Emma Thompson has signed on to play an agent in 'Men In Black III'.
The British actress will star in the blockbuster sequel alongside returning stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Thompson will play Agent Oh - who, according to the film's press release, will play an "MIB agent from the '60s monitoring a prison break".
The film will focus on Smith's Agent travelling through time to save the world again. He ends up meeting a young Tommy Lee Jones in the film, played by 'No Country for Old Men's Josh Brolin.
One of New Zealand's most famous exports since Peter Jackson, Jermain Clement (best known for comedy act Flight of the Concords), will play the film's villain.
Barry Sonnenfeld will direct once more - his first time behind the camera since 2006's 'Runaway Vacation'.
'Men in Black III' will be released in 2012.

And part two was a spectacular disappointment.

The first was great fun, wouldn't have been too concerned if they left it at that!

Men in black is one of those movies that suffers cos it so short, J's training and induction takes up over an hour of the movie until the main plot kicks in, then its over 20 mins later, still good fun though, havent seen it in ages actually.

Men In Black III will be one to dodge. I bet they put it in 3D just to p1ss me off.

oh, what's the point in these movies? So boring, a one watch forgetful little thing. In 20 years time people will still be taking about The Godfather and so on. No one has any artistic values no more.

Some good cast additions to MiB3..

.. but I watched the second movie again recently, and it's terrible!

Whoever thought Lara Flynn Boyle and Johnny Knoxville would make entertaining villians!

Yep, there's another one coming out. Smith and Jones are back. Also coming in is Josh Brolin, playing a younger version of K, Emma Thompson, Alice Eve and Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Conchords fame) playing the villain of the piece. Also Nicole Scherzinger is in there for some reason

Smith passed on Django Unchained so he could do this crap.

does the MIB franchise hold a record for time between sequels or something? 5 years between 1 and 2 and 10 years between 2 and 3.

The trailer doesnt give a great idea of the synopsis.
Jay wakes up and is told something happened kay so he travels 40 years into the past? Sounds like it is borrowing from BTTF. Which isnt exactly a bad thing, but i really hope its not, i would like to think that it felt original and not comparing it to bttf.

    I'll probably go see it.

Nice to hear that MiB music again.

i was just thinking that myself !

    :)

at first i thought they dubbed him or did that CGI thing where they make actors look younger ala xmen last stand.

im not a huge fan of these films but i liked the first so will give it a chance. nice to see not much given away in the trailer.

With Brolin and the time travel storyline, I assume Jones isn't going to be in this much. Probably 20-25 minutes at most. Given his reputation for being difficult, I'm guessing that was a deliberate choice.

This looks like pay cheque collecting exercise for all involved. Which is too bad because I really liked the first MIB.

Oh and I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of MIB II. I definitely saw it, but however good or bad it was, it made zero impression on me.

Most i can remember of it was jay going in search for kay and a big toilet type "flusher" thing.
Anything other than that and i have no idea either.

My guess for this movie is alternative universes. Like the idea of string theory, Jay is in a different universe where kay has been killed in the 60s.
    Something like that.

Barry Sonnenfeld has stated that he is the only director who might release a directors cut shorter than the original theatrical version.

He's far from the only one! I have it in my head that one of the bigger Ridley Scott films has a shorter cut, but I could be wrong. There's a few examples on wiki.

TBH, revisiting a film to tighten pacing or cut out stuff that may have been added for studio reasons is every bit as valid as adding extra stuff (indeed, many director's cuts seem bloated - Donnie Darko, for example).

Yea i agree. had no intentions of seeing this but that Josh Brolin impression of Tommy Jones may just swing it for me. Had no time for MIBII but this has a whopper cast so hope it lives up to the hype

Yeah, the director's cut of Alien is shorter.

Actually doesn't look too bad, and although 10 years has passed it doesn't look it tbh, you'd be forgiven for think this was filmed as soon as number 2 wrapped up, Smith and Jones haven't aged at all since.

No noticeably good use of 3D. Not worth it. Movie itself was pretty meh, like "Why, just why". There were some good elements like an alien that can see through time, but it gets beyond ridiculous with those stupid troncycle type things and without spoiling too much I just lost my sense of enjoyment on this one. Best moment happens between J and 2 police officers, and sadly the rest of the movie is pretty dull even if there is a good closing scene. Easy to see why it took them 10 years, because theres really not much you can do with the concept thats really worthy of the big screen. It was basically an episode of the old cartoon stretched out to 90 minutes. Brolin does a good job of being K though, I'll hand him that. The movie's weakness was primarily the seemingly pointless plot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,257 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

Brolin does a great Tommy Lee Jones. Got it nailed.

The movie is not as fun as pt1, but better than pt2.
Still very average. Special effects were poor at times. Movie is a little more heart felt than the others, but over all its better than I expected and my hopes for it were very very low.

saw this this morning. came out and let out just a big "meh". sums it up really. Nothing special, nothing memorable really, but a decent film none the less. Probably worth waiting for the dvd release. At least I only paid 6 bucks to see it.

saw it earlier, its ok, not great not bad. its does have a suprisingly emotion ending though which I wasnt expecting. not enough laughs though.

Saw it today (in glorious 2D!). It's not bad. Not great either. Although the ending is very well done. I wasn't expecting the film to have anything like that in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

Saw this last weekend. I was utterly bored for most of the movie! The villain was dull and the script was weak. All of the jokes kinda fell flat. I normally like Will Smith, but he was wasted in MiB3.

Two good aspects though: Josh Brolin's Tommy Lee Jones impression was spot on and the ending was clever and unexpected (maybe because the rest of the film was so lacklustre!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,600 ✭✭✭✭CMpunked

    Seen it tonight. 6/10.

The jokes fell flat and the best ones (visuals) were nearly missed. Seems to have lost a lot of the charm of the first two by having too many wooden human characters and not enough memorable aliens.

Would have liked to see J and K opening the movie rather than a 10(?) minutes opener with the villan and yer wan from the pussycat dolls that could have been twice as short but done the job.

    Also seen the ending coming a mile off, but still thought it was pretty heartfelt and emotional, i could have been a blubbering wreck had it not been given away earlier;
2 Movies and J doesnt mention his upbringing or the watch? Fair enough its a plot point, but still.
When the son of that guy (the dude in the electrical shop) said "You were there!" i cringed. Why did he have to give that much away with that line? Why not "You must know K longer than you think" or something like that.
But the kicker was when the general guy felt the need to tell us that his "Especially his first born son would be watching" too. Why, just, why?

But with its negatives, it had a few positives too:
When it introduced the time rift, i wondered how they would handle it as it is a concept used that can be done brilliantly or done terribly. But the use of
griffin(?) The alien who processed and knew every reaction of every action at that moment
was a really useful and was a very clever way of tidying up what could have been quite a mess.

Saw it in 3D tonight. Man, I loved it. Silly stupid bits but I'd watch it again easily. The music was excellent. It's a fun stupid film, type of thing you'd watch easily on a night in on the sofa with the weather howling outside.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭Scioch

Wasnt the worst movie ever, could have been a lot better storywise though, it was poor overall. Thought the ending was bad ,
and the alien dude who knew everything that happened and the grid thing that saves the planet from the alien army was pants. Here's a thing, stick it on a rocket and the earth is saved.

Emma Thompson was pretty much wasted in this movie, I feel. In fact, her character seemed to be just completely pointless.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Far superior to the second movie, was a decent revival & Josh Brolin as a young K was really really good - a better Tommy Lee than Tommy Lee at times!

If people were expecting an intellectual film, I can see why they'd be disappointed...but it's MIB for god sake, just enjoy it for what it is...good clean innocent fun.

Was I the only one that found the scene with the timejump, where people were essentially committing suicide by also leaping, in poor taste? I laughed at first and then actually thought about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I thought it was really decent. Not something you'd be enthusiastically urging others to see, but it was well worth the ticket price, which is unfortunately not something you can say about a lot of movies. I preferred it over MIB 2.

I didnt initially, but now that you mention it..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I thought the whole Wall Street jumper was fairly passable tongue in cheek...you have to remember that the whole notion of countless people plunging to their deaths in the aftermath of the market crash is actually a widely propagated myth - don't get me wrong, plenty of people committed suicide over it, but just not by jumping off buildings as described in popular folklore. And I think that's important in establishing whether or not it's 'okay' as featured in MIB3.

I wouldnt be crying foul over a joke about suicide if it was actually funny, but it was out of place in a movie like that and just used for a cheap laugh.

Also thought Emma Thompson was wasted in the movie.

And I wasnt expecting anything intellectual but there's a cleverness to the first one that they havent been able to replicate since. Its an ok Sci Fi comedy but for the money they had and the talent in it they could have done a hell of a lot better.

Be incredibly hard to screw it up completely considering the talent and the money at their disposal though.

I dont think "its not shít" is what movie makers aim for. Could and should have been better I think.

Lol, you'd be surprised at how easily Hollywood can screw things up.

Yeah it's not sh1t isn't what they were after, but as a viewer, I'm relieved as this could have been a whole lot worse. It improves heavily over the 2nd film, & for a risky third venture, it does the job well enough
