I am currently trying to decide on if I should invest in a home gym system or Investing in a years Gym membership.

The pros of going ot the gym is the fact that I will have other people to motivate me, gym trainers around me to keep me motivated and moving and everything else that can come with a gym (Mmm, eyrcandy ;P)

What I am wondering is does anyone have any experiance with both elements, having some home equipment and also been to a gym, what were your own version of how it went, were you able to keep it up with either of them and where did you go/get the equipment (and if anyone has any spare let me know wink.gif)

A years gym membership is still gona be way cheaper than the price of a powercage and oly bar w/weight. price them yourself. A decent local gym is charging me €245/year at the mo.

The gym I have been looking at is quoting just over 500 for a year (Crunch Fitness in Dun Laoghaire) which is expensive but if anyone has been there it is top notch.

I am looking at the Irish lifting site but I am mainly looking to lose weight and just matain muscle as I have a lot to lose.

Unless you're very self motivated and have the knowledge to plan 6 months worth of programmes and progressions for yourself, stick with the gym.
In my experience, most people won't wok out at home.

Note to all who work out at home, I said MOST people

I have a home gym setup, squat rack,bench,140kg,dumbells etc and dont use it anymore, unless im sick or something, i much prefer working out in a gym, thats just my opinion though.

I started in the same place to you. Very unfit and overweight.

I opted to go it at home. I bought an exercise bike for about 120 at Argos which did the trick and a set of dumbells. If you are new to exercise and /or weights then dumbells will serve you very well for as long as you need. You can get a fairly good set for no more than 50 these days (again argos was my port of call. Note the metal ones are much smaller and easier to manage long term.

However, there comes a point where a bike and dumbells dont provide the gains anymore and so a gym was the next move for me. If your thinking about spending loads of money on a home gym then I would say just join a gym.

I'm not sure how much motivation you will get from people in the gym or the staff though?
