged to an elderly man who had it garaged for a year, only 42,000mls.I bought it as I was told it is reliable and easy to drive .I have drove it and I think its a brilliant car.My Son aint into Turbo cars etc he just wanted something suitable to get him to college maybe I should have bought him a go-Kart then I wouldnt have to pay exorbitant money on car insurance:D

quick question !! Would it be possible to get one off them gadgets fitted to car? The kind that stops you going over a certain mph? Would the insurance companies accept it and reduce the premium?
    Thanks for all replies
    Appreciated;)

The insurers are not going to come out and look at the car and interview your son prior to giving a quote though so they will base it on past experience. Starlet rings alarm bells for them.
Try a 00 yaris for fun - See if it works out cheaper.

Agreed with mickdw. Certain cars do seem to attract higher premium, in particular for younger males I reckon, but I imagine it depends a lot on the particular insurance company too...I'm no expert but know that cover for certain cars are loaded. Your probably thinking hey its only a run of the mill Toyota Starlet...but thats not necessairly the way insurance companies look at it. Lots were imported in from Japan in recent years and would not necessairly be registered as model which they actually are and turbo engines may be retrofitted etc.

I'm sometimes a wee bit bemused that people place so much emphasis on the value of the car relative to the insurance quote. It might be somewhat astounding looking at the two figures in front of you but they bear no real relevance to each other all the same. Also if he changes to TPF&T and tell the chap once, twice, even ten times to be careful on the road....Bit of a moot point maybe...I'm sure he knows this already or should at least!

Here's an interesting fact for you... whenever an unmodded boxy starlet gets pranged the insurance companies are just listing it as a write off irrespective of damage... trying to get em all off the road(!)

In all fairness they are pretty worthless at this stage if they are just basic starlets. Then if they have had cash spent on them turning them into boyracer cars, it is best to have them off the road so thats a pretty good plan to be honest and of course the insurers wont have to pay out for any of the expensive undeclared mods, of which there may be many.

In my first year I paid 2700 to Axa for a '96 Astra 1.4 in my own name and fully comp. As said ring around for quotes, but you'll still see a high figure.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

Mine ranged from €2,700 with Quinn to €3,800 with AIB.

Insurance would be cheaper on a less 'at risk' car. Fiesta or Yaris spring to mind.

They wont look at the car. Insurance companies have certain cars that just set off alarm bells and when they hear them they starting getting stupid with their quoting. The Starlet is one of these cars.

That said youll definately do better than €7000. Try ARB Insurance; they are good for quoting for high risk categories (which a 17yo in a Starlet is just about at the top of!!!). The only way to get the best quote is to get out the phone book and ring every insurance company and broker listed in it. Speak to them all; dont use the online quoting systems.

    i've never being insured before

i passed my test when i was 17 and am 18 now... license 1 year and 1 month

i was quoted the other day on a 03 1.4 honda civic (actually wasn't considering one at all because of the whole boy racer thing but the insurance is good im afraid.) 5 door hatchback for €1700 fully comp.

thats on my own with no one else to insure with on my first car on my first insurance policy.

When I first got insurance I also had health insurance and I found the health insurance cost a lot less than the difference between TPFT and Comprehensive. I was more concerned for me than the car if 'touch wood' anything were ever to happen. I felt my health insurance gave me better cover for personal injury than a comp policy.

I also found a while back that the insurance quotes can go up when the value of the car goes below a certain level as they then deem it to be less reliable etc.

I would try someone like nononsense.ie and put in a high excess.

Best of luck getting a more realistic quote.

im currently with britton insurance, I am 19 and have a learners permit and my own tpft policy with britton and its costing me only 1500e

I'm 19 old male. I'm paying €980 for fully comp, my own name on a jeep I recently purchased.

    1996 Range Rover.

I've 1 year full driving with licence, and 1 year driving with learner permit.

    it's with Munster Group.

I actually find it funny that they even bothered to return a quote so high. Surely they know that no one in their right mind would pay that much for one years private car insurance. There are still companies who won't quote me and I'm 26 now.

I would expect not being a huge crash risk would help. If insurance company's were truly screwing young males over there is nothing to stop another company coming in at a far cheaper rate. But they don't. Because the price is justified by a limited number who were allowed to get a car because we keep placing safety labels on everything.

Where did you get that quote from? Have you been ringing around to brokers/insurance companies? Forget online quotes, they're terrible for under 25s/inexperienced drivers.

Quinn direct dunno whats up with them.. :/ Just found out, can get insured in my mothers yaris with a provisional for a year for 600 with some policy my dad is in so that will come in handy!
