Need Urgent Advice, a Decade of being Dangerously Unfit

Before I start this thread I would like to catergorically state that I am not looking for medical advice merely opinions and whether what I am going through is normal for those who struggled with fitness.

So basically I remember my days playing underage soccer where from 8 to 12 I had incredible fitness, literally used to run the pitch day in day out. Quite normal you'd say but then somewhere between 12-13 I began to get seriously unfit. I should add that I was still just as active playing sports and generally trained in football and rugby 3-4 times a week. By 15 I was seriously unfit but still playing sport. I used to find it odd in rugby how I trained as much as the others yet props completely overweight were nowhere near as tired as I was. In fact, after every game I used to get sick and would generally not be able to play past 10 minutes or so.
I was so down heartened because I did all the training, the same as everyone else yet my fitness was still worse than people who didnt even play sport (in P.E lads who smoked, never did any sports and what not were still lasting longer than me!)

Throughout all those years I was very active in sport and went to the gym regularly. Now I'm doing MMA and quess what, whilst everyone is getting fitter and fitter I am still getting sick after every training and not improving at all.

In the summer I was running 4km 3 times a week (very slow pace due to my fitness) and still no improvement in my fitness and I was completely out of breath whenever I played soccer with my friends in the park.

Its not overtraining either because I've tried to cut back on everything and train cardio and still nothing and even when I was playing rugby I was only training rugby and as much as everyone else was and still it was like I had never trained in my life. I feel like my lungs are like a 60 year old smokers!

I went to a doctor about this and he just completely brushed it off saying I probably wasn't sleeping right and I should see a sleep therapist!

Now, I know its not my genetics because I used to be extremely fit and I just dont know what happened in the space of 2 years where I just became so incredibly unfit. It has me completely down because I train so hard and yet no results.. I'm looking for some help here. Did anyone suffer anything similar and if so what helped? Not looking for medical advice but was anyone in a similar position and it turned out they had asthma/lung disorder etc. (as if so maybe I'll get a second opinion)

    PLEASE HELP

    Hi Username37

Sorry but even though you are not asking for medical advice, in my totally unqualified opinion that is exactly what you require.

Being as active in sports as you describe and not seeing fitness gains seems strange to me.

In my opinion the first doctor you went to was useless. I would seriously recommend that you go and visit another doctor (preferably a sports related doctor) and get a second opinion. Insist that they do a full blood workup.

There used to be a reasonably good sports doctor who worked in O'Neills Sports clinic, who worked out of a place in Dorset St and UCD. You could look them up as see if the doctor is still there.

If any of the other forum posters know of a good sports doctor maybe they would be kind enough to PM the details on to Username37.

I truly hope you get in contact with a good Doctor soon and that this time they take the time to give you a thorough check-up.

    Best Regards,

    M
