    I went to the doctor the other day for a sinus infection and she gave me a telling off about my weight, i'm 21.5 stone and only 6ft tall so I suppose shes right, no theres no suppose about it, she is right, my biggest problem is that I drink too much beer and binge eat alot on crap, she suggested I join weight watchers, is this recommended here?also if I change my diet , do I have to go cold turkey or can I indulge from time to time?

    hi showmetheway - to get straight to your question you first need to understand your own level of willpower. If its a case of you can have one or two biscuits/crisps/randomjunkfood and stop then, sure you can indulge. If on the other hand you're one of us that doesn't have that level of self control, then I'm afraid not. (taking into consideration the 21.5 stone aspect, I'm going to assume the latter).

    Now it comes down to simple maths - if you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you intake. With this in mind, I would suggest finding a calorie calculator online and figuring out what your recommended daily calorie intake is... From there you can start to plan out your daily meal plan.

    Apart from all of the above, the number 1 factor in losing weight is motivation. If you don't have it, you won't lose it (the weight that is) so if you're posting here because you feel bad after the doctor visit and not because you actually want to change, then this will be a short lived thing (trust me, i've been there). Anyway, wish you the best of luck

    In my opinion, I wouldn't recommend WW as I see it as a fad diet which does not promote healthy eating. It teaches you that fat should be limited in your diet (any food with a medium to high level of fat in it is given a high point value, such as healthy foods like avocados, nuts, salmon, extra virgin olive oil etc). You need fat in your diet. Fat has many health benefits, such as it helps to carry essential nutrients throughout your body (see below);

    • Brain – Fats compose 60% of the brain and are essential to brain function, including learning abilities, memory retention and moods. Fats are especially important for pregnant women, since they are integral to fetal brain development.
    • Cells – Fatty acids help your cells stay movable and flexible, as well as being responsible for building cell membranes.
    • Heart – 60% of our heart’s energy comes from burning fats. Specific fats are also used to help keep the heart beating in a regular rhythm.
    • Nerves – Fats compose the material that insulates and protects the nerves, isolating electrical impulses and speeding their transmission.
    • Lungs – Lung surfactant, which requires a high concentration of saturated fats, enables the lungs to work and keeps them from collapsing.
    • Eyes – Fats are essential to eye function.
    • Digestion – Fats in a meal slow down the digestion process so the body has more time to absorb nutrients. Fats help provide a constant level of energy and also keep the body satiated for longer periods of time. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) can only be absorbed if fat is present.
    • Organs – Fats cushion and protect your internal organs.
    • Immune System –Some fats ease inflammation, helping your metabolism and immune system stay healthy and functioning.
    I would recommend that you read the stickies on this forum and the Nutrition & Diet forum, they will give you a good base of education. After that post up a sample of your daily diet on the N & D forum and the forumites there will give you some more advice.

    check out the low carbers on the nutrition forum here as it might be an alternative to the low fat approach which is very difficult to keep to imo. Either way you will need a month or 2 with "no crap" or beer. Most diets allow for some relaxation as time goes on, once your body has had a chance to adapt youll get a feel for what you can tolerate. If a beer always turns in 6 or 7 and a crappy takeaway then you'll have to choose :p
    Given that you have at least 5 or 6 stone to lose it might be worth getting some professional nutrition advice.

    Juan, are you hoping that regularly changing your username will increase the chances of getting the answers that you want to hear ? Because you have ignored pretty much everything so far :eek:

    You've actually increased your weight significantly since you last posted your 'perfect' beradi inspired diets as timetogetfit. I think you're waiting for a gastric by pass at this stage ?
