I recently sent a message to someone I used to be friends with and 2 minutes after sending the message I got a friend request but never got a reply to the message. This may sound odd but is it possible to set up an automatic friend request on getting a message?

Maybe you can't send that person a message unless you are friends with them, and so Facebook sent you (and them?) the request?

What used to be the case, is that if you messaged a non-friend, they automatically could view your profile (subject to security settings) for two weeks I think. Sounds like the person simply didn't reply to your message and sent you a friend request. I'm in message contact quite a bit with non-friends and there certanly isn't an issue with having to be friends with someone before you can message them.
